MS didn't invent the iPhone or the iPad but they sure as hell made a nice device in the Surface Pro and correctly loaded a desktop class OS into it making it an awesome machine. The iPad Pro with MacOS would kill...but Apple continue to push iOS to the masses because we can't be trusted. The iPad Pro specs are wasted on iOS.

We bought a Surface Pro 4 for work. We use it as a tablet based oscilloscope. For that it works absolutely fantastic. Other than this specific use case, it's nothing special. Tablet Apps are terrible and not properly optimized for touch. With a keyboard it makes a nice laptop, but why would I buy it over a "regular" laptop?

Jack of all trades, master of none.

Apple's main goal is to get iOS into as many consumer's hands as possible. They have so much control over iOS compared to MacOS that they want to do everything in their power to eventually phase out MacOS.

While many of us on this message board are power users to some extent, there is an ever growing amount of people who use their iPhone and iPads for almost everything. They are easier to use, very hard to mess up (besides the infamous 1979 bug a few months ago), and even those with little technical knowledge can use iOS very easily and proficiently. I personally detest iOS; it's lack of any customization and Apple lockdown on programs that can be run on it is counter to why I actually use a "Real" computer. I don't want to have to go through Apple to tell me what I can and can't download. I despise using iOS (or Android) to browse the web because it is a terrible experience compared to using a real computer with a real browser. I don't want an app for every webpage I visit so I can have a decent experience full of ads I can't block.

That's another reason why Apple wants this to work. CNN, Fox News, YouTube, etc. all want us to use their apps when we use their sites because it is nearly impossible to block advertisements in an app. These sites and Apple want the control back that companies had in the radio and television years from the 50's to the late 90's.

I usually don't rant, but this commercial is just another reason to believe that in just a decade (or less) from now, there will be only one Mac operating system and it will be based much more on the tied down iOS than Mac OS. The sad thing is that most people won't care. They will be happy it's so easy to use and simple and won't care that Apple controls everything they can download and use. Ugh...

Basically you're saying a computer revolution is on the horizon. Add that to the political one already underway. Keep talking as it's always a few wise heads that wake enough people up to figure out what is REALLY going on. Computing and American governance have been on dangerous paths with regards to liberty and freedom. I personally see a strong correlation between the issues and trends of both. Both need major corrections.

Well, guess I'll save my shekels for the next few months and buy a refurb MacBook Pro, 2014 Mac Mini ( full load) and a 27" iMac. Should do me for 10 years. By that time I think that Cook & Co will be no more. (despite what many say as how much money Apple has). Ive is now 49 and Schiller is 56. I believe their passion is now on their stock they own and can live on. There is no longer anyone to keep the fire in their belly.

Good post. Check out Cory Doctorow's War on General Computing. If you want liberty and freedom as a digital citizen you shouldn't be using macOS or Windows. Use a Linux distro like Trisquel if you are really paranoid about this stuff.

Or you could just not give a damn and carry on being productive using proprietary, freedom-hating software ;)

There's a big difference between using Wordpress (a fully baked CMS) to using a CSS framework like Bootstrap or Foundation as part of your front-end stack

Do you also rubbish Laravel, Symphony, AngularJS etc?

Tell me you don't reinvent the wheel on every dev project you do ;)
I rewrite things in order to work around software incompatibilities/technical limitations presented by third parties. Which is the whole point of the software I'm providing so... yes, I reinvent the wheel a lot unfortunately

A keyboard that gets out of the way... A screeen you can touch and even write on. Hmm, I cant think of any real computer that can do that

Welcome to 2012.
Not all computers can run Logic pro. The iPad is one that cannot.

The ability to run Logic Pro is not a necessary condition for categorization as a computer.

And among the pretty large group of computers that cannot run Logic Pro, the iPad is unique in that it will likely be able to run Logic Pro in the not too distant future.

The minimum system requirements for Logic Pro X,which include OSX 10.10, allow for the use of all fairly current Macs. But it really depends on what you want to accomplish with Logic Pro X. A MacBook Air could work fine for you or at the other end, even using a twelve-core Mac Pro might require one or two slave computers via VE Pro 5.

But I do agree that Logic will eventually end up on the iPad Pro. But not soon.

Posted using an iPad Air.

Apple today debuted a new iPad Pro advertisement on its YouTube channel, pointing out all of the things the powerful tablet can do as a computer replacement.

The 30 second spot features the iPad Pro and its accessories, the Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard. It features a demonstration of the Apple Pencil being used on the screen and it shows off a few iPad-specific multitasking features including Slide Over multitasking and picture-in-picture.

Apple ends the ad with the tagline "Imagine what your computer could do if your computer was an iPad Pro," positioning the powerful tablet as a viable PC replacement. Today's new video is the first iPad Pro ad Apple has released since its "A Great Big Universe" spot that debuted following the announcement of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

As of March 2016, Apple sells two iPad Pro models, available in 9.7 and 12.9-inch sizes. Pricing for the 9.7-inch model starts at $599 while pricing for the 12.9-inch model starts at $799. The high selling price of the iPad Pro led Apple to see its first iPad revenue growth in 10 quarters during the third quarter of 2016.

Ouch. I guess the mac mini is no longer going to be supported, the Mac Pro will fall to the wayside and about the only desktop they will have is an iMac....sad to see them leaving the computer scene as we know it.

You know what? Let them promote iPads as a computer for the masses. Then make macOS the computer for the power users who need terminal, file systems, GPUs, multi-monitor, and professional applications. Then they can refocus their Mac line on professional users. That is where the desktop computer is heading into the future. The content producers are the users who need laptops and desktops. The needs of Grandpa Joe is better handled by an iOS device.

That is my impression of the Surface. My son has one, people at work have them, I have used them. If you really want to just have one device, they are a reasonably good laptop, but a pretty poor tablet for what I use a tablet for. For me a surface is no better at replacing an iPad, than an iPad is at replacing a desktop. I'd prefer to use the tool best suited to what I am doing. If that means owning multiple devices, I'm ok with that.

I might add a big pro pad to my workflow next year. Marking up documents with a pencil could be nice. The iOS simplicity could be a nice thing as well. And it would be so light to carry around, while having a pretty big screen.

Apple pays out Windows laptops with touch sensitive screens because you have to lift your finger to the screen (which I agree is ridiculous), then they try and sell the same thing! Give me bluetooth mouse support and trackpad on the keyboard; then I might consider the iPad Pro replacing my holiday laptop.

it can do this

I really don't understand the issue. It's for a quick charge when you are out in case pen dies. Would you prefer to carry around a charger?

The problem with my Mac is that it's old as dirt, wiseguy. I know how to run my own diagnostics, thank you very much.

Well then there you go. You originally implied that new Macs can't possibly run all those applications as they haven't been updated, which is completely incorrect. They'll run them like butter.

You're then implying that your current Mac running like rubbish is somehow a fault of the new Macs not being updated. Ridiculous.

And now it transpires your Mac is old as dirt, which is why you're complaining in the first place??!

If you've been trying to make a point, you've completely lost touch. Follow the thread and you'd understand my confusion. Just sounds like you're moaning in the most ambiguous way and then jumping through another hoop when actually questioned to clarify your baseless rhetoric.

Based on the usage of most consumers who just do some email and web surfing the iPad makes a good computer. But if you do anything creative it's just a headache. The software just isn't good enough.

To me the iPad is a consumption device that can in a pinch do some content creation. Where as I see a proper laptop or desktop running OS X (or Windows) as a proper computer that can do everything, consumption and creation with ease across all disciplines.

This ad to me is just frustrating when the Mac platform is languishing. New central and graphics processors come and go and they're still selling the old stuff. It wouldn't be so bad if we could get OS X from other hardware manufacturers but with Apple not allowing that they have a duty to their customers who've invested in the OS X platform to continually update the machines available.

Instead they're focusing on this iOS stuff which I don't have a major problem with but I don't want them to put so much into iOS that the Mac business suffers. I hoped when they unveiled the new Mac Pro in 2013 we'd finally see it get updated. Almost three years have gone by and no updates, why would I buy it? I can get latest processors, graphics etc from a system from someone else like even Dell.. long gone are the times of Apple selling the fastest personal computer on the planet or even a mid-range in performance standalone desktop.

I think right now only three Macs even come with dedicated GPU's, the highest end 15" MacBook Pro, the high end iMac and the Mac Pro. What kind of joke is this for the amount of money they're charging? The Intel graphics suck, just plain crap but they're charging thousands for these systems.

blegh /rant off.

Wait until you go freelance or independent away from your job. You'll want an iMac for home studio use or laptop for mobility. iPad Pro is useful in certain ways for conceptualization with the Pencil BUT for high resolution or print based work, a desktop computer is the best way to go. I have'nt gotten an iPad Pro or Surface Pro 4 yet, but I'm leaning towards the latter because I do illustration work digitally and work with layers in high res on Manga Studio, Photoshop or Illustrator. The Surface Pro will handle the file sizes perfectly with layers intact. iPad Pro? Doubtful.
I don't plan on going freelance or independent anytime soon as I make a good living doing what I do. Of course desktop is the best way to go for creative work. But for everything else. I'm on iPad. All my editing of photos happens on iPad now since 2013. iCloud Photo Library made it even better.
