My partner had a j Apple-branded clear case on their XS. I was disappointed that it yellowed so quickly.
Have they made any improvements in that regard?
Hmmm mine have not done that. I’ve only had them maybe for the past 3 or 4 years. All have been great. But I do get a new iPhone and case every year. Although this year I’m hoping the titanium would give me the confidence to ditch the case

The silicon bands are great.

The silicon cases, like the leather cases, break too easily over time and aren't worth the price.

I don’t usually have a case on my iPhone with the exception of when I go running. The silicone cases have a good grip to them and bounce right off the pavement if I happen to drop my phone. They do chip over time in normal use as some have mentioned. I hope their replacements are just as grippy.

What I’ll really miss is the original fluoroelastomer Apple Watch sport bands. They’re very comfortable and feel secure on the wrist. They’re also extremely long lasting. I still have my original Apple Watch series 0 bands. They’re almost 9 years old and they feel like the day I bought them. Worth every penny.

I don’t know about the phones, but I have always had the sport band on the watch. They better continue this as every other band I’ve tried so far gives me rashes during workouts. Not breathable enough

I’ve generally used their leather cases but I look forward to a vegan option if it has a similar feel.

The silicon cases never appealed to me, they feel weird and don’t slide out of the pocket easily.

Silicone cases are the only cases I ever get for my iPhones. They are comfortable and last a long time. Here’s hoping whatever they replace it with is as durable and the same price!
I've owned one and it fell apart in less than half a year.

My silicone case for my iP 12 mini disintegrated got a 13 standard with a silicone case that also fell apart Si I got a 14 pro and tried my luck once again with another silicone case and once again fell apart I treat my phones well those apple silicone cases look good just don't hold up I switched to the apple leather case 3 mo. ago and I love it

I don't remember at what point my partner's case started yellowing (they had their XS a couple of years), but by the end, it was definitely nicotine-stained.

I too am wondering if the Ti frame will see me going careless again this cycle. Even when I do get a case, I take them off periodically. I enjoy the devices so much more sans case. With the included Apple Care in iUP, you'd think I'd just roll au natural. Looking forward to learning more on Tuesday.

The silicone case lasted less than a year, IIRC, as the plastic frame cracked. Switched to a leather case (which I think also has a plastic frame) and it's holding up better, so far.

Sometimes APPLE goes too far
The leather skins are a by product of animals killed for their meat
The leather used is eco friendly
So why switch??
Bottom Line: there’s a few other companies that will be selling iPhone 15 leather cases you decide what you want
That’s not true at all. Leather is an industry, not a “use every part of the buffalo” fantasy, and the chemicals used to treat it and make products are very toxic. I’ve got lots of leather stuff, I’m not trying to act sanctimonious. It’s just wrong to say your leather iPhone case is eco-friendly

Unless they end up using that new mushroom leather that wears like real leather, I'm going to assume this new material will be similar to alcantara which means it will collect stains, dirt, and odors very quickly and you won't be able to clean it without destroying it. In my experience, whenever products go "eco-friendly" or "vegan" it translates to "We're cutting costs with inferior materials that wear out faster, but we'll slap a virtuous label on the cheap crap so we can still charge as much or more for it". I'd really love to be proven wrong about this by at least one company in my lifetime, but I'm not holding my breath 🙃

I might be convinced that they truly believed in the environmentally friendly angle if Apple didn't change the design of each new iphone juuust enough starting with the 11 so that you have to buy new cases every year. I still use old iphone 7 cases on my SE 3, and I was hoping to be able to keep my favorite 13 pro cases to use on my 14 pro but nope, they just barely don't fit anymore. Reusing accessories is far more environmentally friendly than buying new ones every year, even if they're made of virgin unicorn hair ethically sourced by fairly-compensated artisans. And where's the case recycling program since they care so much about the environment?

Regardless I'll continue not buying Apple branded cases until they show up at TJMaxx and Marshall's at 70% off, but it would be really nice to be able to reuse our cases for several generations like we used to or at least recycle the old ones.

I have my fair share of criticisms of Tim Cook’s reign as Apple CEO, but I respectfully disagree that this move qualifies as a grift. Everyone has been complaining for ages how stagnant Apple’s product lines have become. It is as good a time as any for a major refresh.

If their marketing can tie their moves into sustainability and animal welfare messaging, I can hardly blame them for that, either. It’s in keeping with the branding they’re trying to enhance.
Agree.

Same folks who want companies to walk their talk criticize them when they do.

It's a no win situation.

I don’t want to pre-judge the message that Apple is going to communicate with this particular product, but at the end of the day Apple are capitalists. The messaging is going to be oozing with every possible buzzword that makes each demographic feel good:

  • the people concerned with personal safety (satellite calls, crash detection)
  • the people who demand cutting edge tech (new processors, percentage improvements, battery life)
  • the people who care about the environment (recycled metals, sustainability, responsibly sourced)
  • the general populace (shiny phone, emojis, FaceTime conversations showing a family of perfectly make-upped actors whose members are all a different race)
If Apple genuinely denounces silicone cases (after distributing them for years), then I expect Apple to offer customers a program to “responsibly” recycle them at no cost. And who better to lead that effort than Apple. However, if Apple tells retail customers to toss the old cases, I can only assume it was always about the benjamins.

That’s why I am now going to buy 2 cases if I continue to upgrade yearly. I hate that I can’t reuse the cases from my 12PM and 14PM for the 15PM. If I can’t sell the cases, they will more than likely end up in the trash.

Apple never denounce the old. They just stop making it, and praise the new.

I never liked the silicone cases, they offered little protection and wore out (got loose and floppy) pretty quickly. They should use fluoroelastomer for phone cases, those would actually last and offer better protection. The leather cases have always been an expensive joke.

For watch bands, I wish they could find a way of using cane toad skins. That would be a positive contribution to the environment.

I had some silicone cases that held up really well on the iPhone 6-8Plus series. I gave them to my dad who used them for his phone until he passed away a little over a year ago. I saw them when I brought his phone back to my house and they still looked good. He did use them on a rotating basis as I did. Some of the older cases did have chipped edges and corners but by then they were well and truly used.

I started having problems with the silicone cases around iPhone X. I barely got to use one when it got a weird stain on it and I never figured out where or how as I hadn’t set it down anywhere or spilled anything. It had a very sticky texture anyway from the box. I wonder if the stain came from the silicone itself somehow.

In my observation they really got delicate around the change to flat edges for iPhone 12.

I could feel a change in their quality but I am mystified what Apple changed and why.

Well, it seems it's time for case material to be charged. I need to see 12th Sept for what it really is. More rumors upset people.

I had a curious issue once, but I can’t remember which phone generation that was. I bought a product red silicone case but it was too tight. So much so that the power button on the top of the phone was permanently pressed. I took it to the Apple Store for a replacement, but all cases they had on the shelf were like that. The Apple Store guy opened several of them, they all kept the power button pushed in when attached to the phone.

I thought that was a strange thing to happen with an original Apple accessory and suspected they may have had a recent change in suppliers or something.
