Most people don't use xCode, most people don't edit 4K video, most people don't use VR or play high end games, most people don't do modeling or big number crunching. You called it because you know it's true. Most people don't do those things. Tomb Raider sold about 5-7million on the PC. Even if it had sold double? Let's even up it to 15million. Now let's take that out of the 300 million windows computers sold every year. That's a minority. VR is an even smaller niche than that.

So, please, come up with a mainstream thing people do that the iPad can't.

Well no point feeding the trolls anymore. Especially since that was a really pathetic effort at it.

I answered exactly that in what you just replied to.

Can't use the iWork suite of Apps in iOS in the same robust fashion as OS.

Can't do a Back-up / Restore from Back-up without iTunes or iCloud.

He's just trolling. He's going to say "most" people don't do either of those things. It doesn't matter if 99.9% of people find the iPad useless for different reasons he's pretending all those reasons don't matter because there's no single reason that matters for 99.9%.

You've got me on iWork, it really needs a lot of work. Apple needs to either fix it up on iOS or give it up completely. They're pushing the idea of this as a productivity machine, but can't be bothered to really bring ove iWork completely? Even Microsoft is doing better than them with Office.

As for the backup and restore, I'd like to hear how you'd want to do it. I could see external hard drives being useful for that. Maybe special iPad-capable flash drives? I'm not going to argue that most people do that most of the time, but I can't argue against that being important for somebody who wants to use this as a primary (and potentially only) computer. I guess that's why I have a backup computer myself. I may be able to go full iOS, but if something went wrong and I had to restore it I'd be forced to use it.

Thank you.

I don't have to try to make it look like the iPad does what most people do. An iPad does do what most people do with a computer. A Chromebook does what most people do with a computer. A 300$ Windows PC does what most people do with their computer.

So, please, come up with a mainstream thing people do that the iPad can't. Something people actually do. Not this crap about high end gaming, or having to have a complex file manager. I'm talking about things people do that are normal things. Or admit you might be wrong. I'm willing to admit I'm wrong if I am. But everything you listed are for computer literate people, and the average computer user is not computer literate. They use whatever computer they get, they open files through applications, and they pro ably play light games like solitaire or mahjong.

The iPad is not a computer for everyone, but it is a computer for most.

Keep naming all of those "niches" and they add up to a sizable chunk of people with remarkably similar hardware requirements. Not only that, those are high cost, high margin products.

I listened to a Marco.org podcast and they wondered by Apple was missing out on such a niche - but expensive and profitable - segment such as VR. The old Apple would have jumped on that money maker!

I hope apple will lead the industry again with a new product that will have the effect the iPod, iPad, and iPhone did! Keep going R&D!

I'm not arguing agains niches, or against Apple making a product for them. I was just arguing that they were, indeed, niches. I was simply arguing we shouldn't judge general purpose computers by what a niche does.

For the many trolls on here that don't seem to "get" the iPad or how it can be a primary device or arguing what a "computer" is. I'll remind you that in many parts of the world (yes they exist), people's ONLY computing device is their smart phone. And its working out just fine.

For those who want to keep in touch with friends, browse the web, watch some video, listen to music......basically not NERDING OUT......an iPad is perfect. Why spend $1300+ when you can spend much less for the same things so many average people just want to use it for.

1300 dollars?? You're comparing Apple to oranges here... Yes, it's a shame Apple is still asking those prices while it hasn't been updated in years. Today's state of the art tech sells for half or less the other year. Can't understand why Apple just adjust their prices to proof they actually care for their customers. I don't mind paying premium but then it has to be premium from the out- and inside as well.

What happened to the company I was very proud off? Today it lost its cool and innovative crown. It became a money machine.

Pretty simple - just want wireless storage that I can do a Restore from Back-up - but need Apple to open it up to 3rd party types. I want to walk away from having a computer BUT right now I can't - and I want nothing to do with iCloud for multiple reasons.

Understandable. And you're right about that, they should definitely allow restoring from backup from third party solutions. *nod*

So you're telling me that Apple should stick to its point and swipe devices for browsing the Internet, mail, sharing photo's. I can do all of that at a < 100 dollar device. That's why Apple is losing share in the educational and pro markets. They don't invest in it anymore. Soon they'll lose consumers as well... What other tech company can afford bringing nothing new to the market for so long?

Don't know where you're coming from on the "when you can spend much less" statement.

I paid $1,332 CDN, all in, for a 9.7" iPP, 128GB, with cellular (not to mention the additional $167 CDN for an Apple Silicone Case & Cover to "protect" the investment.)

Not everyone needs a 128GB cellular iPad. My 128GB cost $749 USD. Sorry I was referring to USD only. You sure get hosed in other countries sometimes with pricing. That sucks.

Not everyone needs a 128GB cellular iPad.

BUT THAT'S WHAT I NEED, as a bare minimum, to even begin to think about walking away from having a computer.

Truth is if you're of the belief that an iPad can carry the day for MOST people - you're gonna' need a cellular iPad because why would you have any need for a hard-wired ISP if you don't need a computer?

Who said Apple is forcing the iPad as a Mac replacement?? YOU! Apple will not stop making Macs anytime soon. So relax, your crotch warmers will be updated in the fall.

And who says Apple will release Macs in the fall? YOU. *sad trombone*

Surely theres a shift in strategy but Apple is also at the mercy of the chip industry for now.....until they can start putting ARM processors in Macbooks in a couple years.

Weird, the industry (eg. Dell XPS) seems to be doing fine with procuring the right chipsets.

Real talk: I'm getting this impression from this particular apple ad that they (apple) are trolling us. Not too long ago, we had WWDC with all these app (ESPECIALLY EMOJIS)/ Mac os/ios stuff going on. I understand that it's developer's keynote thing..and may not necessary have mac updates at that time. So now, lot of people were waiting for updates....and even now as well. Why this particular ad? Especially with the comment of "what's a computer?"

This is true/hidden trolling ad. What, Apple? You want everyone to sell our macs and head to ipad pro as mac replacement?

Apple knows people want updates....so they sent us this message: "what's a computer?"
Apple damn well knows what a real computer is...but want us to go to mobile devices.

Edit: then again...i may be wrong...because it's just impression that I got from this ad.

Apple isn't trolling anyone. They've made it perfectly clear that this is where they see computing for the masses going. If you haven't realized this by now, you haven't been paying attention.

Yeah, i know Tim mentioned that he wanted to go to mobile direction...but not everyone is going to mobile direction as mac replacement.
But anyway, I'm saying..why at this time?

If you don't think Apple will release new macs later this year thats your idiotic problem. Because it will happen.

Apparently everyones been ignoring their statement. Now that they're pulling the trigger on it people are flipping out like it came out of left field.
