Hell, Apple's own iWork suite software is less robust in iOS than in OS ... so accessing and manipulating between devices is NOT possible.

AND if the iPad truly is a stand-alone device then make so I can back-up and Restore from back-up to an external hard drive - why do I have to be dependant on their lousy iCloud?

"What's a computer?" A device that can dual boot Windows and Ubuntu/Linux. What can your iPad Pro dual boot?

What a horrible and misleading ad IMO. Even in car ads when they show a model starting at $X when they show off a much more loaded version puts in a disclaimer of $X as shown.

I hope they make xCode available for Windows. Then my Surface is going to do EVERYTHING! :D
I had a similar thought: Apple may be 'forced' to release XCode for Windows, or Linux, so that people can continue to develop for iOS.
or
Apple could just remove 3ed party apps for iOS ???

Tim just sees the word "Pro" as a way to shake you down for an extra couple of hundred bucks

Well, they succeeded in doing that - I purchased a 9.7" iPP on opening day and am pretty happy with it with some exceptions, as I've stated in an earlier comment.

Question is, would you have bought the same device if it had been called the iPad SE?
Did the Pro moniker make any difference to the sale - apart from the inflated price?

I'm all for calling this a tablet computer. Any smart phone is a computer.
It's not however a Pro device and iOS is no replacement for a real desktop OS.

I know what it can NOT do, make that commercial.... Maybe the leadership in apple should start asking the designers and engineers internally if they would be satisfied working on an iPad from now on?
The team switch to Premiere Pro run on Windows 7 last year, the problem is that no one has dared to tell Tim, Phil and Jonny yet.

It rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe that is because I am waiting for a Mac upgrade, but that is crap. Very confusing messages being sent across.

They rename OSX to macOS. They add new features like Siri, optimized storage, etc.

But on the other hand they say "Super. Computer.", as well as that is where they "believe the future of the computer" going, and then release this garbage advertisement.

This is getting aggravating and the worst part is, I bought into their ecosystem, so I feel a bit trapped with options unless I spend money to get out of it.
Look at it from the bright side, if they don't care anymore they wouldn't bother renaming it to macOS.

What is a computer?
  • It's something I manage my files and backups on.
  • It's something I can install third party software and multiple operating systems on.
  • It's something I can plug external storage into.
  • It's something I can plug a DVD drive into if the OS crashes and I need to restore it.
  • It's something I can plug a mouse into and play games with.
  • It's something I can run the full Adobe Creative Suite on.
  • It's something I can use typing over 50 keystrokes per minute and receive tactile feedback from the touch.
  • It's something that has actually mastered COPY AND FRIGGING PASTE.
Is an iPad a computer? Is a lamp an orangutang?

• iOS automatically keeps everything backed up (including music and photos if you have the icloud subscriptions)
• Most everyday people dont give a flying f*** about having multiple OS
• Using cloud backup is much more reliable in events of unexpected disasters
• iOS rarely if ever crashes to the point of needing a hard reinstall (I've been using iPads hardcore SINCE DAY 1 almost 7 years ago)
• If you want a mouse for a tablet.....you're using it wrong.
• iPads are not meant to replace hardcore creative work so Adobe CS will never happen anyway
• iPad pro or any iPad can use keyboards ( I have the logitech bluetooth one and its awesome)
• ILL CONCEDE TO COPY AND PASTE.....you win on that one, lol

Moral of the story.....the iPad Pro can do about 90 percent of what 90 percent of people want to do daily.......thats the truth. I use an iMAc and Adobe CS all day at work. But when I come home and want to listen to some tunes, catch up on news, chat with people etc. The iPad has been my go to device FULL TIME ever since the iPad Air came out 3 years ago.

Can you share a file/directory with me using iCloud?

Look, Apple, this is as simple as this:

No iPad will ever truly be a full laptop replacement until it receives its own enhanced version of iOS. For as long as it shares the same iOS and the same Apps as the iphone, the iPad will always be effectively nothing but a glorified iPhone with a large screen.

Dont get me wrong: I love my iPad, but it's somewhat castrated by iOS's encapsulated ecosystem. iOS needs to split into iOS lite (iPhone) and iOS pro (iPad).

The iPad Pro needs a different interface for file management. Then we need some ports along with Final Cut Pro and a full safari browser that is not seen as a mobile browser by sites I want to upload to.

A computer is, outside of Apple's warped reality field, is generally a cheaper and more powerful device that can do a lot more and has no annoying usability issues like lacking a mouse. Computers are actually gaining market share once again in the POST-Tablet market where consumers that once assumed a tablet would be everything they needed have been largely disappointed and realize they need something a little better than a Candy Crush delivery device. Laptop sales outside of Apple's ecosystem have actually increased in the past few years.

BTW a computer is still required to actually make apps for the casual tablet market. And if Apple focused just a little on innovating again with their Mac lineup again, they might actually see an increase in sales of "computers" and not keep assuming that consumers are only interested in $1200 "pro" tablet that doesn't really do anything better then a $500 casual tablet except dock to a keyboard that is crippled without a touchpad. Apple also has made the mistake of thinking a MacBook doesn't need a touch screen for usability reasons, and yet force you to have to use touch exclusively on a docked iPad Pro, which means that Apple has two device divisions that do not seem to realize the other one exists.

In other words, Apple doesn't know what a computer is anymore as they have failed most Mac fans with a complete lack of interest in continuing to promote the Mac computer making some naive assumptions that the iPad has destroyed the computer market, which it did 5+ years ago, but that is no longer a reality.

When the Chromebook has outsold MacBook's, you know that Apple's Mac division has gone off the rails and plunging over the cliff.

Once again Tim Cook is promoting a message that started with Steve Jobs, but has not made an original marketing or product development decision since then.

I agree with you. I love my iPP, I use it everyday, I read on it, I take notes, I PDF stuff, (basic) Excel etc.
But there's always THAT thing that needs to be done on a laptop... it might happen once a day, or once a week, but it's there.
I think the MBA/MBP/iMac+iPP combination is the winner.

What would be the point of that? a Macbook would just be a bigger heavier iPad.
Because they're spending a lot of time and effort dumbing down macOS and apps to play nice with iOS. Why not just go all the way.

Well, what about Adobe Creative Suite, for instance? I work on a 27" Retina screen, use a mouse for precision input and am able to sit a distance from my screen, with my keyboard and mouse within easy reach, sitting in a position that's comfortable to me. I don't want to be hunched over a 12" screen (I've even opted for a 15" MacBook Pro due to its extra screen size over the smaller Apple laptops) that I can't even use on my lap; I don't want to have to type whilst holding an Apple Pencil (picking it up and putting it down on a regular basis wouldn't be condusive to a balanced workflow) and I want a structured OS that doesn't rely on the Cloud and lacks a desktop-style filing system that, as a Mac-based Professional, I've been used to ever since I started using 'a computer'. I'm afraid it can't replace 'MY computer'. And, as some have previously mentioned, if Apple are going to adopt this marketing strategy, and people fall for it, then in the initial we'll be waving goodbye to the MacBook Air and then incrementally, the more useful Macs will start to disappear as time and tech move on. In no way am I convinced that this is a viable proposition and, what's more, if the current lack of Mac updates is in any way close to being a by-product of this thinking, Apple may well have cut their own throat. Here's hoping otherwise...

For now, the iPad will not replace your semi desktop (iMac is a big laptop right? :p ) but the Surface pro is a whole computer in a tablet. That would be my device of choice.

Yes.. Apple, what 'else' can it do... We are all waiting

Gosh. I hope not,... how does one restore on the device itself? Have a iPad Pro go into 'Power wash' mode like the Chromebooks? umm.. actually that's not a bad idea.

Most likely. Apple already dominates the tablet market. They have no reason to keep dumping resources into the MacOS software and Hardware when they already have a huge user base that they can convert over to for enterprise and regular workflows.
