Wow, so now if I go buy either a Mac Pro or a Mac Mini (basically a Mac that needs a display).....Apple is telling me that I need to either:

a) Buy a 30" Cinema Display (as it's the only model with a DVI connection)
b) Buy someone else's display

Interesting Apple.

-Kevin

Good to point that out

Which only means that

a) Apple must update the display connectors on the Mac Mini/Pro next month or
b) Release the updated 20 inch with both a DVI and DP connector (unlikely)

This couldn't be any clearer: either the Mac Mini gets updated next month, or it will be EOL'd

Nothing gave me that impression, although I know lots of fellow designers who were tricked into that view from apples marketing shpeel on their site, hence the endless rows of craptastic cinema displays sitting in studios here in London.

I got asked to recommend displays for a company refresh cycle. IT management agreed with me but then had to go against my advice and bought Apple 23" ACDs due to office politics - the designers just saw a shiny Apple logo and enjoyed the jealousy they got from the other ignorant staff.

Good job they bought them I suppose as Apple now have nothing to offer them anymore. 30" ACDs are out of the question (hello, global economic meltdown is calling) and DVI-to-Mini-DisplayPort doesn't exist so that torpedoes the 24" ACD too (irrespective of the GlossGlass horror that had designers complaining when we tried out new iMacs on them).

What the heck are Apple thinking with their display strategy? I can only surmise that they don't sell many ACDs as it is so chopping off a huge chunk of potential market doesn't matter that much.

"Apple Displays - it's just a hobby for us" :p

30" iMac along with 30" LED monitor update?

Hmm. So, I bet Apple will introduce an LED 30" soon.

Question is, will it coincide with updates to the iMac line?

A 24" base model iMac with the Nvidia chipset ala the 17" MacBook Pro AND a 30" iMac model with Quad Core? The larger size of the 30" would help with the heat issues of the quad chips.

Well with all the Mac Pro's and DVI connections out there, I would hope that Apple has something up there sleeve for switching over to this mini stuff.
One thing for sure in my opinion, that LED 24", I'd NEVER pay that much for that monitor. The economy is going down and fast and Obama's help is not going to turn things around over night, Apple better wake the F up and realize your warehouse's are going to be full unless you come down to reality and listen to the people, not throwing in the towel, just listen more to the USER, the ones with money and the onese with millions .

Just got the new Dell 5 minutes ago and will be checking it out tonight when I get off of work, 2209WA, have a second one coming tomorrow but not sure of keeping that.

Well, IMO Apple has lost the plot and if anything, started to create new Apple haters.

Its not so much that I’m now an Apple hater; but if the company I admired so much (and spent so much money with and used to beat PC users down with) cant even be ar***d to give me a current desktop product to buy; or a monitor to add as a dual display when I buy it (a new iMac!) then sorry, their loss!

Engadget showed off the new Shuttle i7 offering today for under $700 ... me thinks its time to switch back to PC - not through want but through sense and necessity! Sure I’ll miss iLife but it wont realistically be worth whatever the difference between the Shuttle and new iMac will be (will it?)

Apple a PC maker … I think not; its only bothered with iPods, iPhones and laptops (and it cant even follow market trends and pricing on the later!)

Bye bye Apple, hello fast and low cost PC (and some great games!!!!)

Really? Really? What's your current machine? What do you use it for? What bits of iLife do you use? What are the current failings of your mac that make you want to upgrade now?

Just interested. I used to buy a new Mac Laptop once a year for tax reasons. Now I don't have that opportunity, so I don't bother. MBP over two years old and going fine. Sure - I'm waiting for a MacPro update to spend lots of money on that, but that's because I'd "like" to have one, and I'd "like" to have more internal storage. But this sure as hell doesn't make me want to consider a pc again. It's just a backwards heap of junk.

I've now given up on the Mac Pro since it seems like it's going to be April if not later before it's updated (and I refuse to spend £3,000 on a computer that's a museum exhibit in comparison 2 months later). I urgently need to replace my desktop though,

Your first statement says that you don't really need a new computer, but your second statement says you do.

If you actually "urgently need" to replace your desktop, then you would do it. Professionals typically don't worry about what's coming - they buy a Mac Pro (or PowerMac), use it until it's not useful any more, and then buy a new one. Why? Because time is money, and buying what's available now will pay for itself, far better than playing the waiting game.

In answer:
1. Mine doesn't, thats why I'm with them
2. bittorrent???
3. Who owns an apple tv?

This is only about protectionist economics and has nothing to do with technical limitations, these are simply convenient excuses.

Great, your provider doesn't throttle. Do you think Apple only has your provider in mind? What about the countless others. Until there are actual net neutrality laws, Apple would be foolish to expect people to have the bandwidth to download 1080p video at this time.

Once again, you have shown that the posters of this forum think they represent the majority of Apple's market. No offense to you, as it's very common on online forums, but the fact remains the majority of Apple's customers wouldn't even know where to find an online Mac forum, let alone register and post to one.

Movies. That's all they don't support. Movies. No one cares. "No one" being Apple, since they have the iTunes movie venue and their opinion is the only thing that matters.

How very Microsoft/Sony of them. Thus the embargo :)

Ok, fair enough. :) It can't be common though. I have a Macbook Pro (got a great refurb deal), but I only spent $150 for an external 20" acer widescreen monitor at 1680x1050. It works perfectly, I can't see why I would spend so much more.

There is no reason for designers to be tied in to apple kit, I've worked on anything and everything from a pentium 166 to a quad core mac pro, photoshop is the same on all of them. ;)

In fact serious design tools like microstation and autocad aren't even available for OSX. I come from a 3D background and also do a lot of graphic design and brand consulting, the vast majority of work done in my professional career has been designed using pc's.

I remember one junior saying to me that they thought it was not possible to "be creative" on anything other than a mac... This was the same person who couldn't use a pencil and paper to communicate a design.

Just my opinion but I think you'd have to be crazy to buy the Apple 20" when you can get a very nice Samsung for half the price....and it's not as if Samsung don't know how to make LCD's.

I'm getting a bit disappointed with Apple of late, their mac product offerings just aren't as good as they should be. People who are loyal and only ever buy macs are faced with some difficult decisions if they need a new computer now.

So yes, Apple may make bigger and better but it doesn't mean we have to buy it all the time. Chances are, the Mac you have right now is more than what you need anyway; it will run Snow Leopard fine when that arrives and it will continue to serve you well as long as you take care of it.

I have a G5 iMac. I can't do HD video on it because that is only supported on Intel. That's because Apple switched architecture and don't support old models. That's not my fault.

I need to replace it. I don't really like the integrated monitor, but I would still consider another iMac. The problem is no blu-ray. And yes I would use it.

So I need a headless mac so I can by an external display with HDMI. Then I can plug a standalone blu-ray player into "input 2".

So, basically, unless I want to spent $3k on a machine I need to wait until Apple releases new hardware. (Unless I want to buy a very outdated mini).

So that's why I'm embargoing Apple. I'm not putting any more money into Apple products until I see what is going to happen. If it takes too long, I'm going to buy a Dell studio mini with blu-ray and a 24" monitor for a lot less than an iMac. And hope Windows 7 "photocopied" enough of "OS X" to be usable.
