Yes for the unibody Macbook, not so much with the White Macbook. No matter how much you try, the white plastic where your palms rest when typing discolor after several months of use, and can't be cleaned. It looks rather nasty.
Working in a huge IT department, which serves 20,000+ users, and has ~ 35% Mac users, all of the white Macbooks are discolored in the palm area. Some are downright gross looking, and I use a USB keyboard/mouse, so I don't have to touch them.

Have you tried a Mr Clean pad?

I think they should rebrand the alu MB as a MBP, and reintroduce the black MacBook at the same price as the white.

I dunno, the worst thing about the black Macbook was it got terribly greasy. The black keys on the current line of Apple's notebooks are bad enough but to have the whole computer including the trackpad get shiny and greasy just takes away the polished look. I saw a guy's black Macbook at the coffee shop last week and it looked like crap.

Anyways the whitebook's update was decent but I think Apple needs to stop being cheap and put in 4GB ram since it's using the cheaper DDR2.

My guess is we should see a bump with the Unibody Macbooks to 2.26GHz and 2.53GHz, obviously hard drive options to 500GB, and that's about all I can think of. Probably will be another quiet update just like the White Macbook was.

I believe that Intel is offering extremely little incentive for anyone to use their 2.26 GHz or their 2.4 GHz processors. To my knowledge, the current line-up which Intel is encouraging (from June 1st) is:

2.13 GHz (P7450)
2.53 GHz (P8700)
2.66 GHz (P8800)
2.8 GHz (P9700/ T9600)
3.06 GHz (T9900)

Apple today quietly bumped the specs on the white MacBook. Changes to the base specs include:

- Processsor speed bumped from 2.0 GHz to 2.13 GHz.
- RAM speed bumped from 667 MHz to 800 MHz.
- Hard drive capacity increased from 120 GB to 160 GB. Build-to-order options up to 500 GB are now available, up from a previous maximum of 320 GB. Notably, the aluminum MacBook continues to offer a maximum hard drive capacity of 320 GB.

In addition, Apple now advertises battery life of "up to 5 hrs wireless productivity", an increase over the previous advertised battery life of 4.5 hours. Finally, the new MacBook is advertised to meet new Energy Star Version 5.0 requirements and is rated EPEAT Gold, compared to a Silver rating on the previous model.

Base pricing remains at $999.
I think this tells us a lot about possible specs of the next update to the aluminum notebooks. I'm more sure of a 133 MHz CPU bump now. Plus I expect bigger HDD BTO options and maybe bigger HDDs by default.

Interestingly, the updates of the white and aluminum notebooks have alternated, so maybe from this pattern and this post we could see:
Aluminum (October 2008) - White (January 2009) - Aluminum (March 2009) - White (May 2009) - Aluminum (July/August 2009)? - White (November 2009)??

I doubted that at first, but it seems very possible. They're clearly treating the white plastic macbooks differently than the Alu macbooks. And there's already only very slight differences between the MB and MBP
I completely agree.

Big disappointment...

With this update together with back to school promotion launched, I guess there will be NO aluminum macbook update, until promotion ends. That means September.
I think the iMacs were redesigned in August 2007 during the promotion.

So, Apple, here's my proposal:
-rebrand the unibody MBs as MacBook Pros, with Firewire and discrete graphics. Drop the 2.0 from the unibody and have the MBP start at 13" 2.4GHz.
-keep the white MB exactly as it is.
-bring back the black MB, with a 2.4GHz processor and a larger HDD.

I don't think the black should be a premium option, you don't pay more money for a black iphone, why should you pay more for a black macbook, i think the current macbook design can be refined. there are a few niggles that can be fixed to make it more seamless looking (don't know about you, but grime gets into the gap between the display bezel and the hinge)

Like i said before I would also like to see a 15" macbook. something like 2.2-2.4/9400/2-4gigs/160-250gig HDD.

i agree with the killing off the 2.0 unibody however, thermal envelope allowing they might even try to wedge a better GPU into the 13", something like a GT120M with 256megs of RAM, and possibly 320-500 gig HDDs as default (keep SSDs as upgrades) to give it more "value" over the macbook range.

No Firewire, No purchase. Firewire is a must for Target Disk Mode repairs. Any Mac user may need it any time.

Oh great another Wiki up date based on speculation.

Makes sense to me. I updated the wiki article.

Would it have been that difficult to wait for verified info instead of updating the Wiki based on something that is likely? Not to be a pain here but it is questionable usage like this that makes Wikipedia less than it could be. Update it all you want just make sure it is with verified facts and not speculation.

As much as I agree with that, from a marketing standpoint, they would be forced to do the same with the unibody Macbooks.

Good to know, I been following AMD's roadmap far more than Intel in recent months.

I thought the idea was that they were phasing out the white MacBook, and it would be replaced by the aluminum MacBook. Why update it?

The option for a white and black MacBook for each model would be nice.

Doesn't make sense to phase it out in this economy, when academia can afford White Macbooks, but the Unibody models are quite a bit more expensive when they are buying in bulk. Also, for cash-strapped students, $949 is a lot easier to swallow than $1299. That $350 difference would strangle growth for Apple. Doesn't make sense to eliminate it, especially in this economy.

Since there is no such thing as a 2.13GHz P7350 I think it is safe to say that it is verified or at least more correct to say P7450.

Glad to see they're holding onto the White Macbook. It's still a great little machine and looks better than half the junk out on the market today. If only it had the multi-touch trackpad and nicer screen, then I'd really consider it.

I could see the white macbook being just the macbook and introducing the blackbook once again. (except both being available at the same price).

Then only pros would be unibody and all would get a little boost as well. I'm in love with the 13 inch uMB and am crossing my fingers it gets a nice spec bump at WWDC before I buy it. Would be super sweet.

What kills me is that the PC Hunter ads would has the public believing that this Mac does not exist. It boils my blood to know people are going out and wasting $1000 on a PC because they don't think they can get a MacBook for under a grand.

Hate to burst your bubble, but no one really wants a 13 inch computer (outside of the apple niche)

2 GB for OS X? I don't want to page out.

OSX will run fine and perform most tasks without a hitch on 2GB. My BlackBook shipped with 1GB and that was enough for most tasks - I upgraded to run virtual machines and iMovie more easily. 1GB on a Vista machine is virtually unusable, 2GB is somewhat manageable, but 3GB is the minimum to get the same sort of performance that OSX manages on 1GB.

Fair enough. I don't care if they offer your choice of colours - I just want the black plastic back! :D Historically, though, the black has been a premium option. Strangely, the opposite of the iPhone, where white is the premium option. *shrug*

One way or another, though, give me the option of buying a new black MacBook! :D

I disagree. Its a good compromise between portability and screen/keyboard real-estate. I have tried smaller machines and while its possible to use them occasionally, I can't use something like a netbook as my main computer whereas my MacBook can be.
The 12.1" dv2 is about as small as I'll go. I really want to see AMD push the affordable, light notebook. A netbook just isn't enough.

Just the opposite has been implied by Apple.

I thought the idea was that they were phasing out the white MacBook, and it would be replaced by the aluminum MacBook. Why update it?
Apple has never indicated that they are phasing out the plasic machine. If nothing else they have indicated that it will be around for awhile. You are not the only one here that has indicated that they thought that the Aluminum MB was a replacement for the plastic but Apple has never said anything that supports that thought.

As to the update, think about it and the timing here. Clearly this machine is targeting the back to school crowd. Many companies would try to dump old stock for such a promotion. Here Apple readies a very nice update for the sale. It is likely why Apples Back To School prmotion is so successful. Depending on the iPod you take with the package you are getting a lot of value for your money. Especially if one goes for a Touch which can work with the MB to make a students life a lot nicer.

Dave

That depends on what value you place on excellent engineering, longevity of hardware, good sell-on fees, intuitive OS, etc. All qualities Apple is renowned for. :) That said, I'll not buy any laptop with glossy screens - no reflection on the product, only a personal preference.

Eh, longevity of hardware? The plastic MacBook? And the intuitiveness of the OS is a personal matter, not an absolute.
