The whole compose and rewrite feature is ChatGPT.

Apples intelligence? Just more of the same we’re used to. Anything significant will be handed off to ChatGPT.
I don't think this is true, they would have stated that its being handed off to ChatGPT in those cases. My first thought was that this looks like Grammarly. This isn't new tech, it's possible Apple developed it in-house or it comes from one of the AI startups they've purchased over the years. While it wasn't mind-blowing, examples like these that seemed to come from within the company were hopeful hints that they're taking the catch-up game seriously, same with the Private Cloud powered by Apple Silicon servers.

iPhone 15 Pro and higher is pretty steep requirements. That means the vast majority of iPhones users have 0 access to AI.

Are you for real? Apple never gives credit to their suppliers. He’ll would have to freeze over before Apple admitted they’re using ChatGPT technology.

Well, it doesn't have a neural engine as capable as the 15Pro... what can Apple do about that? It's unfortunate, for sure, but **** happens.
Does the iPhone 14 pro max have a worse neural engine than my M1 mini? I'm doubtful

Maybe they will use the OpenAI models for the rewrite feature. But the presentation was pretty clear, that compute is done on Apple servers.
It was pretty clear nothing from Apple Inteligence is done by chat gpt. The only thing they are using ChatGPT for is when you use Siri and they will tell you if you want to do the search on ChatGPT. It’s not integrated, it’s not doing any of the queries, it’s literally just an external link

More sophisticated text generation will indeed be handled by GPT. But my guess is, that you will be able to turn that off if you don't want/need it.

While I'm a subscriber and fan of ChatGPT - I can say, from the broad brush strokes I've seen today, I'll prefer Apple Intelligence for a better 'context aware' and 'privacy respecting' AI compared to ChatGPT - I'll give it a chance.

OpenAI never adequately addresses privacy...

Plus, Apple play games with their TOPS numbers- you can't compare all of their numbers as you would expect, as they're calculated differently.
Apple used to post 16-bit numbers but the industry has settle on using 8-bit tops numbers for stats so Apple has followed suite to be consistant.

Interesting. Does that explain the huge jump in TOPS for the NPU inside the 15 Pro SOC?

It went from 17 TOPS (A16) to 35 TOPS (A17) in just one generation.

What would you use them for? Apple doesn’t have a server OS or middleware anymore.
Their new Private Cloud Compute runs a paired down version of iOS with some added management layers running on M2 Ultra processors. They said that they removed support for persistent storage for privacy sake. It will be all in-memory.

I'm really tired of all these features available only in 1 language and mostly 1 country (US).

But not only AI features, also topographic maps are only available for the US and not even the whole country. Come on Apple, is it so difficult or expensive to buy some complete topo maps for the whole world? Definitely Apple Watch Ultra strongly needs those maps to be a truly competent outdoor watch like Suunto and Garmin's. I thought it was definitely around the corner but the years are passing...

this thread finally taught me how to ignore someone and—oh my god, all of you need to stop taking the bait from one single troll in this 200+ comment thread. 😂

anyway—call me crazy, I think this stuff is cool. really cool. Apple made it damn clear how much of this is done on-device and, as others have already said, they deserve credit for that. a partnership with OpenAI was inevitable, and their solution for walking the rope between on-device processing and cloud processing strikes me as incredibly well-thought-out.

also, **** Gurman for leaking virtually everything important from the keynote. I hope that was some kind of weird hail mary on Apple's part, in an attempt to suss out the mole who's been leaking confidential information to him for months/years. I like rumors as much as the next macrumors.com commenter; surprises are fun, and Gurman takes all that fun out of the keynotes.

The fact that the "Apple Intelligence" features are only available on the iPhone 15 Pro/Max is absolutely unnecessary, and pushing towards e-waste. Is has the same number of "neural cores" as the iPhone 14 Pro/Max ffs!

What a horrible review. You basically just rewrote their press release. I say this as an Apple employee. It’s awful. Most employees think it’s awful. Apple will NEVER do AI right given our emphasis on family friendly and privacy. The actual product is way worse than this. It’s Siri 2.0.
Do you not understand the difference between a report and a review? I bet AI could help you with that 🤔

They did not update the old numbers, though...

Plus, there's a lot more to neural engines than can be compared via TOPS.
