Agreed I love Apple products and was really excited about the update... but there's no way I can justify $2,036 Canadian for the iPad (12.9", WiFi, pencil, smart folio and Apple Care).

It seems that Apple has really gone after the professional market with the newest iPad Pro's, which makes sense. Sadly I don't have any uses that would justify the price, and now that I've seen the beautiful new hardware I absolutely can't buy the base iPad with a home button.

I'll just stick with my 4 year old iPad Air 2 until it dies and hopefully by then the edge to edge screen with facial recognition will be available in the base model. (Unless I can figure out some use beyond watching movies, writing notes, reading and playing games that would justify dropping a couple grand - suggestions are welcome ).

P.S. - It's crazy how the incremental prices add up. I'd talked myself into spending up to $1200 and could have gone a little higher – which is the base price of the new 12.9" iPad Pro – but holy cow how things ramp up with a little memory and forget about the accessories.

I have a 4 year old Air 2 I paid less than $200 for because I traded a previous ipad and my playstation 3. It's time for an upgrade because this is what I was waiting for from an ipad AND the battery on my Air 2 isn't the best anymore.

Got my 2018 iPad with iPad Air 1 trade-in for $150. Best decision I’ve made all year tech related. The new iPads don’t interest me the way the iPhone Max did. Glad I spent only $150 to get my iPad experience up to speed. These new iPads are nice, but not worth the price jump.

Where did you trade in your air 1 to net you $180? Thank you.

I was really looking forward to finally getting my first iPad but have to agree with the OP. These prices are horrendous.

To those buying all the latest gadgets every year fully spec’d out - what the heck do you all do for a living? I mean I do ok but scoff at an $800 tablet with only 64GB and no accessories.

No one is pointing a gun at your head to buy the new model. BMW and Mercedes aren't robbing people by charging a premium price for a car, nor are airlines who charge a premium price for first class seats. If you can't afford it, then life goes on.

This post is the exact reason why prices keep going up.
How do you know if he can afford it or not ?
Maybe he's just smart with his money?
Even billionaires like to save money when they can. Only posers like to overspend.
In this day and age consumers shop for prices not products. The more expensive it is and the more people want it.
A fool and his money are easily parted.

$2,989 CAD after tax for the iPad Pro 12.9 (1TB), keyboard case, Apple Pencil & apple care +. Absolutely insane. Can’t justify 3k when I’ll still need to use my laptop for certain tasks.

For the 64GB memory comments, I use iCloud for all photos & stream movies etc. so 64GB just about suffices.

However, 128GB is the sweet spot for many, including myself. Apple know storage is the highest markup for profit £/$. They on purpose leave out 128GB making customers buy the 256GB. Same goes for the iPhones. A good business strategy no doubt but a kick in the teeth for the consumer as extra memory is dirt cheap.

I’m personally just not willing to give Apple £969 for only the 12.9 64GB plus £199 for the smart keyboard. My gen 2 12.9 & accessories will be fine for another year unless the competition heats up.

You poor thing :(

I'll be getting the 12.9" with a pencil 2 for work the day they are released here in Australia [7.11].

I'm an architect, and the time its going to save me by marking up directly onto PDFs with a pencil, rather than printing/marking up/scanning and then issuing is going to pay itself off in 10 hours of charge out time. It doesn't really matter what it costs for the productivity increase, because its time that is costly...not equipment.

Well... Apple has just released their new iPad Pro and I’m speechless, if you were going to use this iPad as a computer you would need to get the bigger size, the keyboard case and the Apple Pencil, all of this would cost £1,287, yet I can go buy the new MacBook Air for £1,199 and that has a bigger display, a physical keyboard, Touch ID, 2 USB C ports compared to 1 and 128gb compared to the base model iPad Pro 12.9” at 64gb. This is absolutely outrageous Apple are charging more money for their iPads than for their laptops, I can’t tell you how angry I am, I feel like Apple are trying to rob me, they should of at least included the Appl pencil and or the keyboard case in the box, this makes me feel sick.

Is it going to be the same post every time Apple releases something?
Let's see, 10.5" iPad Pro starting price seems unchanged at $649. Lame.

11" iPad Pro starts at $799!

12.9" 3rd gen Pro starts at a crazy $999 when the 2nd gen 12.9" was already pretty steep $799 before.

There probably wouldn't be such an uproar if the 10.5" price fell, the 11" started at the same price as the previous 10.5" price and the 12.9" didn't see a $200 price increase.

I would say depends how often someone upgrades their iPad. If You have someone that’s coming from an iPad Air one to the 2019 iPad Pro, that’s a massive upgrade and I’m sure the consumer could justify almost every facet of all the features that are upgraded from what they were previously using. But it also depends what one can afford as well. The Prices are expensive, yes, but it matters most depending how someone justifies what they want from the new iPad Pro.

I don't understand why so many people feel an injustice has been done. None of us own Apple, neither do any of us know what's going on behind the scenes. If you don't feel the product is worth the price, then you should probably not buy the product.

Here is a behind the scenes photo at Apple.

Tim and Dave are discussing the cost price of 64GB memory in the iPad's :D

Haha their are a LOT and I do mean a LOT of Apple share holders on this forum, so yes they do actually own Apple, they all have a personal financial interest in you buying all of Apples latest and greatest expensive kit!

Or you can look at it the other way and say "you get apple pencil support, faceID, longer battery life and a detachable screen all in a 5.9mm body".

If you are a digital artist or don't need full macOS then the 12.9" iPad pro is probably a better device. Just because it doesn't sit at the price point that makes it an impulse purchase doesn't mean it isn't value for some people. I would use it as a glorified netflix screen so its worth about £300 to me but to someone who is an artist and can do 90% of their work on it they might find it good value.

A sports car isn't good value for money if you just want it to commute but perhaps if you do track days you will get more out of it. Horses for courses but its a bit ridiculous to be complaining about the price of a cutting edge creative tool when you won't actually use the cutting edge features to get value from the product.

Same old complaints we hear every year about Apple gouging it’s customers. This too will pass. Most who say they will not but, will. The new features incorporated into the new iPad Pro is worth more so Apple charged more. If you do not like 64gb do not buy it but there are many who 64gb is just fine.

I do not see how anyone could have been surprised with the iPad Pro cost when Apple just introduced new iPhone with aggressive pricing. There are cheaper iPads and iPhones and if you do not want to pay over $1000 for a device, Apple has has provided less expense choices.

Buy of don’t buy, it is your choice.

No price decrease (msrp) for 2017 iPad Pro.

Apple is seriously thinking the public is stupid. Cause if they dropped msrp of 2017 10.5 iPad Pro to $549 and tried to sell the 2018 11 inch iPad pro at $799. That price gap would be way too big.

It’s just another sneaky way of Apple to make the $799 base 2018 model look reasonable when it isn’t.

They drop $100 off base iPhone 8/plus.

To me the pricing is reasonable. Try more to explore new things you can do with the iPad than to size it up with a laptop.

I have no direct issue with the price if I could guarantee a uniform screen (no piss yellow or multiple different colours across the screen), not scratched out of the box etc....

.....but we all know it will be the same old problems at a higher price.

Just my opinion, before someone comes along and trashed my thought.

I find it personally very troubling that so many people find ethics to be completely excluded from economics. When profit margins reach a certain point, it should start to raise some questions/concerns.

Granted, people can always buy something else or nothing at all. However, that does not mean that ethics don’t matter.

In terms of value, that’s absolutely up to subjective debate. If one thinks the value of what’s offered warrants the price charged, by all means buy it. The same holds true on the flip side.

Just my thought as someone that has been an Apple fan for a while and bought many Apple products. If they keep raising prices at this current rate, I may be looking elsewhere when I buy my next phone/computer/tablet.

Apple knows their market very well and knows to whom the iPad Pros are aiming for. They know that most casuals are going to opt for the cheap iPad, especially since it offers 95% of the functionality. They also had to increase the prices in order to justify the exorbitant iPhone XR and XS prices since the new iPad Pros have an even more capable processor and an actually better implementation of FaceID.

Having said that, keeping the 10.5'' iPad Pro at the same price is a joke not only because it's an 18 month old device but also because compared to the 2018 9.7'' iPad it doesn't justify its price. Essentially you pay double the price for a slightly bigger screen and refined body. They could have at least updated the processor to the A12X.

That is not answering my question. Apple does this consistently I don’t know where the shock keeps coming from every time.

You are entitled to your opinion, and although the concept of the ethics within the context of a free-market commercial transaction is a bit odd, I was prepared to give it serious consideration until your closing comment. There's so many qualifiers in it as to be a non-statement. So if you are not currently taking action that reflects your ethics, what ARE you saying?

Apple are certainly ensuring the Pro is priced as 'Pro'. I think the prices have gone beyond what I am willing to pay now, even though I can afford the prices with no issues. It all comes down to what you feel is acceptable for what you need. As someone said, if you are only going to use the Pro for browsing the web etc then its basically a bit of a waste of money.

In my case I'd being using it for just browsing and media consumption, I simply don't need the Pro and I guess Id be silly paying cost of admission. I guess the problem is that these devices are very desirable for obvious reasons. I'd love to click 'buy' right now because I love what they have created, but the reality is, I simply don't need an iPad let alone a Pro.

It’s all about branding and marketing. Apple clued you in earlier. They own the tablet market. Go research what usually happens in monopolies.

The iPhone was easier to charge up because carriers have their financing. There’s plenty of room for discounting though so be a bit patient. You’ll never get wealthy paying asking price for everything. Businesses don’t do it. Wealthy individuals don’t do that.

People tend to spend irrationally during the holidays. Apple is simply feeding them. After all no one needs this new iPad no matter what reason you’ve convinced yourself on...lol.

Also, don't underestimate the "boutique" war that is going on as well. Microsoft and Google have been raising the prices of their devices and accessories and Apple is simply upping the ante. This latest round, when Google announced the Pixel Slate and its accessories, many were surprised by the prices... and here is Apple meeting and/or exceeding prices.

Could be as simple as building in tariffs. Trump talks adding 25 percent. Apple may have said why wait better condition them now and blame trump if backlash becomes too negative.

I don’t really see ms or google making apple do anything. Googles hardware sales aren’t even worth acknowledging. MS entices those who apple doesn’t really target although ms is trying harder.
