Did you see the demo where it uses ChatGPT? In those cases a dialog appears asking if you want to use ChatGPT. That is not part of the other experiences. They were very clear that that was making a clear distinction between their AI and ChatGPT. The text rewriting is not exclusive to ChatGPT. Other LLMs can do that including Apple's Ajax LLM.

With ChatGPT from OpenAI integrated into Siri and Writing Tools, you get even more expertise when it might be helpful for you — no need to jump between tools. Siri can tap into ChatGPT for certain requests, including questions about photos or documents. And with Compose in Writing Tools, you can create and illustrate original content from scratch.

So, ChatGPT with a pretty front end - well that was worth waiting for :). As is usually the case with Apple now, it's style over substance. Minimal innovation and 18 months late to the party.

Its recall. They are indexing files on the system. How are they able to pull your driver's license information from a photo you took to fill a form on a web page in safari?
11:12 amApple Intelligence is grounded in your personal information, accessing data from around your apps and what's on your screen. Suppose a meeting is being rescheduled for the afternoon, and I'm wondering if it's going to prevent me from getting to my daughter's performance on time. It can understand who my daughter is, the details she emailed several days ago, the schedule of my meeting, and the traffic between my office and the theater.

11:22 amIncludes a semantic index of photos, calendar events, and files. Includes things like concert tickets, links your friends have shared, and more.

Recall takes screenshots and stores them. It's almost like making a movie of what you're doing on-screen and storing it on-device.

Apple will just get info you already have on device (or maybe also as part of iCloud).

The difference is huge.

iPhone 15 Pro and higher is pretty steep requirements. That means the vast majority of iPhones users have 0 access to AI.
And thus, an incentive to buy a new device is born. I kept my last iPhone before 15 Pro for 5 years before I bought another one, because there wasn't any new feature or spec that warranted me spending the money. Apple is betting that on-device AI is worth buying a new phone.

They are indexing information you have on your device and not a standard OS file index. Trying to justify this as something different is facile.

I'm really tired of all these features available only in 1 language and mostly 1 country (US).

But not only AI features, also topographic maps are only available for the US and not even the whole country. Come on Apple, is it so difficult or expensive to buy some complete topo maps for the whole world? Definitely Apple Watch Ultra strongly needs those maps to be a truly competent outdoor watch like Suunto and Garmin's. I thought it was definitely around the corner but the years are passing...
I wonder if the mapping data is held under proprietary/copyright protection? Apple would have to pay a lot of money for access to potential compeitors' data. Apple Maps and Google Maps are separate for driving directions...

Does not apply here because Apple hardware and services are the product. Privacy is a feature. Your aphorism does not cover all scenarios.
Yeah why don’t we get unlimited cloud backups for free then? Why Aren’t the rest of the services free? It’s not a secret the most valuable thing right now is data. The more data you can get your hands on to train a model the better.

When literally everyone else offers a free cloud product it’s bad, but when Apple does it it’s fine...

Indexing what you have on your device doesn't add original data. If I delete a document on device, it will also be deleted from the index. That index won't contain thousands of screenshots of what I did on my Mac the last few weeks or months.

Storing what I belive is thousands of screenshots adds an enormous amount of information, also of things you don't want stored.

The difference is not the indexing, it's the amount of data stored and the kind of data stored.

Let's say you have two browsers:

1) Stores every URL you visit.

2) Stores every URL you visit + everything you did on every website, which button you clicked, what you typed into a field on a form, etc.

To me the security and privacy implications between these two browsers are huge.

Yes, but it literally asks you if you want to use ChatGPT.

More sophisticated text generation will indeed be handled by GPT. But my guess is, that you will be able to turn that off if you don't want/need it.
In all the examples they showed the OS asks you if you want to use ChatGPT, you literally have to agree to it.

I don't think so. At all. They are doing great integration of AI across the whole OSs and apps, with privacy for local requests, and taking advantage of third party AI engines out there (they said ChatGPT is only the first).

I loved what they introduced today, really.

Wow so you are telling me old Android phones can do AI, but the mighty apple 14 pro cannot?

Google did the work that became ChatGPT, FYI. If putting ARM into everything is so easy, why has it taken years to even have any competition? Here's the issue: you do not recognize the work Apple IS doing in these areas because you're trying to minimize and fit it into your biased view.
My thought, why is the chip that they supposedly buy off the shelf so much better than the competition unless those claims/reports are not true but seems pretty established at this point

This is an OS thing. Since the only other OSes with any footprint are Windows and Linux, and Linux doesn't really have an owner/ecosystem, this needed to be backed by Microsoft.

Obligatory "can I turn it off" question. Anyone with the betas want to confirm Y/N?

Apple “Intelligence” my butt. Apple trying to pretend they did the hard, intellectual work when this is just a repackaged ChatGPT program. It’s the same shenanigans they pulled with Apple Silicon where they tried to pretend their “designs” are the reasons their chips performed well when chip design is insignificant and about as hard intellectually as ordering pizza.

Stop taking credit for other company’s inventions!
I don’t think you understand how AI / ML works. And i don’t think you listened to what Craig said.
Apple has been using AI for a long time. If you don’t know that, you need to go back in time.
They did not use AI to answer question, they used it in different domain.
Now, chatGPT is great to help with general question, something that has nothing to do with you.

Apple is using AI for you. For the Iphone, Mac OS user to help them be more productive. They have taken their OS to the next level. I was waiting for this. Shortcut was just a simple example of what you could do. Now, your iPhone will have context about you. It will understand you, your relations and help you as an assistant. This is Big !!

Just for work, all the emails, text you cat get. This is going to increase Productivyt. It has nothing to do with ChatGPT.
Anybody can create ML models. Apple just did not create one to answer general questions. They created one for the hardware and software. Big diff !!

Will chat GPT be able to tell me when my mom arrive at the airport, which restaurant that correspond to her favorite food is close by and how long it will take to get there and show me on Map? No.

I love how Craig says these features are coming later, we’ve been around long enough to know that that means iOS 19. o_O

Lol, Steve Jobs rolling in his grave. Apple is now a follower instead of a leader.
I think Tim C took Apple way further that Steve might have had.
I’m not worried about Apple. They have smart people and they innovate.

A follower? You’re funny. Is there a PC, Phone, tablet that can do what Craig just described?
No.
ChatGPT is just a question and Answer based on context you provide.
Ask ChatGPT: What restaurant do you recommend i go to next to the airport my mom is arriving tomorrow?

ChatGPT answer: …………….???……
