OP has a point. Smart consumers are always analyzing what they could get instead for similar amount of money. For example, it's almost double the cost of a Lenovo Yoga 6 Ryzen 4700U/16GB/1TB convertible laptop/tablet with touch and pen inputs. I think if people get assurance that 2021 iPP will get MacOS that can also run iPadOS apps then it'll be less of a sting.

The large unanswered question is all around what the story will be with iPadOS 15. It is the dividing line between it being insanely priced or pretty compelling...

For instance, if it could allow a mobile professional to flip their equation a bit and go iMac/Mac mini + iPad instead of trying to do the same with a MacBook that could be a pretty compelling valuation story. Right now, iPadOS is so limited it is very hard to see the value of an iPad with 16GB of RAM. There are an extremely small number of workflows that the iPad allows with its current limitations that could even approach that limit.
Apple will never allow the iPad Pro to take the place of a MacBook Pro! You need both, plus an iPhone and a ? watch and a iMac Pro and a Mac Pro! And preferably you need to upgrade them every 2 years!

I see where you're coming from, but IMO you don't have enough faith in external SSDs. ? You could buy a 1 TB crazy fast M.2 SSD, a tiny enclosure for it like this, and if you want, a USB-C cable as short as 1ft. Problems with USB-C ports not having a strong connection are very rare on high-end devices like iPad Pro.

An SSD setup like that is so portable that it wouldn't even be an issue if you were traveling. Really no different than plugging in a charger. And you would save so much money compared to buying a 1 TB iPad. Plus external drives are perfect for the stuff that takes up the most storage, like movies and TV. Yes you could hold dozens of 4k HDR movies on the 1 TB iPad, but do you really need all those movies on there at once? What plane ride would be that long?

I'm like... philosophically against paying Apple's outrageous storage prices lol. Never upgrade it on my Macs. External SSDs have never failed me.

It's so nice to have an external SSD that you buy once and will last basically forever and then never have to pay Apple's extreme storage prices again.
External storage is quite limited on an iPad, though. Like, for instance, I’d want to be able to use Plex to sync movies or TV episodes to that storage but you can’t (or Plex can’t) as it only uses the sandboxed storage where the app lives.

I own both the 2020 (and have the M1 on the way) iPad Pros, that was after owning the 2018 and the 10.5" before it... I love my iPad Pros, LOVE them... but, I also own a Tab S7 from Samsung, and say what you want, but they've caught up. With the 120hz panels, the low frequency S-Pen input times, the new Snapdragons, etc. etc. etc. the hardware is there now, the iPad has competition, it's just most people don't think about Android as a viable alternative. In some ways it is, and in some ways it isn't, but I do think it's odd how people consider the iPad Pro so much more superior when the Tab S7 is a very serious piece of hardware.

Because tablet optimized apps for Android are virtually non-existent, that's where there's no competition.

I’ve never owned an iPad before (mine gets here May 21), so I haven’t had to deal with this before. Sounds really annoying :s I am very hopeful for WWDC though.

Infuse works with external.

Warning, don't use exFAT. Last time I tried (just Tuesday last week), the USB drive's filesystem got corrupted. Te Windows format dialog wouldn't work. I had to rebuild the MBR before I could reformat the drive so I could use it again.

I think the new iPad Pros would fly off the shelves if Parallels worked and people could load Windows 10, which is much more optimized for touch computing than macOS.
I think they already demonstrably do fly off the shelves lol

Do I think iPad pros are expensive? Yea.
Are they too expensive for my blood? Most days of the week almost certainly
Are they overpriced for what they are? I don’t really think so. There is a lot of hardware in there.

Considering I use my iPad as a glorified web browser, the air if not the entry level is the right iPad for me.

Agreed, they already fly off the shelves...should have worded it better.

I've actually found web browsing to be one of the most taxing things I do on the iPad. Most apps I use apart from MS Office seem to be fairly well-behaved but webapps tend not to be. Admittedly, it's common for me to have between 50-150 tabs open.

iOS 12 was very good with RAM but whatever changes Apple has made with iPadOS 13 seems to have increased RAM usage significantly.

I never used to get these on a 4GB RAM iPad. On 2GB RAM iPads, sometimes it gets so bad that the iPad restarts itself.

Yep.

BMWs are expensive. A Hyundai will do the same job. But you don't want a Hyundai, you want a BMW. So you'll need to pony up the 'BMW tax'.
Especially if you purchase a year or two Beemer. Well worth the depreciation price. :)

There is absolutely nothing strange with pricing of the M1 iPad. They reflect the M1 MacBook prices. Want to move from 512 to 1TB: $200, from 8GB RAM to 16GB RAM? $200. Want to go to 2TB? $400. Apple just bundles storage and RAM together for 1TB and 2 TB. And there is no cellular on Macs yet, and it will be similar ($200) when Macs get 5G.
So is the MacBook with those specs overpriced too?
Maybe because the Mac has a keyboard? But then the iPad has a touchscreen (and keyboards can be added at any price point, and some people actually prefer to be able to have OR not have a keyboard).
My guess is that in the end this is another software rant in disguise... (like "iPadOS is not worth those specs and prices")
How about a "proper" OS. iPads are gimp'd due to their OS. If Apple decides to make iPad OS "just like Mac OS" then why is Apple making such a big deal with the M1 laptops, Mini, ect. MacBooks will always be the top of the line product. Period.
Can't see iPad's EVER being able to replace a proper laptop. Folks seem to forget that alot of MacBook folks(like myself) want their laptops to use different platforms for different reasons(I use Parallels for Win10, Linux Mint, ect. for fun). Can't do that on an iPad.

Then buy a laptop. Apple isn’t discontinuing them. Some people find iPads more useful. Believe it or not, different people like different things. The iPadOS isn’t “gimped” - it’s just different, and it doesn’t do what you personally want.

Great responses for sure...reminds me again how the smartest people don’t waste their money.

Is it necessary to accuse people of not being smart just because they buy one?

I did.

I also have zero debt of any sort, over a million in retirement, and a 20 year old truck as my daily driver.

Are you insinuating I’m not smart just because I brought a $2,000 iPad?

I don't understand why justification is even necessary. "I wanted one and I can afford it so I bought one. And I'm happy about it." End of story.

I don't think OP is belittling anyone. What's "smart" is relative to one's needs and desires. Smart to others can be going high end no matter the cost. Much depends on one's financial condition. It's just his perspective which I find has some valid points.
