Is it just me or do the speed limit signs look slightly different?

I must be jumping to different servers. On my way to get dinner, I had no road labels at all for the entire trip.

But on the way home, all of the labels were back. And once home, I noticed that my GPS signal was stronger and more accurate than it’s been in weeks.

The greener coloring is so important. For the folks in old Maps areas but with the updated terrain, the large splashes of lighter ground coloring makes smaller roads nearly illegible at anything other than a very close zoom level.

CarPlay was being somewhat finiky with me last night when leaving Detroit. I was having trouble syncing the GPS signal which could also be related to my car, but it has never happened before. It kept moving the route and while showing me as being at the correct spot on the map, it wasn't updating the route properly to be where I was...hah. Not a good thing to happen in downtown Detroit, but I had already noticed where I needed to go while it was doing this, so I just waited for it to catch up...which it did and the rest of my 2.5 hour trip was fine.

I even got the severe thunderstorm warning...which was real, but it had pretty much broken up by the time I got to that area.

Here’s what it looks like on the phone and CarPlay and also what shows when you hit the “more info” button.

Definitely different set-ups depending on the server you hit. Went to the dentist this morning, same exact route to and from. On the way there, no speed limits in Dashboard mode…on the way back speed limits were there in Dashboard mode. And while it could be my imagination, it feels like the colors were slightly richer on the way home.

How did you get the camera angle so low in CarPlay? It looks awesome and gives you a better sense of where you are. When I drive, the camera is much higher:
In your screenshot, you're on a highway.

Apple Maps navigation in CarPlay has four standard views, depending on the type of road you're driving on.

1) A small-time local road -- camera is zoomed in close, and angled right behind your car, allowing you to see the horizon.

2) A slightly busier local road -- camera is zoomed out a bit further, and angled a bit more down. You can still see the horizon, but not as much.

3) A secondary road which happens to also be designated as a State Route or County Route -- camera is zoomed out about the same as view #2, but angled more downward. You see no horizon in this view, but still see 3D buildings.

4) Highways -- camera is zoomed out just far enough that the 3D buildings disappear, and angled downward towards your car, such that no horizon is visible.

I'll post screenshots of the four main camera angles in the near future.

Wow...glad you posted that. Noticed it last night (I've been checking L.A. and NYC at least once a day for changes).

I work a about 5 blocks away when I'm in NYC, so it's in the area I usually check first. Noticed it was pretty "blank"...hah

Interesting. Thanks for the detailed reply. I'll have to keep a lookout for the different angles when I drive home after work. I wish it was always a lower angle. I feel like it gives a better perspective of where you are.

It can also vary based on how far you are from your next “turn.”

That factor will always override the guidelines above as Apple tries to show you as much of the route as possible. But once you get within a certain distance of your next turn, even in the high view mode on a highway, it will start to zoom in so you can easily see what your next move is.

It’s pretty impressive when you can actually watch how it happens during the 100’s of different data points it takes into consideration.

Simply record the screen while using it on your phone to check it out. Or if you are able to set up a camera to record CarPlay…I’m actually looking into that with a separate phone I have just so I can shoot video of CarPlay routing.

Can‘t wait to have this in Germany in 2128.

…and when will Google or any other mapping service have this?

I’ll just be happy with the detailed street info when that comes out this year in new Maps areas.

I think just seeing the trees, elevation and detailed POI data they are adding to major cities is a sign that at least that level of detail will be available even in my small part of the world someday.

It was a joke. All I‘m really waiting for is that goddamn POI upgrade with the native rating system. That‘s what Apple Maps needs, not more detail IMHO.

Apple Maps POI is literally hell here.

Hah…I know…but not everyone that visits here knows you are a regular contributor and would not DARE pull that “I’ll expect to see that in 2048 in my country” crap that people pull on the public news posts. ;)

And I’m really surprised that the US hasn’t received the rating option. I also can’t believe that Apple has some sort of deal with Yelp that prevents them from launching it since there doesn’t seem to be a legal reason why they can’t do it.

They also wouldn’t make it so visible in iOS 15 without it probably coming soon.

Or…how about turning on user submitted road reports?? Actually…I haven’t been in my car in a day, so maybe they did with the latest update. :p

I miss Randy’s Donuts.

I actually searched for that one hoping it would come up as being rendered. For some reason, not all of the rendered POI’s have very clear “info bubbles” like San Francisco has.

Maybe that will change. I basically zoomed in and scanned the entire city. I’m sure I missed a bunch.
