Good. Now, let’s ditch Siri and integrate chat Gpt into Apple devices.
BUT, why did they spend almost 10 years to develop a car? In China new car manufacturers are emerging every month. EV manufacturing is like mobiles now. Just create a shell, buy parts from the market, create a good software and assemble the whole thing. That’s why there are so many Chinese cars. Before EV boom, Chinese cars weren’t available in the western countries. Now they are everywhere.

Can I say it?

“Can’t innovate my a$$!!!!!!” - phil

But seriously very sad news. Competition is always good.

I hope all those laid off folks find a new home soon.

The iPhone of EVs already exists: Tesla, and Tim Cook realized that. Whenever people say they want an EV, they actually mean a Tesla. This is why Ford, GM, Mercedes have all failed miserably in comparison. The only competition is with Chinese EV companies and that's only for their domestic market.
I have a Toyota EV, and it’s great. I chose it over a Tesla.

and nobody is convinced that this was to get a deeper insight into how to make Carplay more extensible and diverse from getting a vehicle manufacturer perspective?
Interesting perspective.. maybe even vehicle diags too.

I doubt Apple was ever planning to release their own Apple car. Rather, I expect they were working on delivering a smart car brain module, whereby existing manufacturers could partner with Apple to equip their cars with Apple's module. The partnership likely would have required car manufacturers to fit their cars with specific sensors, cameras, and displays etc that meet Apple's requirements for integrating into the brain module for delivering autonomous driving, CarPlay functionality, and much more.

Good news!! Apple has accumulated a major delay in development of the Titan project... Meantime the automotive market has became more challenging and competitive than 10 years ago, putting Apple in a marginal role.
And extremely expensive dream that comes to an inglorious end!!

A decade on a non-car and 10 years on a high-end Quest-like VR headset.

Damn, I think Tim has jumped the shark.

He’s brought wealth to shareholders and made Apple into one of the most valuable companies in the world.

But I’d love to see a new CEO lead. A visionary that know what they want and can say no to a project.

Maybe they finally did the rest of the math and realized that downstream costs associated with automobile production make it not worth the risk. Better to lose .1% of your budget finding that out early than the rest of it later. Cars R Coffins.

Why do people think Apple would have been better at the car smarts than building a physical car itself? Throughout Apple’s history they’ve always been better at hardware than software. There is little evidence they had good enough software to power an autonomous vehicle.

It’s not money lost though. They likely have an advanced UI they will license to other manufacturers and potentially AI feature set to use on other products. Basically CarPlay Pro.

The car UI will be a huge market once cars truly become autonomous on a mass scale.

I have a direct line to the statistics, my father is a firefighter. His average car fire takes a few hours at most, and because of the infrastructure of the gas car most people will survive the fire.
His most recent Tesla fire took all night. The person involved in the incident could not be rescued from inside the car because they couldn’t open the car, and the stupid thing reignited days later.
EVs are a death trap, the technology is not at all ready.
that's not statistic, take a look here:

I was hoping my first EV would be an Apple Car, but oh well, I would be happy with an EV from a company that knows how to make good cars, and let Apple design the CarPlay and instrument cluster. For now, I just plug in my phone, stick it on a car vent mount of my 2012 car, and dream of the future. By the way, just because Bloomberg says it, has Apple actually made some sort of statement on it? I guess they don't need to because it is vaporware? Their stock went up today, LOL

still not convinced if they really ever worked on a car, but just MY opinion. if this was indeed true, maybe in a recent meeting Tim approved Go, while everyone was cheering some dude stood up and asked where he should send the sketches now for assembly, it got quiet suddenly. - i mean, carmakers have factories and stuff, unlike companies ordering containers full of small device assembly by some asia vendors. let’s continue: how to sell, where to sell, service and maintenance? trust? price? would anyone buy a (first gen) ipod maker car that would for sure carry at least a six digit price tag? just my cents, whatever, obviously this will not happen, and to me it’s fine.

I think you need to do some research...

The particulate matter coming from breaks, tyres and other moving parts vastly outnumbers the particles coming from the simple burning of gasoline.
Okay, I did some research. Here's one source: https://www.theguardian.com/environ...e-particle-pollution-than-exhausts-tests-show

It mostly talks about cars in general but mentions the chance of "slightly higher tyre particles from BEVs," but also "BEVs are becoming lighter very fast." I don't see any attempt to compare particle pollution to greenhouse gas emissions, which is the main problem with burning gasoline.

I can't tell if you're saying "we should also address this other pollution problem" (agree) or if you're saying "EVs are a hoax and we should just keep going with the status quo" (disagree).

I remember people were happy at the time because Apple will complete with Tesla. And Macrumors comments section hated Tesla. Which is fair given the low quality fits and finish of Tesla. But that doesn't mean going into cars were a good idea.

Wow, hybrids appear to inherit all the complexity and the potential problems of both types of vehicles, would not want one.
I had a Honda hybrid for 8 years and then a Toyota hybrid for 10 years and they were fine, but when shopping again two years ago it did feel undesirable to have two kinds of engines to maintain, and I made the jump to a full EV.

Counterintuitively, Consumer Reports ranks hybrids as the most reliable cars. I wonder if that says more about the companies that make hybrids than about hybrid technology itself.

Apple has canceled all plans to release an autonomous, electric vehicle, reports Bloomberg. Apple has been working on an Apple Car for more than a decade and invested millions of dollars into development before deciding it was not a viable project.

Apple-car-wheel-icon-feature-yellow.jpg

Apple's Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams today told approximately 2,000 employees working on the Apple Car that the project was canceled, and the information reportedly came as a surprise.

Work on the Apple Car is winding down and many of the people that were working on the car will move to Apple's artificial intelligence division to work on generative AI under AI chief John Giannandrea.

There are a number of hardware engineers and car designers that were on the Apple Car team, and there will be layoffs. Some of the employees may be able to shift to other divisions within the company.

Earlier this year, there were rumors that the Apple Car project had been scaled back, with Apple abandoning plans for a full driverless car with autonomous capabilities. Apple shifted focus to an electric vehicle with fewer self-driving features, and the vehicle would have been on par with Tesla's technology. Apple was aiming to release the car sometime around 2026, but now those plans have been shelved completely.

News of the Apple Car first surfaced in 2014, and since then, the project has been rife with problems. The focus of the work has changed and evolved multiple times, and Apple has had several leadership changes due to internal strife. Apple Watch chief Kevin Lynch took over the project in 2021, and he worked to scale down the project while still putting out a viable car.

According to Bloomberg, senior Apple executives made the decision to wind down the Apple Car project in recent weeks.

Why is no one thinking of the obvious - maybe Apple will purchase one of the struggling EV makers?

Lucid would be a perfect fit. Lucid’s technology with Apple’s software and manufacturing/marketing expertise would help Lucid drop the cost of their cars and put the hurt on Tesla.
