This is false, Apps don't have to be programmed in a way to support multitasking.

That's a broken "argument"

Um, yes they do. Apple's own documentation says they do.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202070

The three methods of Multitasking on an iPad is Slide Over, Split View, and Picture in Picture. All three require app support, and many still do not support any of these.

Switching between apps with gestures IS NOT multitasking.

I don't get the appeal.

You can use your laptop on your lap. Only people who have specific needs get a desktop. And the iPad Pro as a "computer" (I guess Apple means it's a computer when used with keyboard) is a desktop.

Why would I want a computer I have to set on a desk over one I can put on my lap? Apple has already said that using touch on a laptop is a terrible experience. Isn't that what you do when it's on the keyboard? So you have the terrible experience of holding your hand out horizontally plus the horrible experience of no trackpad or good keyboard.

The SurfaceBook I can see the appeal of.

I have an iPad 2 that I use every single day - no, this isn't convincing me to buy an iPad Pro.

You probably missed the part where I wrote, "for those that haven't been paying attention." Since you're commenting in a MacRumors forum, I would guess you've been paying attention to the iPad line.

What do you use your iPad 2 for? That's what I was using before I got the 9.7in Pro.

I really don't understand the issue. It's for a quick charge when you are out in case pen dies. Would you prefer to carry around a charger?

They could've engineered it more elegantly... like if the pen was tucked in on the side (like the Samsung Note series).

But no, they just ended up designing something that literally looks like the iPad is taking a dump shaped like a pencil.

Not to mention the fact that the pencil could snap at any point if one isn't careful

The iPad doesn't?

I love my iPad Pro, truly love it. As an iPad. As a laptop replacement, specifically as it relates to multitasking? No, it does not do "true" multitasking.

Take my work for example. I watch hundreds of submission tapes for a comedy festival, rate them all, and narrow that down to our selection for the festival. This requires me to quickly toggle between Mail to sort through the submissions, Excel to keep a ranking of the submissions, Notes for any follow up that needs to be done on that day's work, and a Safari tab (or YouTube in the iPad's case) to watch the videos. There is simply no way to do this all at once on an iPad, and honestly I cannot imagine a scenario where I would prefer that particular user interface for this type of work. Its not even a spec limitation of the iPad, but a fundamental limitation of the UX that prevents me from doing the work I need to do on it.

Not saying an iPad Pro can't multitask, or can't be used for "real" work, but for lots of folks (myself included) it simply is not a viable replacement for OS X.

Edited to add that going in to my work this season, I had sold off my old iMac and was thoroughly convinced I could get by just fine with only an iPad and an iPhone. And for a few months I did. But as soon as this work kicked in, I had to go buy a new MacBook Pro, even though I was trying to hold out for a refresh. As much as I would love to just use an iPad, some things cannot be done with it alone.

As some other commenters have pointed out--though as little as Apple seems to care about the Mac when compared to its iOS devices, I cannot imagine all the employees of Apple--the most valuable company in the world by market cap.--running around on iPads exclusively. Small, 12.9" (or less) screens used for OS development, for hours of video editing, and for hours photo editing every day? Without even a mouse or trackpad? I don't think so. The days that Apple stops making Macs is the day that Apple stops using Macs. And I can't imagine a world where Apple switches to Windows machines or iPads for all of their work.

But, crazier things have happened.

This ad is just, I don't know, depressing when I think about how Apple is dumbing things down. I mean, yes, I get that some people can use an iPad as there main computer, but for Pete's sake! I can't even have two (just two) Word docs open at the same time! Never mind how slower selecting, copying and pasting text is on a touch screen compared to using a mouse or trackpad. And of course, there are a whole host of things that other people have mentioned on this topic that an iPad can't begin to do that a Mac can! Sigh. Apple. So much money in the bank and yet I have so little faith in the future of the company.

There's a big difference between using Wordpress (a fully baked CMS) to using a CSS framework like Bootstrap or Foundation as part of your front-end stack

Do you also rubbish Laravel, Symphony, AngularJS etc?

Tell me you don't reinvent the wheel on every dev project you do ;)

Also: Apple's Planet of The Apps site is built with Bootstrap.

Really? Then, tell me why didn't Apple think of including the Lighting docks with the Pencil instead of this idea of popping the stylus into the iPad? That was bad industrial design thinking right there. Or they could have had the Pencil be magnetically attached to the iPad and be charged that way as if it was on a magnetic strip, similar to how gamers would put the controllers on a charging pad. I remember Nintendo had a third party charging pad for the Wii controllers and it worked with a proprietary battery in it.
It is included.

tipping everyone that the new macbook line will be touch and can remove the keyboard, oh wait it also runs windows... :)

almost as good as my Surface 4, no hate, I'm getting an iPad Pro for dad but that's cause he's retired and doesn't need to do real work. It is easier to use I give it that.

Yes...it's not the hate for ipp....it's definitely the direction of where Apple is heading. Lack of mac updates...especially mac pros. I love ipp...but it's just an entertainment product...and productivity tool as well.
If i had to use ipad pro for rending videos...it would look like this....

But I thought you could do 3 streams of 4K on the ipp?

Want to have an iPhone Plus/Pro with 4:3 display with 8 GB RAM/512 GB SSD. Connected to a Monitor, Keyboard and Trackpad (or a mobile 13" Dock) it must become a macOS device.

Indeed. The pricing on the newer Surfaces Pro is a bit mad, let alone the Surface Book, but the concept is correct and it is very much a computer.

This ad stops conveniently short of telling us what else it can do, and also doesn't mention the so many things it can't. It does indeed make you wonder what else it can do.
The surface pro looks nice. But if you look closely, people use them as laptops not tablets. Most people find it tiring that they have to touch the screen once you give them a keyboard and touchpad. As illustrated by the ipp.

So I would say the concept is not really sound, but the form factor is nice.

Good post. Check out Cory Doctorow's War on General Computing. If you want liberty and freedom as a digital citizen you shouldn't be using macOS or Windows. Use a Linux distro like Trisquel if you are really paranoid about this stuff.

Or you could just not give a damn and carry on being productive using proprietary, freedom-hating software ;)

Thanks for sharing that link http://boingboing.net/2012/08/23/civilwar.html
It's a very interesting piece that should be widely read.

I guess this really does signal the end of the Mac Pro. I am a photographer and a video editor... I use FCP X.. but it looks like I will be switching to Adobe LightRoom/PhotoShop/Premiere on a Windows 10 machine running dual GTX 1080 cards... I can't count on Apple to take pro COMPUTERS seriously anymore.

So where is the Finder on this "computer"? How do I locate and organize all my files? How do I even download files off the internet? ....Oh right...
Swipe to the left most screen. I believe you can now download files to iCloud Drive with iOS 10

This is where I have been saying that Apple is headed for about a year now. Unfortunately, I think this is only good for about 70-80% of the population. The light users and some middle weight users. But for serious or professional grade users, the iPad cant do enough. Maybe in a couple of years, when they finish the merging of macOS into iOS -- like a directory/file structure and multi-running windows.
So its good for the majority that has the most buying power due to their quantity and doesnt really know tech stuff. Which is probably the target demographic of this ad.

This is actually one of the first iPad videos Apple has published in a long time. Interesting it's six weeks away from the Key Note.
