I just came back from a morning drive and decided to test this out again. Waze actually does have a similar lag but it's not as bad as Apple Maps while Google Maps remains the most accurate regarding the location tracking while navigating.

Used an iPhone 13 PM and X for this unscientific experiment with similar results on both devices and on freeway, suburban, and urban routes.
Maybe you should go see an Apple technician

I just watched my map closely to see if I have the lag. It is there. Nothing crazy, but the map is behind my position when I’m driving. It’s more noticeable on streets. When the map zooms out really far on the freeway and you’re going fast, it’s not noticeable. I will have to try Google Maps to compare.

Yep. That’s exactly it! If you’re familiar with your route or on the freeway it’s not noticeable but your vehicle is always slightly ahead of the map by a few yards or so.

Keep an eye out when turning or approaching street corners and intersections and you’ll see it.

I think it’s something I can live with once I get more experience on the road and not as reliant on GPS but right now I’m unfortunately going to stick to Google Maps.

Is it just CarPlay? Just on the phone? Both?

Reddit thread shows new 3D city experience in Montreal through a glitch. You zoom out to no buildings and then zoom in real fast and they will show up.

I only got it to work for a second and wasn’t zoomed in enough, but I did see the new detailed building.

EDIT: Happening in Toronto as well. Maybe we’ll see Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver detailed cities in the next week!

Yes, I also think Apple could quickly release Montreal and Toronto. Maybe for Vancouver will be released a little later.

I am curious to know what could be the next cities to receive the detailed city experience. If Apple follows its logic, could we perhaps have Portuguese and Spanish cities?

Finally, Apple has still not started testing the expansion of the new Maps (Japan, Germany or France), will Apple do as last year, with a start of testing in April to release the new map during the WWDC in June?

One interesting thing I saw on Reddit is that cycling directions work in Washington, DC but it’s not listed on Apple’s website yet. I tested it and it does indeed work.

I still think it's suspicious that the Vegas casinos are appearing *later* than the other 3D buildings. Also an unfortunate oddity is that the casinos which feature shopping areas appear on the map as a "mall building", so when you zoom in on that casino, the building vanishes in order to give you an indoor map of the shopping area.

Makes sense I reckon. Apple announced with the Australian release that Melbourne and Sydney will be getting AR directions in 2020 so I reckon they are a safe bet for getting the detailed city experience as well.

Thoughts on Map GPS delay…I DO see it, but since I’m not traveling in a congested street area, it really isn’t noticeable unless you are really watching the screen during turns. I imagine this is why you don’t hear too many complaints about it. I can see where this would be a HUGE issue for city driving with short blocks, alleys, etc.

It’s very consistent from what I am seeing, so I’m guessing it is NOT a gps issue and more of a Maps issue interpreting GPS signal to map position. Hopefully that means a quick fix.

Sending a note to Apple Maps and via feedback app.

I tested the Maps delay in both Apple and Google variations on my CarPlay unit, and I'll say this:

Apple is definitely two or three seconds behind where I'm at. It's most noticeable when I'm crossing intersections and I'm through the intersection and CarPlay shows me entering the intersection.

HOWEVER...

Google's "arrow" icon that represents my car is so big, that it actually obscures the road on the map to the degree I can't actually tell. The icon representing me covers the entire intersection, so it hides the lag (if there is one)

Well played, Google.

Makes you wonder if its a gyro/accelerometer issue rather than GPS….

For the people that have the position lag issue. I think CarPlay gets the position info from the car's GPS with some makes. The Mercedes manual explicitly says that CarPlay gets the GPS info from the car during navigation. There might be an issue there that is causing the lag.

It uses both the car and phone GPS...but that is why I think it isn't a GPS specific issue.

And timing it again on a couple of drives today, depending on speed, it is about a .5 to 1 second delay. Sorry @Canyda ... 2-3 seconds is a lifetime if you counted it out and could miss 3 streets in that time ;)

Again, doesn't affect my typical "rural" driving that much, but it is SO annoying when you stare at the screen and your position on the road doesn't exactly match that on the screen when moving. And I can only imagine missing a quick turn in tight city driving.

Yes, that's fair. I watched it more closely today and counted, and you're correct, it's more like a half-second to a full second. Three seconds had me at the *next* intersection. :D

So I happily concede that point.

It does seem like a lifetime when you watch it though...hah. I forgot I have an appointment downtown at lunch. Going to turn on turn-by-turn and see how it does. Not exactly short city blocks around me, but maybe I can film it with my Pixel and post to my YouTube channel.

Couple of videos and observances.

1. Highway speed does seem to make a difference...and I don't mean you don't notice it because it doesn't matter or that you are going too fast. You can clearly see that Maps is right on target at speeds over 50-55 mph and in some cases, I felt like it was even ahead of real world.

2. Below 50-55 mph, you can see Maps fall behind. Notice the exit, overpasses, cross streets and turns. All delayed that .5-1 seconds.

For me it happens with or without CarPlay. It's fine for country driving but it gets pretty old when I'm back in the city.

So it may be the accelerometer or it may be a lag in screen drawing.

It would interesting to see if this occurs as frequently in an “always north” map orientation (zoom out / overview mode) as it would in a “driving direction is always up” orientation (zoom in / turn-by-turn mode) . The former would seemingly have fewer screen draws as only the vehicle icon is moving. Will have to try this.

Apple sent an email to me this afternoon with a link to enable additional Maps logging on my phone so they can "see" the issue. Then when I submit via feedback, the updated logging tool will give them more info...basically a different profile being added to my phone. I don;t think I've ever been asked for this before??

Anything that gives them the data they need to fix is alright with me I guess.
