Definitely the case for anything I've ordered next day. You can pay like $20-$30 more for early morning delivery on top of that too for a specific time.
Is there a way to tell at this point or do I have to wait for shipping status to tell? Sorry for all the questions. I may have to call and see if I can get it for in store pick up. When I did the head start that’s what it said but when I completed the order it processed it as ship to home which I didn’t request due to late delivery time and vacation flight next morning

If you can’t get it switched, you can do UPS MyChoice and have them deliver it to a UPS location for pickup. Generally, as long as you do it in advance of about 24 hours (aka not whe it gets scanned onto the delivery truck) they will have it available at that UPS location the morning that delivery is promised on - this way you can pick it up at your convenience and not worry about the delivery time.

Or worst case, you can schedule delivery for another location or another day.

Still no change. Status is "Preparing for Shipment". I checked and no device shown on support profile, and nothing shows up on UPS or FedEx. I am assuming no more movement until tomorrow at this point. Unless something pops late tonight.

There is an app called "Deliveries" for those who want an easier way to track. I just pulled up mine, and it automatically found my scheduled delivery from Apple. It doesn't say which carrier though yet, just that it's Prepared to ship w/delivery on 9/22.

Edit... my carrier for iPhone is typically FedEx.

The UPS "MyChoice" is a great option, but you can't ask for early delivery based on my experience. I pick a depot where I want to pick up and they tend to drop off there at end of their run.

So you'll actually get it later than if you waited around, but at least you know it's safe.

It’s pribably a YMMV situation. Usually when I do it they process it the night before as a UPS Access Point pickup, then end up dropping it off to them first thing in the morning when they go to pick up the previous nights late drop offs. I guess it depends on location? But worth a shot none the less and like you said at least it isn’t sitting on your doorstep!

On he night before delivery, I always have mine held for pickup at my local UPS Cutomer Center, which is one of their massive hubs, and they have it ready for me to pick up that morning. I’m there when they open, and I have my new device in hand within 30 minutes. I’ve never seen a long line of people waiting, with the most being around 10.

This not totally accurate. Every year, I use UPS MyChoice to have my iPhone held at the local delivery depot. it is waiting for me at 8:00 AM to pickup.

You can get a free month of UPS My Choice Premium with promo code C56XXHC74.

What benefits does premium offer over free?

How do I tell if it’s ups or fedex in the preparing to ship stage?

You can pick a 2-hour confirmed delivery window within the original 4 hour estimate. This is $5 per package with the free version and $0 per package with premium. I have 3 iPhones and a Watch coming Friday so I can pick a delivery window without spending $20.

Oh ok. Is it FedEx? I’m in Seattle. Just curious. I assume if next day it’s early delivery not late in the day.
Most likely Fedex for me. Nothing shows up on UPS for me so I'm going to guess that mine will be fedex. Always been fedex for me when I order apple stuff.

I ordered something from apple.com few weeks back on Saturday. They marked as shipped on Saturday afternoon. Have the tracking number but no update on fedex tracking until Monday morning. So I'm sure that if it's via fedex we won't see. Any anything till Monday morning.

Fedex is usually early morning if you request hold for pick up.

Still not understanding. Don’t you need a tracking number first before you can tell which company is delivering? Mine only says preparing for shipment by next day delivery

You just have to keep checking FedEx and UPS directly by searching by reference # or you get MyChoice and FedEx’s delivery Manager. Both are free.

In the past, the majority of “from China” iPhone orders have been UPS.

When do store pick ups get ready to ship?

Apple Store typically will likely receive shipment the day before but they can't release them until launch day. So for those who choose the in-store pick up option, they will likely change status after midnight or early morning launch day to "Ready for Pick Up"

Reference #? The Apple site hasn’t shipped it yet. It’s still preparing for shipment. The only # is the order number

For me when it's at "Preparing to Ship" Stage it can take few hours, but the shipment label is created and I can simply go to Fedex.com and track by reference and when I type in my phone number and I already get the tracking info for it. But on weekends, even if you get the tracking number when Apple marks it shipped, it shows up as unavailable on Fedex because the shipment label has not yet been created and the warehouse aren't open on weekends. For Fedex we'll likely see them tomorrow.

Ok. So reference # is phone#. Thanks. I assume then you must have a fedex account that has your phone linked to your delivery address

Often times same day - last year, my phone was drop shipped (meaning that it was due to arrive the morning of launch). Well one of the shipments did at 6am, as planned. The one with my phone? Didn’t show up until 10am. The UPS guy was so rushed he came in through the front door which is a huge no-no for Apple and most retailers, since it’s a security issue.

In any event I got my phone, but just shows how to the last minute it can be!

There’s an option on FedEx and ups to search by reference number: usually, the reference number is the phone number associated with your Apple account. Often, people have been able to find their shipment with their reference number (phone number) prior to receiving a tracking number, but it’s hit or miss.
