No, you don’t if you want to setup the free account like UPS MyChoice (which is better because you get much more detail on your packages), Sears for FedEx Delivery Manager. Sign up and any packages that come via FedEx or SmartPost in your name and to your address you will see.
Not working. There’s only a search field for tracking number. I entered my phone number in it and said invalid tracking number.
What did you use to see it? Please explain.

I don't have fedex account and I can still track my package while it's being prepared for shipment using my phone number and I can still request hold for pick up without an account. But I do have UPS My Choice as well. Sadly apple always ships via Fedex for me.

For Fedex, I have known that they don't create labels on the weekends so you won't find anything. I've ordered stuff from Apple on weekends and when they marked it shipped, and I track the package, nothing shows up, but come Monday morning they'll likekly update so you may try tomorrow for Fedex.

There is a tropical storm that is in the Shanghai area that missed and hit Japan - could be worse, it could have damaged the factory or delayed/grounded planes! We still have a week to go. Int'l shipments from Shanghai/Hong Kong take a max of 3 days to get delivered to your door stateside with the method Apple uses with UPS. My delivery date, if Apple didn't work with UPS to delay shipments, would have been Tuesday under normal conditions.

You go to UPS or FedEx, then track > Track by Reference #. Enter your phone number, or your web order number (the one that starts with W) MINUS the last two digits. If nothing shows up, it’s likely not had a label created yet and isn’t actually shipped.
Time when it was ordered has nothing to do with being able to find the tracking. I'm sure there are others out there who ordered later than you already got the tracking info by searching via ref. It all depends on what model you chose and color and size.
Not sure if you are using your phone to check or the one on desktop but I'm checking from my MacBook Pro.
I have one for pick up in store and still says "Order in Progress" and my paypal credit did get charged. We won't be seeing the change till launch day. So it will still say "Order in Progress" till Friday.
When it's preparing to ship stage you don't actually know. But there is a way to find out by searching on UPS or Fedex via Track by reference. for UPS it's your order number minus the last 2 digit, I believe your phone number works as well. For Fedex you can Track by reference using your phone number.
Just used my MacBook Pro and found track by reference on both sites. I used my phone number on both, nothing. Used the w order# minus last two numbers, nothing on both. I ordered the silver 64 iPhone 8 plus.
Then you'll just have to keep checking. Apple don't typically create shipping labels on weekends (especially for Fedex). That is why nothing comes up on Fedex.
