Wait so tethering is no more??? I don't even want to upgrade if that is true ....

The official Tethering (in countries where it was allowed since 3.0) it still works, it's still listed on the Apple page and I write this being tethered.

Don't know about jailbroken phones though.

Just installed it

I've just installed both the iPod Touch 3.1.1 update (from 3.0) Didn't see anything particularly special yet. BUt iTunes 9 looks sweet and the App navigator is awesome.

Backup taking forever since installing 3.1 update .....

My backing up since installing 3.1 is taking forever !

Also quick question as its backing up does any one no if the battery percentage is avaliable in this update as they forgot or there was issues to put it in 3.0 ??

I no its avalibable for Iphone 3gs but is the battery percentage in 3.1 iphone update and working for iphone 3g?

"Remotely lock iPhone with a passcode via MobileMe"

Thats nice. so If you lose your phone but didn't have it passcoded you can push that down and then no one will be able to get into it.

Also I d/l iTunes 9 and its nice. Home sharing is neutered enough where music companies wont get up in arms. Though I can see app developers crying about sharing apps between computers (buying a GPS nav system once and then putting it on many phones).

However I cant seem to get Genius mixes to show up, I get Genius but not Mixes.

Bluetooth A2DP

Well, I've got 3.1 installed on iPhone 3Gs No evidence at all that control with Bluetooth stereo head phone is any different than before the update. Only play and pause on my Sony and no control whatsoever on the Jabra Halo -- just as before with 3.0. Nuts!

Can somebody explain to me, the meaning behind the "Safari seems snappier" thing???

Every time there's a new OS update, somebody always says this.

What does it mean??? I mean, I know what it MEANS (faster, duh...) but is it real or just a joke???

I think that since the upgrades force a restart of the phone, any residual memory leaks or runaway processes are restarted as well. This would lead to better battery life and snappier overall performance. People notice this each time and attribute it to the new OS, when it is most likely just because they needed to restart their iPhone.

trying to go from 2.2.1 to 3.1.1 and i keep getting a 404 error. anyone else having trouble? do i need itunes 9 first?

Can someone else verify if they lowered the volume of the speaker?

I'm not updating until i figure this out

So let me get this straight. I paid 10.00 to upgrade from my 2.2.1 OS to the 3.0 OS and I could have waited literally two days and only paid 5.00 to upgrade from 2.2.1 to 3.1? That's BS!

But I intended on Jailbreaking so the point is moot, but it sucks for those who just barely upgraded/bought new iPod Touch's and did the 10 upgrade when they could have gotten it for 5.

You can already do that, as long as they all sync with the same iTunes account logon. It's not clear (to me anyway) if that restriction exists with the home sharing, but I imagine so -- maybe not though.

I would really like to know why it still takes me over an hour to backup my iPhone 3G when I go to update the software. Not that it's a huge deal as it works fine, it just takes forever. Was hoping iTunes 9 was going to fix this (maybe iPhone OS 3.1 will maybe?)

When they released 3.0, it took a very long time the first time you synced; after that it seemed to only do delta updates so syncing went much faster. I suspect it is the same this time.
