The iPhone launch will be very interesting...they will need to launch several products to capture market share and festive season shoppers. If they only release a new iPhone which is not too different to the current phone with nothing else it will be a very sad close of 2016 for this Apple customer.

My guess is we will not see a refreshed iPad Pro line up, at least not until the Spring 2017 Keynote, which would put the iPad Pro 12.9 almost at the 18 month mark and the 9.7 Pro would be at its one year anniversary.

If anything at the Keynote six weeks from now, we will see the iPhone 7, Apple Watch 2 and possibly a Mac update.

That's it. I'm done with this company. We want a great smartphone, instead they give us an iPhone that's thinner instead of thicker and heavier with a huge battery. We want widgets and other cool Android features, instead they give us 3D Touch. I dare anyone here to tell us why 3D Touch is a useful innovation. I mean, supposedly rivals slavishly copy everything Apple does, yet we haven't seen anyone ripoff 3D Touch. That's telling. Instead of focusing on OLEDs, they focus on stupid input method. Why would anyone want UI to be pressure sensitive?

I would never would have imagined that Apple would neglect the Mac so they can peddle the stupid Apple Watch, plus bands. I don't need to track my health because I don't care. Nobody cares, Apple. Nobody. It's in fact pretentious to think that you can take technology and cobble it together into some personal device that would give individuals more attention over their own health. But the Apple Watch is doomed. Sales are embarrassing. The only people I've seen wearing these stupid watches have been really weird-looking people. So it's over. Good riddance.

But this iPad thing. I will never ever change my opinion. Just like how I thought the iPod was stupid, and was eventually proven right since Apple stopped making them. Ever since 2010, my feeling was that it's just a big iPod touch that does nothing useful and today, it is still a big iPod touch that does nothing useful. Even the name is stupid. MaxiPad, remember? Instead of killing off the stupid iPad, which is just a big iPod touch, they continue to "innovate" this crap when they should be pouring all of their efforts into real computers: the Mac—which, let's be honest, has barely been a computer ever since Microsoft released the Surface and Windows 8.

I'm afraid to admit it, but have to nonetheless. The Mac is now just a relic. Such a shame. It symbolizes a happier time where REAL computers were for REAL people.

Relax. You will be back for more and will be here to complain about it.

Um, yes they do. Apple's own documentation says they do.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202070

The three methods of Multitasking on an iPad is Slide Over, Split View, and Picture in Picture. All three require app support, and many still do not support any of these.

Switching between apps with gestures IS NOT multitasking.

No, they don't, if you use AutoLayout and storyboards with size classes, like Apple tells you, you don't.

iOS doesn't multitask on the same level as a desktop OS. Try, for example, putting an active SSH session in the background on iOS. iOS kills it after 3 minutes while on any desktop OS it runs indefinitely.

Everything you can do on an iPad you can do on a computer but an iPad cannot do everything a computer can do. No one is going to replace their computer with an iPad unless Apple discontinues laptops and desktops.

For most people, it's enough, SSH wasn't designed for mobile anyway.

We bought a Surface Pro 4 for work. We use it as a tablet based oscilloscope. For that it works absolutely fantastic. Other than this specific use case, it's nothing special. Tablet Apps are terrible and not properly optimized for touch. With a keyboard it makes a nice laptop, but why would I buy it over a "regular" laptop?

Jack of all trades, master of none.

Actually, I would argue its a master at being a Jack of all trades, if that makes any sense. Its kind of hard to explain, but I love using the device and it now gets more use than my rMBP.

I agree that windows tablet apps are terrible, but then I didn't buy the device to use tablet apps. If I did, I would've bought the iPad Pro.

The SP4 can be used for drawing, taking notes, browsing, lounging, and using full work desktop apps. The hinge gives it amazing versatility and is actually easier to use while lounging, while an iPad is limited by the smart cover.

If your only concern is having a tablet or just having laptop, then sure there are better options. However, for what it is, I says its a master at doing what it's aimed to be.

Not necessarily. We just don't know. As was already pointed out, one of the problems with this commercial is that it is extremely poorly timed, given the lack of even rumors of updates to those product lines. Therefore it seems to imply that this is what Apple now considers a proper computer and the direction Apple wishes to focus on, and implies a certain exclusivity to this focus.

I am guessing they only meant for the commercial to highlight that the iPads are real computers, too, in addition to the other computing devices that take on a more traditional form factor.

But it's just not coming across that way. Apple has been very careless with its image lately.

The odd thing is that Apple is not headed up by "youngsters" as one previous post called them. Their CEO is just a little older than I am and their senior executive team falls right around my age. These are people who have been around at the birth of personal computing, so I find it ironic they are working so hard to return us to the concept of dumb terminals. Granted the dumb terminals are now sleek and sexy tablets and phablets, and the mainframe of old has been replaced by this ethereal concept called a cloud. But it's still dumbed down devices tethered to a centralized power.

It was my generation who worked so hard to bring personal computing to the masses and apparently it's my generation who wants to roll back the concept. I'm so disappointed.

They by now should know who their loyal customers are and what our needs are. It's fine to anticipate our needs and expand in new directions. I sincerely do love my Apple Watch, my iPad mini and my iPhones. But Apple execs need to recognize they can grow these new aspects on the solid foundation of the personal computer. That is the center of the Apple Ecosystem for too many people and families and it just works. They're destroying it and trying too hard to make their new products into something they aren't. Or at least their ad makes it seem that way.

Out of curiousity, which model of the Pro do you own, 9.7 or 12.9? Also, do you also own the Surface Pro 4? Or have you only used the Surface Pro?

when they said that iOS will merge into bigger OS X, i didn't expect it to be the other way around. This is the end. Macs was the reason i loved this company, no iPhone or iPad can replace the Macs. Bye Apple!

No wonder they don't talk about "real" computers, considering how ancient their lineup is...

In fairness, Intel has been delayed with their processors, which ultimately will hold the Macs from being updated. This has been an ongoing problem for while, sounds like this issue may be resolved. I guess we will find out.

Well then there you go. You originally implied that new Macs can't possibly run all those applications as they haven't been updated, which is completely incorrect. They'll run them like butter.

You're then implying that your current Mac running like rubbish is somehow a fault of the new Macs not being updated. Ridiculous.

And now it transpires your Mac is old as dirt, which is why you're complaining in the first place??!

If you've been trying to make a point, you've completely lost touch. Follow the thread and you'd understand my confusion. Just sounds like you're moaning in the most ambiguous way and then jumping through another hoop when actually questioned to clarify your baseless rhetoric.

Moaning? Baseless rhetoric? Lost touch? I wonder what are you smoking other than your own self righteousness. I'm sorry if english is not your primary language, but your inability to read between the lines isn't anybody else's problem. Fine, I'll elaborate. I haven't "implied" my Mac is rubbish -I said it clearly, it's become a blunt instrument given the requirements of my work.

To add more clarity, I have a 2012 rMBP 15", a 2011 27" iMac, and for both I've been saving to trade up -my typical purchase cadence being 2,5 years. I was even considering a new Mac Pro until I realised it's been sitting in the dirt since its release. I can't get myself to spend a penny on outdated hardware or a crass shiny tablet that's meant to be "a computer". With the exception of the glib new Macbook and marginal updates on the iMac, Apple has effectively released no new machines since 2012.

As for the "new Macs running like butter": my employer has recently provided me with a maxed out 2015 15" rMBP which I set up from scratch. It looks and runs exactly like my 2012 model. How could it not, since the only thing that's changed were hiked I/O speeds and a new trackpad. Far from buttery.

You can take your anxiety elsewhere, friend.

The Surface Pro 4 is by no means the ultimate device but my point was that MS are bold enough to try different things and give consumers choice - it is very easy to use it as a laptop and get lots of work done and then go tablet mode into meetings for note taking and drawing etc. Many enterprise customers will never be able to adapt iOS into their environment and Apple need to get that into their heads like Dell, Lenovo, and MS have!

Doesn't seem to have stopped Dell with their XPS line. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Seems that everyone but Apple has been able to release updated computers quite regularly.

The issue is we don't know the constraints Apple has, do we? I mean, we all want an updated Mac, but No one here can ultimately determine the hold up. I wish I knew. It's all speculation until it actually happens unfortunately. Maybe in six weeks we will know at the September Key note.
