I think I might actually return the 2021 12.9 1TB 5G for an Apple certified refurb 2018 1TB LTE (already ordered). Mini-LED's been giving me headaches.

Oh well, saves me $900 and AC+ is a bit cheaper.

Oh, nooooooo! What about the reloading of 100+ tabs? That 16GB RAM didn’t make much a difference.. eh?

It absolutely does and I love having all that RAM. Alas, I like being pain-free much more.

Which is better boils down to personal preference and usage though. I have the M1 MBA and it's not a better value for me for the simple fact that it's been sitting unused in its bag for months while I use the 2017 Pros and Air 3 daily.

I have a M1 MBA as well and have been "forced" to use it after I gave away my iPP recently lol. Debating whether to buy another or not...a laptop is so much better for productivity but an iPad is just more fun and enjoyable to use. My Mac was sitting in my closet too while the iPad got the most use. But I'm enjoying being able to just juggle things more easily right now and even simple things like playing multiple audio sources at once easily.

Anyway...not trying to turn this into Mac vs iPad debate. Both clearly have pros and cons. I prefer iPad I think nowadays because I've finally realized I don't care about pro level apps either. The video and photo editing on iPad is plenty good enough for 90% of use cases...and it's just more enjoyable most of the time.

Just saying if you're the type that wants an iPad but will realistically be using it docked 90% of the time and trying to do "pro" things then really a laptop is probably a more practical purchase, but you just have to know what you plan on doing.

It's not a pittance and yes, $2K is a lot of money. I don't think it's an impossible amount to save up though, if one values it enough particularly if it will be used for at least 3-5 years. Especially so if one doesn't have a lot of obligations.

You have a 2020 Pro 11, 2020 MBA and iPhone 12 mini, so obviously, you can afford $2K. You just prefer to spend it on other things.

Raising kids cost far more than $2K every 3-5 years and yet millions of people do it. :p
You are comparing raising kids to buying an gadget? Interesting perspective!

For 11” iPad Pro 1tb (to get 16gb ram)
WiFi+cellular
Applecare

no case
No keyboard
No pencil

Just because you have lost your mind doesn’t mean I have...seriously who would pay that price?

A lot people would just pay for the whatever the best with Apple logo

I prefer MacOS over iPadOS but it's the only device in my arsenal where the keyboard doesn't come off and gets in the way sometimes like when stacking these three in portrait to take a picture. And, I keep poking at the screen to realize it's also the only device without touch or pen input. Productivity is king followed by consumption so iPadOS isn't even a consideration. One day Apple will stop forcing people to buy two half ass devices and combine it into one.

I own both the 2020 (and have the M1 on the way) iPad Pros, that was after owning the 2018 and the 10.5" before it... I love my iPad Pros, LOVE them... but, I also own a Tab S7 from Samsung, and say what you want, but they've caught up. With the 120hz panels, the low frequency S-Pen input times, the new Snapdragons, etc. etc. etc. the hardware is there now, the iPad has competition, it's just most people don't think about Android as a viable alternative. In some ways it is, and in some ways it isn't, but I do think it's odd how people consider the iPad Pro so much more superior when the Tab S7 is a very serious piece of hardware.

What iPad mainly win is the iPad apps. Andriod tablet apps are just almost non exist or extreme poorly made.

Just pointing out that all things considered $2K isn’t unaffordable. At least not if you’re earning decent wages in the US. There’s a ton of other things people spend money on that cost far more than a $2K iPad. Just a matter of having different priorities and obligations. For me, no kids, so I don’t have a lot of obligations.

How are you going to live without the Geekbench?

Quite easily. I didn’t buy the 2021 for its Geekbench scores. Stable operation due to having more than sufficient RAM is what I’d miss most.

I'm far from being rich but I save for the iPad every paycheck and am willing to sacrifice other luxuries so I can get the exact configuration I want (1TB). I use the iPad primarily for consumption but I do use it a lot and storage is the one area I don't want to compromise on. I'd be very happy with, say, an iPad Air with A14 + 8GB RAM + 1TB for a few hundred dollar less. Alas, that does not exist.

Mind, I have plenty of external SSDs—a couple of T7s but mostly 1-4TB 2.5" SATA SSDs with adapter. However, most are formatted NTFS. The T7s are formatted exFAT but I'm reluctant to use them on the iPad due to corruption issues.

Besides, unless you only use the iPad on a desk, external drives are a major hassle that could get unplugged if you move wrong.

I got the 256 model, but have a home server with tens of TBs of storage so often use that over network. Your configuration needs makes sense now (to me) if a large external rep isn’t always available as you don’t want to be regularly plugging anything into such a portable device.

I can’t see the need for 16GB though, simply because I’ve had IPad ‘pro’ since first model and am pretty sure that Apple and third parties have never yet targeted the niche subset of Ipad pro only configuations for anything but the pencil, not the gpu or ram (although there is a game I forget that starts at the 2018 pro which is unusual). So there isn’t a need for 16 for most of us, but there will be workflow situations where a genuine pro use of the device will be able to process X into Y with more rapidity , and those users will know that is why they want the higher end models.

Its great that the base Ipad finally has more than 4GB, which was too low for the 2018 models (*cough*2020 blip).

I’ve got a 20TB NAS but 5-10Mbps upload speeds means I really only use it when I’m home. Besides, I’ve been to places in the Philippines where the internet is crap (including stuck in a hospital) so I like having media available locally.

With 16GB RAM, I’ve actually been enjoying not having to deal with reloads (and sometimes even outright crashing) when switching between apps and Safari tabs. That increased stability actually really helps make it feel more like a desktop OS to me.

That said, I think I may be stuck using older or entry level models unless Apple goes back to PWM flicker-free displays.

Note, base iPad 8th gen is A12/3GB. Even the Air 4 is just A14/4GB. The Air with A14 + 8GB RAM + 1TB and lower price point is just wishful thinking on my part.

Ah have 50 here, its kinda rare I do that remotely but it happens.

True but the 8GB is also going to page out less so we’d need to see when the difference starts. I imagine more apps are going to stay alive in 16GB, like back on older ios devices where you could find apps you opened over a week ago still in memory.

Yep should have said pro, never had a non pro ipad.

I don’t see the problem really, it’s about the same as a Mac at this point and I get more value out of the iPad Pro than I do a Mac.

As for cost I always thought that I am better served by not focusing on small differences in cost when it comes to products and instead choosing the unit best suited for my needs. So if the units prices are $1k or $2k isn’t that relevant if the unit will be used a lot and the more expensive one is better suited to my needs.

The energy spent thinking about the money is best spent on the income side.

£2k on one electrical item when you’ve got children is rather obscene but agree that children cost far more than that. They say a child costs around £10k a year and I have 2 of them. I think my wife challenges that figure to be honest lol. Unless you use an iPad for productivity and perhaps intend to keep it for a number of years, a £2k iPad is rather pointless for most people I think. Many will spend more than that on multiple devices though.

Absolutely, same here, I don't want kids, so that leaves me much more disposable income than if I had them. Well I spend quite a bit for my apartment but that's the price to pay to live in the center of one of the most expensive cities in the world (I guess those who live in the center of London know what I mean). With the benefit though, that you don't need to own a car when you live and work in the center. And cars, again, tend to cost much more than iPads...
Some people might say car are necessary and iPads aren't, but often it's more a question of comfort... In many situation a car, let alone an expensive one, could be replaced by public transport or other means, but it's more comfortable. I could replace my iPads with pen an paper (including for work), TV sets etc. like I used to do, but I much prefer the versatility, comfort and fun factor of iPads...

I'm sure...Ipad will always be a sidepiece but like most sidepieces, there is always the promise of divorce but it doesnt happen. I dont own a Mac computer of anykind so maybe since they are limited that is why more are trying to replace with ipad as main....I use windows computer so i can do much more with my main, so ipad will always be a side.

If you have a desktop at home that has enough space for backup, what is the purpose of NAS? Just another backup and share media? Snology is pretty expensive with full AI for latest app, at least $400 US dollars.

Centralized, shared storage for multiple devices.

I already tried the Windows desktop as SMB server and the DIY server route before. Nowadays, I just find turn-key solutions like Synology or QNAP far more preferable.
