Hello Mr

You can now make payments for any value in Sainsbury's when you use Apple Pay. Set up now to shop without taking your wallet with you*.

The question now is, will cashiers have had the briefing about this too or will there be confusion at the tills still?

I've been in the middle of nowhere this weekend on the Isle of Skye. Literally a little coffee shop on top of a hill and I paid with my phone. But if I pop to my local Argos I have to get my wallet out!

The argos by my house hasn't even bothered with contactless

It seems stupid when data seems to suggest people buy more using contactless. Probably applies less to Argos given much of their revenue is from pre-planned purchases but H&B would likely attract more custom.

I just ask if they "do" contactless… I don't bother to ask about Apple Pay, the blank looks and confusion isn't worth the hassle.
In my experience contactless = Apple Pay accepted. :)

Exactly! It's ridiculous. Holland & Barret is another hold out too.

They'd definitely have to lift the £30 limit though… we always seem to spend a bloody fortune at Holland & Barrett.

I think Sainsbury's hasn't had the limit since day one but it's good that they are now advertising this as majority of people won't know about it. Never had a problem at my local store and the staff don't bat an eyelid. Don't know whether that's because the know about it or don't care. Probably the latter!

I never ask about Apple Pay or their contactless limit, I just say I want to pay by card, if it still states to present when the transaction is over £30 then I just use Apple Pay as normal.

Forgive my ignorance but who increases the limit? Is it retailers/shops themselves or the banks? Or both?

The retailers for the most part.

If you can add your bank card to Apple Pay then your bank is already set up for >£30.

And not a case of ignorance, I personally think it is a lack of clarity from banks, retailers and Apple. It should be: if there's an Apple Pay sticker on the door they support >£30!

I'm not even sure if it's a case of the actual retailer blocking transactions over £30, just that it requires their terminals to be updated to a certain firmware level and the bigger the retailer the longer that will take due to the number of terminals they have.

I do the same though say contactless rather than card. When Apple Pay first launched I would ask to pay with Apple Pay and that just led to me having to try and explain what on earth I meant.

As Lewis says it's mainly the retailers and I think this partly explains why we see limitless contactless being adopted at independents quicker than large chains.

Independent retailers often have standalone payment terminals which can be updated or replaced with relative ease. Supermarkets, for example, will integrate the payment terminals with their own POS system so when they want to start taking limitless payments it probably requires a software update to the whole system.

Cashiers at Sainsbury's have to press a button to allow card payments, however all card payments are available once this button has been pressed (including contactless and £30 plus sales). The only way it won't work is if the cashier isn't expecting a card payment, or for whatever reason card payments are down. Strangely cash, card, and gift cards all require the cashier to press different buttons, it would be better and more efficient if card and gift card payment option automatically came up as a possibility for the customer once the transaction has been finalised.

Used Apple Pay on the web for the first time today. Company called Gymshark. I was amazed at how I placed an order in seconds with a company I didn't have an account with. No entering shipping details, contact details or card details.
