If their marketing can tie their moves into sustainability and animal welfare messaging, I can hardly blame them for that, either. It’s in keeping with the branding they’re trying to enhance.
With Sustainability comes "USABILITY" if it's not durable what they point.

When I upgrade I’m going third party. Cheaper and potentially better quality.

Me too.

Every other third party case I have had previously went the distance. For the first time, I got an official Apple silicone case for my iPhone 13. 2x the price of a 3rd party case but I figured it was worth it because...Apple. It was not worth it. The silicone case started falling apart soon after purchase. Never been dropped, absolutely normal use. Just started falling apart on it's own. By the time I got back to an Apple store they said it out of warranty and there was nothing they could do. But they did suggest looking for a more robust case on Amazon as these cases from Apple do tend to fall apart. I feel like I got punk'd.

This is disappointing as I was hoping to buy a bright color when I get an iPhone 15, and I would never buy a leather case, so hopefully I like the new non-leather fine-woven case.

This product was never worth the asking price. Felt nice and comfy - for the first 2 weeks. And then the horror of watching your £50 case dis-integrate, tiny flake at a time...
I always bought leather cases but there is no stock of the leather cases for the 12/12 Pro other than counterfeit so I had to get the silicone.

Had it since late July, so far way better than expected. Still
miss the leather feel, but no scratches, dents, chips or anything despite falls, fingernail scratches, and touching phone with fingers contaminated with various substances.

And it spends time in my front pocket when not in use.

So like anything, YMMV.

New rubber-band phone case?

Apart from the first few leather cases, Apple accessories have been overpriced and underwhelming. I've just never been impressed when compared to reasonably priced alternatives.

Besides, I've always assumed buyers of these products are the type to only use Apple-branded cables and chargers too, if you know what I mean. 😵‍💫

Tried that in Berlin and they send me away for „normal tear and wear“. Been rocking a 2,49€ version from AliExpress since

I would have tried convincing them again, just because their cases are so expensive and they advertise them as “Like every Apple-designed case, it undergoes thousands of hours of testing throughout the design and manufacturing process.” So I would argue that chipping away is not a normal wear and tear.

Just chiming in. When I got my 12 mini I got an Apple Silicon case. Less than a month later it started flaking and cracked. Apple Store said I must have been extremely rough on the case...
Bought a 3rd party (Ideal of Sweden) for half of Apple's price that's been holding up for more than two years now.

of course they all do this now because they have to compensate for the new "revolutionary usb c cables" because all the lightning ones have to to in the trash now

Actually, the manufacture of cow skin leather is extremely harmful to the environment in production, more so than all other materials except for alpaca wool and silk.
It sounds like avoiding the manufacture and 'wasting' the cow leather is better than the process of using it commercially.

I’d probably buy a case made from alpaca wool. Probably would need to be about a metre thick to offer any protection, but think of the snuggles!

Curious to see what material they come up with. My guess is some kind of plastic that is made from renewable sources like corn.

Do hope they make something that is actually sustainable, because many plastics made from renewable sources like corn (at least that's better than oil) still don't really compost/degrade at all, or only in very specific situations that will never happen if you just throw them in the trash. Meaning you'll end up with plastic in the environment for the next 1000 years anyway.

The Apple silicon cases as just massively overpriced garbage products. Guaranteed to fall apart within 2 years , if not a year. My last case was an otterbox one and is superior in every way durability wise.

That’s fine. (IMO) Apple’s cases aren’t that good compared to third-party cases at the same (or often lower) price point.

So if Apple wants to go with different material, maybe that’s for the best.

I admire Apple's commitment to using green materials and advancing towards a circular loop production, each year - they really seem to mean it.

And it'll be a cost saver for them in the medium to long term too, I'm sure. So it's all good.

Is this a political comment? I hope not.

Have had my silicon case on my 13 pro max since new - so coming up to 2 years now. No issues at all. It looks mint to this day!
