I always feel weird for trying to use Apple Pay in a shop. I'm scared it won't work on me lol, even though they have contactless. I think it's after the amount of times I've shoved my contactless card at the reader and nothing happened.

Definitely going to use Apple Pay tomorrow to buy my railpass, since I know it works there because they've advertised about it a lot :D

Don't worry about it, as long as they have contactless logos up it works. The only time it hasn't worked for me was on my watch at Greggs, same thing every time, the reader says "Try one card at a time". Weird. But my iPhone 6s plus has worked 100% with contactless readers and I use it almost everyday! Be a bit braver ;) haha

The worst thing about it is how under-educated some stores are, if they don't see a card they assume your paying cash.

Then when you have your iPhone out and near the reader they don't understand what you doing, until you say 'I'll pay by contactless' then they change the payment option on there screen which then allows me to pay.

I know its a new way of contactless, but still if I say I'm paying by contactless or have my iPhone out in hand they should really be told to ask method of payment or assume its contactless... that's my biggest grudge about it.

Couldn't agree more, I end up pointing at the reader and saying "I'll pay by Contactless" because if I ready my watch by the time they've stopped looking confused and enabled it the watch has timed out.
It's not quite as smooth as it should be.

I can only hope if android bring out an equivalent that also works with standard Contactless readers, it will just help push up the acceptance/normality of it.

I agree as well! it's just frustrating that it took most places 1 day to understand contactless cards, as they see the card and understand that I'll either use chip & pin or contactless.

BUT the second I have my iPhone out ready to go and I've acknowledged the price of what I'm paying, they just don't understand what I'm doing. It's like they think I'm either trying to swap my £700 iPhone for a £3.50 coffee or I'm just giving it to them for free.

The only time its works well is self service checkouts, I don't get a confused error message on the screen when I pay contactless then. If they can program a machine to understand what I'm doing, maybe they should invest in training for there staff.

I find it really annoying and just plain ridiculous that Sainsbury's which is one of the biggest supermarket chains in the UK does not yet offer contact less payments. There are smaller chains and even independent stores that already do. Contact less card payments have already been around for a while so there is no reason for them not to offer contact less as a payment option.

I do a lot of my shopping at Sainsbury's as it's convenient for me especially after work on the way home but every time I shop there I either have to use cash or chip and pin. I tend not to carry much cash anymore ever since Apple Pay was introduced and using chip and pin is more hassle and less secure then Apple Pay. The sooner they get with the times the better. If there was a Waitrose or M&S near work I would just go there instead.

Contacted payments to clarify what was mentioned via a users twitter account and i can confirm that Sainsbury's is indeed working on something.
After contacting them myself they have informed that the contactless system they will be trialling is one that is already in use and not a new system.
So this could indeed be Apple Pay option and not their version of CurrentC

Well whenever I've visited Sainsbury's they've always had terminals like the one shown here.

As they are the ones I've used successfully in Tesco Express/Metro all Sainsbury's need to do is update the EPOS and enable the hardware for contactless payments.

I don't know about anyone else but I tend to go out of my way to find shops that take contactless payments if/where possible.

Agreed iGeek. My local Sainsburys has had the upgraded hardware for ages now. It seems to just need to be 'switched on' for contactless.

Went into One Stop earlier. They now have new contactless terminals :) I looked at it and said "Ahh, finally!" and the girl behind the counter said that's exactly what she said!

My local One Stop has been contactless ever since it opened but I haven't used it there-yet.

I find it all entertaining that since Apple Pay came out we've turned into nerdy EPOS spotters - I am as bad :)

I wonder if it's simple economics of scale why the big stores haven't upgraded quickly - unsure at what cost it comes to them to change out the older hardware considering the sheer number of readers they'll have and variety of counters and tills, whereas smaller chain and local shops can implement more easily as there is less hardware to replace, and they tend to hire the readers from the card processors and so get offered the newest models as soon as they are available and can change over more easily.

I would think so. My friend has got a new Apple Pay compatible terminal in his bike shop and there's no way he would have paid any extra to upgrade as he hates technology and hates spending his money even more. :D

I would imagine that's the case too for larger stores.

However both Asda and Sainsbury's have the above terminals so they've no excuse; just upgrade the EPOS software, enable contactless and Bob's your Uncle!

Used Apple Pay again this evening at a different Co-Op (cashier rather than self serve).

Seemed to take a long time to authorise the payment (from my Watch) which is weird as it's usually fast.

Ah well... I guess I need to learn to be more patient, haha!

The longest I've had to authorise a payment is a minute. It normally takes at least a few seconds. I'm guessing this is because the payment token has to be validated online where as most contactless cards are able to authenticate offline.

Could well be. And it was a Sunday evening too. I have to say I am impressed with how quickly it's debited from my bank account; the funds have been "paid" already.

Yeah pal i also don't get this , even my little corner shop is onto the whole contactless option and the only reason he got it was due to the apple pay option , they must be a reason with sainsburys why they haven't updated there stores .

Normally takes around 2 working days for my account to be debited with any contactless payments

Its funny you mention that, the corner shop to me has got one in the last few weeks, the bloke there loves it!

loves seeing people pay contactless by card, then when I walked in and done it with my iPhone and AW he was over the moon!

If a shop accepts contactless I've just started showing them my phone and saying anything now, they've got to learn some way.

Used to ApplePay for the first time in a London bus yesterday. Worked without any issues at all. Used it in the passed on the Tube. Went through really quickly.
