Did you upgrade the RAM yourself? Could you run the test with only 512Mb and see what effect it has?

Also, did you use your machine extensively before moving to 1.5Gb? Did it make a big difference? My 20" Core Duo seems a bit sluggish. Extra 1Gb hasn't arrived yet so I'm still running at 512.
Sorry, but I'm not really up to taking out the RAM and running the test, but it made a world of difference when I added the extra 1GB.

Don't fret, the RAM will make your machine much snappier.

Adobe CS + RAM question

iMac core duo 17" w/ a 24" Dell in tandem, 1.5GB of RAM

51 seconds in Adobe CS.

Amazing time through emulation. Can't wait to see what these puppies can do natively.

I'm expecting my MacIntel 17" in about a week or so.
There was a question about "matching" RAM but I noticed
that you're using 1.5 GB. Any issues?
Thanks,
Chuck

Test 1 (Pony - Redial Blur) - 57 Seconds
Test 2 (Chucks Action) - 12 Seconds

InteliMac Dual 2.0 GHz | 2GB RAM | 256MB VRAM (ATI X1600)

Hey BB, your machine is pretty much just what I really want to get...

Can you do another test for me, which is a bit beefier and should highlight the differences a bit better.

Click here for the test photo (same one as before)
Click here for the new Action

This one took me 6min 33sec! from hitting play, to the photo disappearing.
(on my 1Ghz 17" Powerbook with 1Gb RAM)

Also - do you think that the extra VRAM (to 256) will be useful for anything other than gaming? Like will it make working in iMovie more seemless? If not, I won't bother with it, but if it will be useful for video editing I might invest the extra money.

Thanks - I can't wait to see your results for this test (call it 2B). And what version of Photoshop are you using?

Cheers,
Chuck.

I will give it a try in the next 30 minutes for you - thanks for making hte action (much easier)

personally i think the 256 upgrade is a no brainer - i will be running dual monitors .... its a definite plus for the money

Apple are slowly begining to offload some of the cpu tasks to the gfx card. The next version of Final Cut Studio (not the universal update in March) will probably feature more transitions and effects offloaded to the GPU.

Motion 2 really pushes the GPU more than any other App at the moment.

The extra £50 / $75 is worth it as you can't update that part again in the future.

Also if your running two monitors each monitor is allocated 50% of the GPU. So each display will have 128/128 with the 256 rather than 64/64 with the current GPU..

Test 2b (Chuck Action 2) - 2Minutes 36 Seconds

CS2

Do you have CS bakedbeans? I found CS2 to be a buggy pile of crap compared to CS. Bridge is slow and useless - a complete memory hog compared to FileBrowser and also CS2 randomly stops whilst your selecting a layer or text.. It's much slower than working with CS..

So It would be interesting to see results from both versions running the test through Rosetta.....

12 inch Powerbook (rev B.)

1 GHz G4
1.25 GB RAM
4200 rpm Toshiba
CS

3:08

I'm quite happy with that actually i was worried that it would be a lot longer with but thats ok in my book. :)

That's awesome BB, it means Photoshop on my new machine will be at least twice as quick as this one, even under Rosetta.

Thanks also for the info about VRAM. I think I'll go with 256 as I might use this Powerbook as a second monitor for the iMac. Can you do that?

And BB - have you noticed a hot spot at the bottom of the screen? And the curser lag that everyone's talking about? Any other quirks?

Chuck.

256 is a wise choice for the cost differential.

NO :( you can't use your powerbook as a second monitor for the iMac.

18.9 sec

quad 4x 2,5 ghz
2,5 gig ram
250 gig hardrive 7.200

The PB lcd can't be used as an external monitor ...

You can however offload your pb desktop to an external monitor though...don't fool yourself with saying the iMac is that though hehe :D It's tricky like that - all slim and all

You need to get a mini dvi/vga connector to connect from the back of your imac to another monitor you have sitting somewhere

No, no hot spot and no lag (i dont think many have spoke about it have they? ive heard one)

Ohhh Jalle, that is a sweet machine. Pity I don't have a spare $6500 (Australian) for that machine and a monitor!

What a bummer about not being able to use this PB as a second monitor. Grrr... Well the bigger screen will be a nice change anyhow.

Thanks everyone for your help and advice!

Whaaaat?

Chucks action took 1:20 on my Dual Core 2.0Ghz. Granted, I only have 512Mb of RAM, but I really don't think that is going to make 6x difference.

You timed it from hitting play, until the photo was saved as a tiff and then closed?

Johnny, don't forget she's talking about the first test I posted there, not the second which was a lot beefier.

Okay...

Well then I'd say Photoshop just craves the extra RAM. It's a shame you can't put more in the iMacs, but then I guess it would be a prosumer model. (or a confessional model? :) )

Chuck.

I'll get back to you guys on Wednesday (when my extra Gb of ram is due to arrive)

I did the test twice - but I will do it again just to make sure.
