Would be nice if there was a little truth in advertising. Let me help this ad:

People! Don't be tricked by the marketing. It can't run full featured software! It can't even keep a few Safari browser tabs open without reloading them! How annoying (>_<). It's not a computer, it's a tablet with a bad attitude! Sad thing is Apple Stores are attempting to convince new customers this is a computer in their sales pitches. Sad. So sad. This is a content consumption device with some productivity elements that will actually decrease your productivity and increase the amount of time working, from experience using iPad and using Mac.

Smart Keyboard for 12.9-inch iPad Pro
$169.00 US

Chi-ching!

Well, what about Adobe Creative Suite, for instance? I work on a 27" Retina screen, use a mouse for precision input and am able to sit a distance from my screen, with my keyboard and mouse within easy reach, sitting in a position that's comfortable to me. I don't want to be hunched over a 12" screen (I've even opted for a 15" MacBook Pro due to its extra screen size over the smaller Apple laptops) that I can't even use on my lap; I don't want to have to type whilst holding an Apple Pencil (picking it up and putting it down on a regular basis wouldn't be condusive to a balanced workflow) and I want a structured OS that doesn't rely on the Cloud and lacks a desktop-style filing system that, as a Mac-based Professional, I've been used to ever since I started using 'a computer'. I'm afraid it can't replace 'MY computer'. And, as some have previously mentioned, if Apple are going to adopt this marketing strategy, and people fall for it, then in the initial we'll be waving goodbye to the MacBook Air and then incrementally, the more useful Macs will start to disappear as time and tech move on. In no way am I convinced that this is a viable proposition and, what's more, if the current lack of Mac updates is in any way close to being a by-product of this thinking, Apple may well have cut their own throat. Here's hoping otherwise...
Just buy a Mac?

I don't think the Mac will disappear yet because both Apple and 3rd party developers uses it to to work on the OS and to develop apps.

If at one point the Mac disappear some other device or maybe the iPad would have fully replaced it not because it's another form factor but because it's better. The ergonomics would be top notch, can you imagine Apple engineers hunching over while debugging the OS?

Just to make myself clear, I don't think the Mac is going to disappear.

A computer has USBs, internal document storage and far less restrictive. See: Surface Pro.

Pushing iPads as computers seems silly. They're brilliant consumption devices, not workhorses.

Until the iPad runs OSX then it lacks in just about every area when trying to do something productive.

It will happen eventually.

Seems like Apple is trying to stem the sliding sales of the iPad. I'm not sure this ad will do it, but its a nice step to see them try to turn things around.

"Just when you think you know what a computer is, you see a keyboard that can just get out of the way. And a screen you can touch... and even write on. When you see a computer that can do all that, it might just make you wonder hey, what else can it do?"

but noooo.. we refuse to bring touchscreen to Macs..

Apple, we need proper filing system before i ever even consider getting rid my computer

Funny - the surface has been touting his for a few years now - but lots of arguments on here about a touchscreen and stylus being useless/gimmicks or not a good user experience.

Depends on how you define workhorses.

Once I needed to make a 4 X 8 foot sheet of plywood into a 3 X 8 foot sheet.

Unfortunately my saw was gone. And I was short on funds to buy a new saw.

I asked my neighbors if they had a saw I could borrow. Unfortunately they didn't.

As I couldn't put off the project, I worked with what I had. I drew an 8 foot long straight line down the boards with my pencil. And then got out my drill. I proceeded to drill numerous holes along my pencil line until I had essentially cut off the excess wood.

It worked. It came out just fine. And I sanded the edge smooth.

The 7 other nearby neighbors got a bit of entertainment watching me drill 8 feet of board.

In the end, my drill proved to be a workhorse. But a saw would have saved me about an hour.

Being productive with an iPad reminds me of that day when I used a drill to perform the task of a power saw.

I wonder if at this point Apple is gonna start selling OS X for PCs?

The best possible result is probably to have Dells running OSX, because Apple clearly doesnt GAF about macs. The Mac lineup is embarrassingly bad at the moment.

I would love to be able to run OSX on a PC Laptop. They are just better hardware, I just don't like Windows 10.

It's true there is no Xcode.. at least not yet. Does that mean there will never be an XCode? I can see Apple working on something to bring XCode to the iPad.
We're working on it, why wouldn't they? Our app hyperPad brings game development to the iPad. Feature wise, we're pretty comparable to software only available on a desktop (Unity, Gamemaker, construct, stencyl etc.)

So the iPad can most definitely be used for serious development. We have users who have created entire games on the iPad. That means all the artwork, music, sound effects, and the game programming as well.

Can you distribute your finished product straight from iOS? Can you test your app straight on iOS? Basically, can you realistically go through the entire development process without touching macOS, Windows, or Linux?

I have a POC I've worked on. It's purely an HTML 5 thing, but I don't have the time/resources to build it out to be everything I'd want for an iOS IDE.

Hmm.. I've yet to see anyone at Apple use an iPad Pro for work but we'll see if that's changed in a months time.

Good post. Check out Cory Doctorow's War on General Computing. If you want liberty and freedom as a digital citizen you shouldn't be using macOS or Windows. Use a Linux distro like Trisquel if you are really paranoid about this stuff.

Or you could just not give a damn and carry on being productive using proprietary, freedom-hating software ;)

Cory is a palatable RMS, but they both have too much religion for me.

I'm also big enough to admit that they're both generally right

While catching up and reading everything, I eventually had to stop giving thumbs up to all the posts.

It is extremely sad to see Apple lose the feeling for all reality. There must be somebody there who has brains enough to see that this product isn't even close to replace a working computer.

The lines are very clear:

macs, mbp s etc. with macOS for work and tasks.

iOS for consuming content.

Any hybrid has to take the best from both lines.

Dear Apple,

It hurts to say it, but the surface is as far ahead of you as your car is behind everybody.

If the point is having a computer the size of an iPad Pro, then FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, make it work like a computer! Give it a mouse, usable ports, a real computer OS, file handling, etc. You know?...how real people work?

These ad demos showing someone writing on the screen like somehow, that what everyone does when they work, is ridiculous. I see people in offices, at desks, with dual and triple monitors, comfortable keyboards, lots of storage.

I suppose just because some genius can make a website on a Raspberry Pi doesn't prove that everyone, everywhere should which to a Pi to do all their work.

Well, Raspberry Pi is proper computer, so don't compare to iPad :)
It is not very powerful, but you could install different OSes on it, connect almost anything you want and run all kind of software (taking into account weak CPU and amount of RAM)

When a tablet (even an iPad) can connect to one or more external displays to extend the desktop, handle multiple user accounts, allow installing of any software, tinkering and tweaking by admins, connect to a network via ethernet, join a Domain, be re-imaged from a NetRestore server, have a full-size keyboard, contextual popup menus, and allow apps to access a central file storage directory (aka "Documents folder") then it will be a computer. But wait, we already have those. At least right now we do. What are you thinking. Apple?

Can someone can explain to me what you CAN do on an iPad that you CAN'T do on your iPhone?

Is it only the multitasking use of SplitView?
