I managed to build an entire website (the OS X Hackers site) with my iPad Air 2 and edit quite a few pics so it has some potential to give my MacBook a break. It already took it's spot for note taking in some of my classes as well. People here are really undervaluing the great developers that make these tablets stand out.
I still need the iCloud Drive app to get a few updates like selecting exactly what remains downloaded on the device or not like Apple Music and Photos does. I'll be golden then.

You have a really good point. It's not what you have, it's how you use them, and how well you know your stuff. There are people who can achieve infinitely more on an iPad Pro than some people can on a Mac Pro.

A computer is something that you can drag and drop files into.

If that's the criteria, then I'd much rather use iOS over Windows 95.

They still need the Macs to develop the iOS apps - nobody is going to develop them on an iPad.

Not an assuring guarantee of strong support in this realm. They could just push out systems to run xcode. Which in the grand scheme of things is not the most laborious or intensive use of the system.

I have had larger video projects tie up my MBP all night long after I got back from work to work video. I have a long video that needs an effective (but slow running) noise plugin in I have....I stopped sweating render times since doesn't make it go faster. I fire up my xbox one or do other things and say well she gets done when she is done lol. Hours this can be.

Swift also went open source...in theory if someone cared enough in time we could see 3rd party here. Kind of like other application development for compiled languages. Want/need to compile C code...lots of ways to do that. On Linux, windows, macOS. Question is only a matter of if you want to pay and how much (free and paid for versions exist).

Nice try, but it's no surface. Let me see one running OSX and we can talk. iOS is great for consuming content, but it's not remotely a computer replacement. Local storage, full featured apps, external devices, are all missing (among any other things).

Now if someone doesn't *need* a computer, that's a different story. But for those of us that do, it's no comparison.

Sure Apple. iPad can do anything. Will we be able to run Xcode on the iPad? Can we download files from the Internet and manage them? Can I restore the iPad without iTunes? Can I connect a USB flash drive and transfer files to it? The iPad is gimped. Face reality Apple.

Microsoft did something right for once with the Surface Book.

Oh boy, this is perfect timing with their EXHAUSTING LACK of care for their Mac line-up.

Glassed Silver:mac

Well said. They're a bit at the mercy of Intel on this one, but seriously. I had to upgrade last year (to hand my 2014 down to my wife when hers died). Wish I hadn't - there's been no significant bump in any spec in two years. The reason sales are down is that there's nothing worth buying!

I just hope we don't get a 'macbook' style pro with that horrible keyboard, no on-board accelerated graphics, etc.

I'm happy that there are those that can get all their work done on the iPad Pro. But just as those people like to complain about us "whiners" wanting a full OS, there are those of us that actually need that to get our work done.

As much as people like to talk crap about the Surface, I actually enjoy using my SP3. I can run a full version of office and photoshop on it. I have a local filesystem I can access natively. I can run Eclipse, Tomcat and Git on it and get my work done. I can plug USB devices in directly. I can even run VM's on it (not as well as on my MacBook Pro, but its something I can and have done). And with the latest Win 10 preview I'm even able to have a native feeling *nix prompt. I can then fold back or remove the keyboard, kick back, and get frustrated on another level of candy crush.

Granted the SP3's battery life sucks, and being the i7 model it can get quite toasty, but you have to start somewhere.

I feel Apple is missing the boat with the reluctance to come out with such a device. Yeah yeah, I know, OSX apps aren't touch capable. So what? Build it, and they will come. The better Windows developers have added "Touch" modes to their apps that adjust themselves when you fold back/remove the keyboard, so its getting there. Apple could even integrate the iOS simulator and run iOS apps natively. You'd get a true 2-in-1 as you'd be able to run OSX apps AND iOS apps perfectly on the same device. Microsoft is sort of already there. Their Windows store selection is nowhere near as good as iOS's... which is why I'd prefer an Apple branded "Surface" device.

If the point is having a computer the size of an iPad Pro, then FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, make it work like a computer! Give it a mouse, usable ports, a real computer OS, file handling, etc. You know?...how real people work?

These ad demos showing someone writing on the screen like somehow, that what everyone does when they work, is ridiculous. I see people in offices, at desks, with dual and triple monitors, comfortable keyboards, lots of storage.

I suppose just because some genius can make a website on a Raspberry Pi doesn't prove that everyone, everywhere should which to a Pi to do all their work.

Any die-hard i-diot want to dive in and put their Apple Tin foil hat on now?

Apple are done for.

Have they lost all sense of timing and judgement there?

It's easier to ask what an iPad can do instead of what is a computer. Of course, you need Xcode to create apps for the iOS devices, so... there's one thing it can't do.

I'm not suggesting for one minute that an iPad Pro is an appropriate replacement for a computer. Neither am I suggesting that it should or could be.

Oh, imagine what your computer would do if it was an updated Mac(Book) Pro. That's right, we can only imagine. Alas, mr. Cook would rather sell us iPads instead. FFS, this asinine cringeworthy ad all but confirms the resentful turn this company has taken

Well, since Apple has the makings of a new company, it could use a new slogan to go with it. There.

I wonder if at this point Apple is gonna start selling OS X for PCs?

The best possible result is probably to have Dells running OSX, because Apple clearly doesnt GAF about macs. The Mac lineup is embarrassingly bad at the moment.
A few years ago this would have been unthinkable, but now I'd actually be all for it.

Sadly, it shall never happen. Apple develops software in order to sell hardware. Their business model has never been like Microsoft's.

  • Is there Time Machine for iPad Pro?
  • Where can I plug my USB-drive?
  • Cursor keys... where are the cursor keys?
  • Do I have to wipe my computers screen with a cloth every ten minutes?
  • Will it work with my scanner / HD camcorder from 2012 / my non-Apple phone?
  • How do I play Starcraft 2 with it?
  • Xcode? Where's my Xcode?
  • Dual screen? No, I don't want mirrored screen, I want extended screen...
  • Can I run my Parallels VM's on iPad Pro? No, I mean, this is a computer replacement, right, so I can't use another as a host computer....
  • My company is using Java based ERP system running on a browser... oh, not supported... bummer.
  • How do you join this to Windows AD?
  • ETC...
