Problem is that I and many others want the Pro to actually remain focused on Pro functions. Keep the ports, keep the battery life and keep the performance. I would much rather they add an M.2 port internally to allow expansion vs just making it thinner. Making the laptop thinner should be more focused on the Air line, and maybe just a Macbook line if they ever bring back that.
Yeah I'm not saying that I personally want it thinner, rather that the handwriting was on the wall when the iPad Pro M4 came out with its thinner body. It told me Apple's back at it with the thinness thing. Hey maybe it will be just fine, retaining all the ports & battery life & most importantly the performance.

Thats been my point the whole time. Faster versions of the M4 (M5, M6, etc.) will run hotter and be more demanding of a cooling system which would be compromised by a thinner chassis.
But this will be a different chip. Same as M3 is different from M2 and M2 is different from M1.
You think base/Pro/Max chip generations differ only by a clock speed which is completely false.

M1: 5 nm (N5), instruction set ARMv8.5-A
M2: 5 nm (N5P), instruction set ARMv8.6-A
M3: 3 nm (N3), instruction set ARMv8.6-A

It's unreasonable to think that the lower nanometer process will get hotter, that's just not how it works. Quite the opposite, the M4 chip proves so.
The process size isn't the only element of that equation though. Sure it does enable better performance per watt, but you have to consider what Apple chooses to do with that. If we only choose more performance, then it can be just as hot or hotter still. If we only choose efficiency, and keep the performance the same, then yes it would get less power hungry. A smaller process only gives the option to consume less power, it doesn't inherently say that's what we will do with it.

It's already pretty small and way lighter than my windows machine - wish they would stop obsessing over it.

The problem is Apple has turned the MBP into some kind of a status symbol/fashion accessory. People flaunt them like designer handbags and Apple pander to this. The issue being is that they'll drive away actual professional users who need them for design/motion/3d etc because they won't be able to compete with performance whilst trying to make it light enough for underweight anaemic-looking Tik Tok influencer to carry alongside their Birkin bag, Pomeranian and Stanley cup.

This lol. HDMI is not necessary. An extra TB port is way more praftical.

It sucks that the average user is not able to understand that USB-C to HDMI or DP cables have existed for years.
It's not lack of understanding. We know that adapters exist. But adapters are easy to misplace or forget. When I head into a meeting room, the predominant connector is still HDMI. Not having to remember an adapter is one less thing I have to think about. I just sit down and plug the cable that's sitting there into my computer with no hassle or fuss. I'll take an HDMI port over a 4th Thunderbolt any day of the week to just not have to deal with a ****ing adapter.

AirPlay is only in Apple-dominated businesses. The only Apple devices my company (healthcare) has is the iPhone. Everything else is PC, and it's like that in every hospital in my region.

Once Windows has native AirPlay, perhaps. How am I going to AirPlay my Excel sheet from my Dell to a projector?
Huh?! Do the PROJECTORS run Windows? Lol.
I’m pretty sure only the PROJECTOR would have to support AirPlay (some tech from 2004, that for sure has made its way into many/most brands of projectors, by now) for your “all windows” camp to be able to host a presentation from someone that owns a MacBook sans HDMI.
As far as your question of how you’d show a spreadsheet from your Dell, if they had projectors that support AirPlay. Ummm… simple: same way you did before. Lol, when companies started adding AirPlay as an option- they didn’t make it the ONLY option!!
Your question sounds like this to me:
“How the hell am I supposed to use CarPlay in my new car that supports both CarPlay AND Android Auto??”.

You think Max chip generations differ only by a clock speed which is completely false.
The M2 is the same generation of chip as the M1. The M5, M6, and M7 will be the same generation as the M4 and they will all run progressively hotter as their cores get more powerful with the effect being more pronounced on the Max versions.

Technically all they need to do is to make the battery screwed in (2009-2012 MacBooks, modern PC laptops) rather than glued in and make the battery packs available for purchase separately (they currently require a full top case replacement); not much is going to change regarding the weight and materials.
I'm not so sure. I think the EU wants something like what Samsung did with the Galaxy SIII: a easily removable back to access a battery holder, where the user can easily take out and put in a new battery.

Yeah. What I'd really like them to do is bring back the macbook lineup, but properly this time (not like the last macbook). The Air should be more like that last super thin macbook.
The Macbook should be closer to what the Air is today, but maybe with 3 or 4 Thunderbolt ports (at least something on each side).
The Pro should keep what it has and add internal M.2 for Storage expansion and even potentially one USB-A port back( I know most don't want that anymore, but I still have and use USB-A thumb drives because they still work fine and it would be nice to be able to just plug it in.) I'd even love an ethernet jack to come back, but that does increase thickness a lot and I don't need that nearly as often anyhow so I can live with an adapter in that case.

Sigh. It's so tiring, isn't it? We can't figure out what to do. We are tapped for ideas. So let's just make this stuff thinner and put better cameras on it. That's enough. People will be happy. Shareholders will rejoice. Rinse and repeat.

One thing I don’t understand. Huawei is able to make their copy of the Apple smartwatch with 10 days battery life. Only half the price of Applewatch. Same if not more functions.

Apple has fully run out of ideas. It’s clear that they are ruining the MacBook again so they can fix it again. Sorry but you’re wrong if you think this is a good decision. We already saw how this went once. Apple is not going to invent new physics that allow them to magically air cool processors with less air. A thinner laptop will have worse thermals. The price we will pay will be reduced processing power relative to what we would have without it.

If you don’t like how heavy the MBP is, just get the Air. Let’s be honest, you weren’t using the processing power - you just think you need the best thing on the market and like to throw money away. That much is obvious, since you’re now begging Apple to make a worse product because you’re too weak to carry around your status symbol.

Here’s an idea, get a bag with thicker straps. Or one with wheels.

The M2 is the same generation of chip as the M1. The M5, M6, and M7 will be the same generation as the M4 and they will all run progressively hotter as their cores get more powerful with the effect being more pronounced on the Max versions.
That is completely false, what are you talking about?!
M2 is NOT the same generation of chip as the M1. All 3 generations run on a different node process - that's just one of the difference.

let's hope they drop the HDMI port on MacBook Pro. HDMI is anything but pro.

if you're ready to concede a thunderbolt 4 port for an useless HDMI one, this shouldn't be a product made for you.

edit: after interacting with a few users, I wonder how you managed to live without HDMI port on your iPhone Pro
Removing ports is a stupid idea. Nobody wants to carry around a bunch of dongles in case the conference room doesn’t have the right cable, or because they need to plug in an SD card. With all the current space on the side of the laptop, there is plenty of space. You’re just suggesting they make it worse for silly aesthetic reasons.

You’re free to buy an Air if you don’t need all the features of the Pro.

Looking forward to the 2027 MacBook Graphene.

"So thin, you can't even be sure we didn't just sell you an empty box!!!"

the useless HDMI port is not the feature I need in my MBP.

the CPU, GPU and HDR screen are. if Apple made an AIR with the Max or Ultra chip and a 16 HDR screen, I'll get one.

Why everyone is obsessed with battery life?? From the numbers you should be able to get around 10h from iPhone 14/15. If you really need more, then you have a serious adiction problem !!

I have been super happy with the move AWAY from making everything as thin as possible. I think pointless and I'd much rather have better battery, features, and overall design.

I was actually happy to see Johnny Ive nudged out, because he ruined several products with the thin obsession.

There's literally NEVER been a situation where I thought, "Gee, I want to take my laptop with me, but it's 0.5mm too thick, so I won't bring it."
This is the issue here.

There is an audience that wants thinner and lighter. There also is an audience that wants more performance and battery life with each iteration.

Who wins? Is there a way where Apple has a way to keep most of the their customers satisfied?

Isn't the M4 using the ARMv9 instruction set?
