$2k is just enough for a gpu anymore.
Yeah is getting ridiculous. My daughter recently bought Battlefield 2042, runs like utter garbage. Said straight while people keep buying, companies will keep abusing selling incomplete/broken games at full price.

Similar to the film industry the money men are killing the industry due to their sheer greed and lack of any creativity. They don't want the risk, but want all the cash. Hence why great films are so few and far between these days, sadly gaming is heading in the same direction :(

I bought Cyberpunk 2077 for both my daughter and myself on Steam & GOG. One of the biggest let downs in gaming. CDPR simply sold out for the money, releasing a broken game. Worse they blatantly lied about the games games content.

Told GOG straight that CDPR outright lied and GOG supported the lies, didn't remotely care. After all they got the $$$. Reputation burnt, subsequently have zero interest the studios future releases until proven otherwise.

Gaming should never be a commodity, however. between the greed of the publicist's and scalpers...

Imho the real innovation is in indie titles. The AAA stuff gets worse with every passing year and people still buy it and it drives me up the wall.

Maybe the silver lining of the gpu insanity is that more people will realize that AAA or gaming just isn’t worth that much time or money. Especially when top games run like garbage on the best hardware.

The alternative is that the gaming public continues to be mindless consooomers.

Because EGS sucks and should just die already.
This is absolutely true. I've always found Steam to be adequate, if poorly optimized for macOS. I absolutely appreciate GOG and the freedom that they allow gamers, plus their launcher is the least bad of the lot. I have 30+ games in my Epic library, from the free giveaways, mostly Windows-only, but have never purchased anything from the EGS. I'm going to make an exception this year, because right now Metro Exodus Gold, Hades, and Borderlands 3 are at ridiculously low price, but it feels gross doing it. I've seen Steam fanboys (which I didn't know actually existed until recently) give some guff to people who are stooping to using Epic, but I'm not going to turn them down, because Tencent is probably losing money on the exchange. Plus, the Mac version of BL3 is exclusive to the EGS, which is unfortunate. That's probably the worst part of this, some titles are becoming exclusive to a specific store.

Oh, and sidetracking a bit here, I saw that Remedy has signed a deal with Tencent for a "free to play" multiplayer shooter. The only reason I have used Boot Camp is to play Remedy games, such as the Max Payne series, Alan Wake, and Control. Remedy is better than this, and if this is the future of PC gaming, then I'm fine with my RPGs on the Mac, even if they aren't the much vaunted "AAA" games that some in this thread are touting.

For me it's all about the gameplay not the flash.

Best FPS/RPG you've never played, yet 100% free. When you fight you way through to the core of the X17 Lab, your heart will be pumping and you'll have a ways to go. That's gaming not just turning coin...

I do not understand these claims that Macs are unpopular for "any sort of gaming". You are an avid role-playing or simulation games fan? Then you have very good chances that your game is supported on macOS.
Then let us leave it at that.

You do not understand.

Let's talk about this when Universal 2 binaries of triple A titles will actually release.

Because EGS sucks and should just die already.

Today they're giving away the Tomb Raider Trilogy. All of the games are ported to Mac by Feral on Steam but Epic has only Windows ports. That's the publisher's decision I think so we should blame Square Enix or Feral. The site is a mess though right now because of the high demand. You can't log in, load pages, add games or download.

Yes, I remember seeing Tom’s Hardware’s review of the M1 Mini, and seeing a line saying that it wouldn’t be able to play Cyberpunk 2077.

Also remember going to myself ‘That thing’s got bigger issues than Mac Minis to worry about.’

Tencent keeps buying game developers because apparently there are no more big American shops willing to buy. (They just bought the Left 4 Dead developer Turtle Rock Studios)

When they say “any sort of gaming”, they really mean “my favorite game”. There’s more overacting here than in a high-school drama class.

There’s an important point being missed in this discussion. Most people do not buy computers to play games. They buy computers to perform work tasks. They might play a game or two when the work is done, but that’s just a side benefit. Hardcore gamers are the minority. Even in the PC world, Alienware computers are not the biggest sellers.

“Casual gamer” is not a term of contempt. At least, it shouldn’t be.

I would love to buy more games from GoG but their launcher is terrible (extremely slow download speeds) and installing games manually… 28 files for Cyberpunk, now that’s fun! I remember when I got cyberpunk as a present last year, it took over 5 hours until the game was ready to go. I have a gigabit internet connection ?

I'm sorry to hear that you've had problems with GOG. For a nostalgia kick, I just installed Darkwood and Hellpoint. Took about five minutes on my 800Mbps connection. Between Steam, EGS, and GOG, I've had the best download speeds and reliability with GOG. Cyberpunk took me maybe 20 minutes. Given your experience, it sounds like a local issue, which means GOG needs to work on their global server bandwidth distribution.

Which one is that? :)
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Anomaly, best game you've likely never played. Very much a game built for fans by fans. A world you can absolutely get lost in above and beyond many others..

Be warned the learning curve is vertical, yet if you get into the game world nothing remotely compares. You are what you are, how you want to be, play the role as you wish and deal with the consequences.

If you get into the game, you wont care about anything else S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a very deep series of games Anomaly more so. An FPS that puts many an RPG to shame and then some...

Deep in the Zone, still time to push on and head ever further north into the danger.
1640913129110.jpeg

Get to here in Lab X17 your heart will be pumping and for very good reason...

Back down south, Time for a few shots and bed. This FPS can roleplay and then some...

It's why the GeForce 1060 has still been the most popular GPU on Steam since it launched in 2016.

Yes, it's been on a decline, but you know what's looking set to take it's place? The 1650. And maybe the 2060'll slip into second or third place after that.

Unfortunately for nVidia, those aren't brand spanking new cards.

GOG launcher has always been OK for me and DL over VPN fast enough. My only beef is the rip off Cyberpunk 2077. Rest is OK and more importantly DRM free...

Thanks, I will absolutely check it out! Do you need the base game data to play it or is it completely separate?

Well, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series has been one of my favourite game franchises, and I am not at all surprised that it's my compatriots who made it :) A lot of us grew up on books by Strugatsky brothers and spent our childhood crawling around abandoned soviet industrial complexes.

The hilarious thing is that 1650 is not that far off the base M1, and yet people insist that "Macs are too slow for gaming".

No S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Anomaly is a full stand alone game that effectively plays across all the previous games maps :) As a fan of the series your going to be in for a rare treat I assure

There's a massive fanbase that keeps these games alive & up to date, including creating a full new standalone game that is better than many AAA releases. Only problem with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is if you get into it, you'll judge all by it.

Stalker's welcome to the zone...

I can easily play Doom 3 BFG on my base 13" M1 MBP, never seen the game look better thx to a great source port that runs natively on Apple Silicon.

Sure Doom 3 is an old game yet it's a fully realised 3D FPS, nor noted for being notebook friendly. The fan barely spools up, solid 60 FPS (capped) with max graphics, barring AA as that just tend to blur if set too high on the M1. No doubt the M1 can play a lot more games, but I want to try and keep to native apps as much as possible :)
