Will apple let us preorder but pickup on release day ????
i want that option
I don't think people will be able to receive the phone before the actual release date on the 22nd. So yes, at the soonest you'll be able to able to get it on release date.

I have class an hour after the presentation starts :( looks like I'll have to avoid the internet until I get out of class so I can watch the entire thing from the start after it's already aired
And then if you're an uber-nerd like me, you'll go back and check out some older keynotes as well afterward. I think last year I watched the one for the 3GS and maybe the 4 or 4S that night. Even a friend who works for Apple was like, "Now that's nerdy." :D

Based on past experience, when do display models usually appear in Apple Stores? Before pre-orders? Between pre-orders and launch? After launch?

That certainly makes it harder to make an informed decision for pre-order...
They will have ample photos of the devices right after the announcement and they have a 14 day return policy. I know it is not the same as holding it in your hand, but with the demand at launch, it is the best you can expect.

Anyone put their £1000 aside?

I have the money ready but not sure whether to get the 8 or the 7s plus. The 8 is going to be very expensive and I am not sure whether I really fancy the face recognition over the finger print, though I suspect this will be the last time we will get finger print recognition. I will wait until the event on the 12th and then decide.

Normally i would'nt hang about, but for this royal "hawtness" reviews first before blindly parting with a grand or so:D. I have already decided bezels are so jurassic hence 7s+ is no longer a contender

If you don't like it you can either send it back or most likely sell it for a tidy profit if stock is thin on the ground.

I have the day off on release day. Do you think it is better to pre order than to wait in line for days or hours? Who has had this experience?

You can try to preorder and if that doesn't work, then do the line on launch date. Keep in mind the preorder date will be before the launch date. Also, last year, the stores did not have the Jet Black in stock on launch day, so only those who preordered, got their Jet Black iPhones on release date.

You're asking if it's better to go online and place an order in 5 minutes and wait for it to be sent to your door, or stand in a line for hours with no guarantee that there'll be adequate supply?

This is exactly what i am asking. Since i have the day off i am thinking to line up so i can get it faster

I definitely wouldn't try taking a few mins to pre order online then. So much easier to queue up overnight and then hope by the time you get in the store they have the exact colour & configuration you want.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's 0 stock in stores on launch day. Day 1 stock could be reserved for preorders only, given the supply constraint rumors. Of course, all speculation.

@Dave245 @LoveToMacRumors here Some inside pictures of Steve Jobs Theater

Apple has been working to complete the venue in time for its 10th anniversary iPhone launch on September 12th. It features a large cylinder-shaped lobby with stairs down to the auditorium. The lobby has all glass walls and a carbon fiber roof that is entirely supported by the glass walls.

My point is that if you pre-order as soon as it goes online you're probably even more likely to get the model that you want on launch day, and it will take several minutes instead of several hours!
