I can't find the post on here, but sadly verified that waitrose have put back their Apple Pay limit I presume to £30. Presented my watch for my family shopping today (£150+) for the card reader to just say swipe or insert your card. I tried the watch in any case but it wasn't having any of it.. Back to chip &PIN again Meh :-(

That's a shame... Given that Apple Pay is much more secure than contactless (as it uses biometrics to authenticate the transaction) you'd have thought more retailers would allow transactions >£30 for Apple Pay.

Had a conversation with a customer where I work late this afternoon... Like me she was annoyed more places in Ashbourne (Derbyshire) didn't have contactless/Apple Pay.

Waitrose on Twitter said its been temporarily suspended but is expected back at some point - for "internal reasons"... Odd..

Bloody Tesco! Using a self serve, tried using Apple Pay. Failed. Tried again, failed. Gave up and used my card.

Checked my bank and I now have 3 pending transactions. Grrrr.

I had a similar problem recently at a Marks and Spencer's self service terminal in that it I got the tick mark on the phone indicating that it have successfully processed the transaction but nothing appeared on the payment terminal. I tried again and the same thing happened so in the end I tapped my contactless debit card and it worked. At least for me the two failed transactions were not passed on to my bank.

Mine sorted itself out eventually. I had 3 identical pending charges for about a week, while a C&P charge cleared in a day or so. First time its done this. The 3 pending charges just disappeared. It was only a small charge so not a huge deal.

Maybe this is why the £30 limit is still there. 3 identical pending charges for my monthly food shop is certainly a lot worse than 3 pending charges for my lunch.

One thing I noticed is that the time to authorise a transaction can vary considerably. Most of the time it is no more then a few seconds but in the cafeteria where I work it often takes a round a minute to authorise the transaction on the card reader. A contactless card is always instantaneous as I believe the authentication process is done entirely done offline unlike apple pay.

It's funny you should mention this. I find some stores are quicker than others. Just been to my local Co-Op and Apple Pay on my Halifax Visa Debit was much quicker than my Santander 123 MasterCard.

I think on TfL the Apple Watch is quicker at the gates than the iPhone.

Had my first issue using ApplePay in M&S, just couldn't get it to work. Had to use my contactless card. Lucky I had it with me as I normally leave my wallet at work when I go out on lunch.

Worked fine in Boots and Tesco though.

I've had that problem before in my local Co-Op. Just refused to work full stop.

Very odd! Having said that at least Waitrose have Apple Pay *cough* Asda/Sainsbury's *cough*

What's worse is Sainsbury's have the contactless terminals!! Still annoyed Starbucks removed theirs, to try and get people using their Rewards card...

I would think that debit card transactions are quicker than credit card transactions, just for reasons.

The annoying thing about the Tube and using my Apple Watch, is that the contactless is on the right and my watch is on the left, so it gets awkward :( First world problems.

The co-op near me has 5 tills, 1 has a terminal that doesn't work with Apple Pay or some contactless cards, despite them all being the same ones.

I do find if I pre-authorise my iPhone ahead of holding it near the reader it's faster at Boots, the Co-Op and Morrison's.

That makes sense, as authorise takes a second or 2, then the NFC gets enabled once done.

I'm left handed and wear my Watch on my right wrist as I find it easier for payments on it.

My local Asda also have contactless capable terminals despite them refusing to enable it.

Yep, I've found exactly the same thing. Apple pay will never though be as fast as contactless as the terminal always has to go online to authenticate the transaction where as most contactless cards work offline.

That is not true. Apple pay works without an issue at offline terminals.

How does the terminal validate the card number and cryptogram if the terminal is offline? I pretty sure that the merchants terminal requires a connection to the payment network and this can sometimes introduce a delay.

The Apple Pay Device ID's are issued by Visa/Mastercard/AMEX, so they are actually normal credit card numbers. The terminal already recognises these numbers as they are stored in the internal database of the terminal which is updated on a regular basis when the terminal goes online. A transaction can be processed off-line where the terminal does not dial out for an authorisation, this may happen, for example, if the transaction value is below the floor limit (30 £), as agreed by an acquirer, for which a merchant can accept a transaction.

Finally found a Tesco nearby that had new contactless readers! It was a small Tesco express but still. Worked like a charm. Now introduce limitless Apple Pay in all stores already! ;)

I really wish Tesco would! I've been doing my food shopping at my local Tesco Metro recently because it has Apple Pay support.
