I don't think the "cardholder verification" means what we think it means. I regularly use Apple Pay for over £30 at Aldi on a weekly basis and the receipt always states "no cardholder verification" and just tonight I was in Chiquitos and paid £38 with Apple Pay and my receipt still said "no cardholder verification".

I'm thinking it's part of the setup the till operater/terminal merchant sets... as like with Apple Pay as a whole there's lots of inconsistency.

If say it's a manual change that someone needs to make to change to 'Verified by Mobile Device" or "Cardholder Verified"... then it may be forgotten or just not changed in some cases?

A benefit of ApplePay that I discovered today. Had to cancel my Amex card on Monday as I lost it after using for bus in London (should have used ApplePay but that's another matter!). Was told I'd receive my card in 2 days. Last night I received email telling me that my phone details had been updated & I could now use Amex again in ApplePay even though I don't yet have my card. That's rather good I thought.

I think the Aldi tills are set up weirdly. When it says 'no cardholder verification' the till shows that you have to sign a piece of paper (they don't always make you though).

Also, Caffè Nero have just launched an app and the description mentions you can have their loyalty card in Apple Wallet - doesn't seem to be live yet though. Perhaps at this rate they'll join Twitter by 2030.

Interesting. I hope I'm never asked to sign as this takes away from the speed of Apple Pay. Aldi care too much about checkout speed that they'd just not bother haha.

Definitely have to check out the Nero app! Thanks for the heads up.

EDIT: Had a look at the Nero app. Looks polished but the loyalty card isn't properly integrated with Apple Pay as I was hoping. It looks similar to PayQwik, add your card to their app and scan a QR code to pay and collect loyalty points in one go.

Have just downloaded it myself; I haven't got an existing loyalty card or anything for Café Nero.

Tapped the Collect Stamps only option and its created a pass for Wallet (like Starbucks):

Just tried to pay for parking with Apple Pay at the hospital. Declined twice. Had to use my contactless card. Strange.

Hmmm. That's a strange one. The only time I've encountered any problems it's because I've had to insert my card to complete a PIN check...

As for signing a receipt I've had to do that once in a Co-Op. Wasn't that long after Apple Pay had launched over here in the U.K. Wonder if the transaction took place off-line (system was down) and the amount I'd spent was over their floor limit?

I find it annoying that we have to verify our PIN on occasion with Apple Pay, isn't it the point to not have to carry your actual card around with you?

What bank/card provider was this with? I've not experienced that.

Mine was Santander.

Only happened once. Used to work in another shop myself and if the systems went down it'd process the transaction offline and asked the customer for a signature (was Chip & PIN mind).

^ problem is with the contactless infrastructure not apple pay. in theory you should never have to enter a pin when using apple pay proper, but when you're piggy backing onto regular contactless payments the reader will have no idea you're not using a regular ol' contactless card thats being held in front of the reader.

the contactless setup in china is probably the best apple pay experience you could get but it comes at the price of all transactions being online (through China UnionPay) which probably wouldn't be possible eleswhere; contactless isn't a separate thing there, just a replacement for reading the chip in a chip and pin card (meaning if the bank wants you to put in your pin, you don't need to put the card in a chip and pin reader - it already has all the info it needs from the contactless swipe and you just put your pin in. same also works with apple pay)

I don't think those machines are live. I.E. they store the card details until a later point where they are connected instead of sending over the details immediately. Because of this they can't check for the authority from the encryption, so Apple Pay and other forms of encrypted payments are declined.

How it's looking at the moment both Visa and American Express are proposing to conduct contactless transactions online because of the spate of banks who've had cards reported lost/stolen and people have fraudulently had money taken from their accounts because the card still works.

I've pretty much found, when I've used Apple Pay, that the transactions are online. Take Lloyds Bank for example. With Apple Pay the amount shows up in my pending transactions online; if I use my physical card it doesn't appear until the payment is debited.

I don't understand why the banks don't authorise all their contactless transactions online. It would, in most cases, only add a second or two on to the transaction time.

Exactly. And let's face it contactless payments aren't exactly that slow as it is.

Would be interesting to see the figures for contactless fraud in Australia where they have higher limits for physical card transactions.

if they did move to online-only... it'd mean they could do interesting things with contactless in general rather than simply foist a fixed limit on everyone. in addition to what i wrote above about China UnionPay, for debit cards you can set aside whatever amount of money you want and this is treated like cash - no pin would be required til its gone, however much you've put in. you could set aside £200 and use that in one transaction if you wanted... or you could have 0 and then you'd have to authenticate every transaction with a pin. it'd surely be better than the status quo, and eliminate a lot of the "omg i don't want contactless on my card" worries a lot of us brits seem have.
