Chuckle

I find it amusing that this turned out to be the unidentified mobile computing device. Apple is fun to watch, since they can be so difficult to predict what they'll do. Sometimes they astound and amaze, other times, they disappoint and bewilder. Keeping us on our toes, I suppose.

Ahem, you're not wasting $1,000 if you specifically want a PC. There is much more value in the Windows world.

And I know you're going to bring up the "it still uses Windows" argument, but with Windows 7 coming out your point is moot. This MacBook I own is looking more lame each and every day. Good thing these have great resell value.

His point isn't moot if even after Windows 7 comes out he still wants to use OS X. His point wasn't moot when Vista came out, and neither was it when XP came out.

And the laptop you posted is 2 pounds heavier with a larger screen. Not always a good thing to everyone, especially if they're looking for portability.

Stop trolling the forum. I love it when people here post the cheap bargains on Newegg. See guys!! See how cheap you can get a Windows laptop!! Wow!!

How's the service? Have you dealt with the company when there's an issue? Is it as good as Apple's?

I hate that argument, because in reality, you never know what you're getting hardware-wise. Some people run flawlessly for years and years, and others with the same exact hardware are boggled with issues. You never really know what you are getting, it doesn't matter if it is Windows-based or an Apple product.

I'm not knocking all PCs, there's some decent PC gear out there (FWIW, I'm looking to buy one later) & you'll get a few duds even with Macs, but it's the only serious argument when buying Macs. Google & you'll find 1000s of people attesting to having similar high levels of customer satisfaction for said reasons.

I disagree with your latter point. I think once you've used Macs, you know very well what you're going to get: reliability & top-notch products.

My late 06 is just showing signs of wear. Smooth spots on the palm rests/trackpad. I luckily never had the yellowing.
The shiny trackpad is common regardless of manufacturer. I remember how pristine my replacement upper case was compared to my nearly 1 year old original.

This is a much better bang for the buck:

After rebate, it's the same price as the Unibody Macbook, and you're getting a Quad-Core laptop CPU, 4GB ram (upgradable to 8GB for $300), ATI 4650 GPU with 1GB of dedicated video ram, and a 500GB hard drive.

Yeah, and it's huge. Again, not the same target audience as a MacBook.

This is much more comparable, and actually has better specs than the MB for $100 more:

But I still question Asus's support, having dealt with it in the past for motherboards. But that's my opinion.

Just browsing the $750-$1000 13" laptops at newegg shows that the MacBook is maybe $100 more for a similar spec. The only real lacking area compared to the Toshibas and Sonys is the RAM/HD. Most of the them have moved to 250/320GB disks and 4GB RAM.

If Apple would offer the plastic MB with the same specs, in black, I would have a hard time not buying one. I presently have the original BlackBook, and would love to upgrade to the new plastic one, but for some silly reason I cannot bare to go from the black to the white. The black looks sooooo nice. And I bought all my accessories to match!

So, Apple, here's my proposal:
-rebrand the unibody MBs as MacBook Pros, with Firewire and discrete graphics. Drop the 2.0 from the unibody and have the MBP start at 13" 2.4GHz.
-keep the white MB exactly as it is.
-bring back the black MB, with a 2.4GHz processor and a larger HDD.

I agree if the software and support wasn't enough... i think i'd pay the extra just for the design. I don't think you can beat the look at the moment.

Yes for the unibody Macbook, not so much with the White Macbook. No matter how much you try, the white plastic where your palms rest when typing discolor after several months of use, and can't be cleaned. It looks rather nasty.
Working in a huge IT department, which serves 20,000+ users, and has ~ 35% Mac users, all of the white Macbooks are discolored in the palm area. Some are downright gross looking, and I use a USB keyboard/mouse, so I don't have to touch them.

But don't forget, those systems run Windows Vista. 2GB of RAM is more than enough for OSX - not so true for Vista. 3GB is the minimum RAM you want with Vista. Specs only tell part of the story. :)

Big disappointment...

With this update together with back to school promotion launched, I guess there will be NO aluminum macbook update, until promotion ends. That means September.

It's strange to say this but the Whitebook 9400M G is actually competitive in the 13.3" arena among other laptops.

You're just going to juggle a few ports, battery life, and ounces around the models and manufacturers.

That might be why it's the only Mac I recommend.

2 GB for OS X? I don't want to page out.

My guess is we should see a bump with the Unibody Macbooks to 2.26GHz and 2.53GHz, obviously hard drive options to 500GB, and that's about all I can think of. Probably will be another quiet update just like the White Macbook was.

Doubtful, you can't have the more expensive product with lesser features. I would hedge my bets on a slight bump within the next 3-4 weeks on the Unibody Macbooks. 2.0GHz -> 2.13GHz (or 2.26GHz), and 2.4 GHz -> 2.53GHz. Hard drive options must include a 500GB hard drive.

I'd like to think OSX/Apple Support is worth the $200.00-$300.00 premium

Wish Apple would stand behind their products with a 2 or 3 year warranty included in the price. Until it does, I certainly wouldn't include Apple Support in the price premium. OS X is worth a $100 premium however, and if you aren't unlucky, you'll get 4 or 5 years use, which is a lot longer than you'll get from a HP laptop!

That's a good point that I never thought.:)

Can't read for content.

I'm confused as to why they have not switched to aluminum for the $999 macbooks

It has already been mentioned several times in this thread that the Aluminum machines are relatively expensive to produce. Each chassis on the UMB is CNC'ed out of a block of Aluminum. It is an expensive process.

It is up to the purchaser to decide if that expense is worthwhile. In the case of the Mac Book it looks like Apple is apparently getting good sales on the plastic model to students and thus want the machine to appear to be attractive for back to school.

I see two elements that are likely making the plastic MB popular. One is the low cost. The other is Firewire. Taken together the value of the package is compelling.

4GB is about $50 these days, and a 320GB 7.2K drive is only $100. So even at a roughly $250 premium, I'd say OS X+iLife is still very much worth the premium. For me, anyway.

I doubted that at first, but it seems very possible. They're clearly treating the white plastic macbooks differently than the Alu macbooks. And there's already only very slight differences between the MB and MBP

I'd say there are significant differences – firewire, express card, better graphics, different screen and speakers.

That's a possibility. Would make sense too to have the Black and White polycarbonate models as just "MacBooks" at $999 with 2.13 GHz.

When there was a black Macbook, it was $200 more than the whitebook.
