Hi everybody,

wonder if there will be an 8k Studio Display in the near future that works well with the new Ultra Mac Studio ? I am new with Apple Displays.
Thank you !

Best regards,
Schnitzel

Hello!

Im wondering if anyone with an HP ProBook with Intel i5 has tried if the studio display works correctly?

Thanks!

Have a question for anyone who is using dual ASDs and a macbook pro. I use all three displays. Many times when my computer goes to sleep and I come back later to log back in, I find my windows all re-arranged. Many of the windows that were previously open on the Apple Studio Displays are now showing up on my laptop screen instead. Anyone else experience this issue and know a possible fix?

Thanks.

This is a known issue. Happens frequently to people using non-Apple displays. Like you I had this problem when I was using my MBP14 M1P screen plus two ASD. I subsequently switched to a Studio w/ 3 ASD and no longer have the problem. Someone speculated in a different thread that the issue is the differing wake times of the monitors. I could see this also being the case b/w the laptop screen and the external displays. Not sure.

I believe people have had some success using third party display management tools like Better Display.

Upgraded my 2017 iMac to a Mini M2 Pro and Studio Display this week.

Had it three days and the Studio Display has developed a very thin horizontal line about a third the way up.
On the phone and they couldn't send a new one out and pick up the faulty one the same day so it's being picked up Monday for a refund and I've ordered another one that's coming tomorrow.

Bit of a faff but I guess these things happen.

The line has changed from dark to light since this afternoon and seems to be fading but it's still there and I'm not confident in this screen now even if it did fix itself, especially at the cost these are.

I think if it's found to be not faulty you'll be charged a fee for costs incurred.

Take a photo of it while it’s visible.

I've got loads of photos. It's slowly fading away and can only see it if I whack the brightness right up now.
I did worry what's going to happen if they don't see it but surely as I could return it for any reason within 14 days (UK), it shouldn't matter?

Here's some of the pics:

Looking at your picture, that LCD is damaged. Lines going across like that are not normal. If it were say, a bad cable, I'd expect there to be more than just 1 very thin line.

It's disappeared now. Like I say though, I'm not confident in this display now so it's going back.

Incidentlly I tried it with my iPad Pro and the line was still there.

Hello folks - I’m thinking of treating myself to another ASM. I bought one when they came out as a second monitor to go with my 2020 iMac to replace an old HP Dreamcolour… I’m now replacing the iMac with a Mac Studio and will make the ASM my main monitor but the idea of resurrecting the Dreamcolour as my second monitor is grinding my gears…

If I buy a second ASM do the speakers configure themselves into a stereo speaker system?

The speakers don't configure themselves automatically into a stereo speaker system. Or at least with my 2023 16" MBP they don't, so I'm guessing you'll find similar results with your Mac Studio. Only one monitor will play sound by default.

There's a couple of options. Cheapest one is to use the Audio MIDI Setup app that is included in MacOS and combine the sound output of the two devices together as one. Downside to this is that your left monitor will play both left and right channel audio and your right monitor will also play both left and right channel audio, so not exactly a "true" stereo setup. Another downside is that you will lose the ability to handle volume control from your keyboard...although I believe there are some third party utilities that can help with this.

Option #2 is to buy the app Loopback which lets you create a new virtual speaker in which you can play the left channel through both the left and right speakers of your left display and the play the right channel through both the left and right speakers of your right display for a more accurate "stereo" setup. Also, you will retain the ability to control sound through your keyboard controls.

I went with Option #2 and one other perk of that setup is that I can limit the max volume of the two ASDs (2 ASDs together get really loud) so that even if I turn the volume up to 100% on my keyboard control, there is a hard limit preventing it from going all the way up.

Hope this helps. Happy to answer any other questions you have about it.

I have 3 ASD and a XDR. They are the bomb.
How does the display quality of the studio compare to the XDR? I have an LG Ultrafine 5K and the Studio display quality was slightly better than the LG. I am thinking about purchasing the XDR because I want to have only a single display.

While the Studios are nice, there really isn't a comparison. The blacks on the XDR are inky black. On the ASD, not so much at all. If you want just one display, the XDR is a no brainer.

Having owned both, this is right. If money isn't particularly an object and you want one display it is for sure a "no brainer". Said this before - the XDR is one of the nicest "things" I've ever owned. It's truly exceptional. Because I'm not a pro and don't get much value from HDR, multiple ASDs fits my use better. I wish Apple had made the rumored pro-motion version of the ASD but my bank account is glad they didn't.

The rumored pro-motion monitor version was (is) probably the next iMac....once the hipe of Mac Studio and Mac Pro calm down (maybe a year or so), I would not be surprised that we see a pro motion iMac.

I think Apple is done with the pro-sumer/iMac Pro version of the iMac. It was a one off, to acquiesce consumers while the redesigned 2019/2023 Mac Pro was being worked on.

Now if you want a similar performing Mac, you have the Mac Studio + Studio Display combo.

I may wait to pull the rigger until September to see if Apple updates the XDR which I highly doubt they will.

Not sure why but I'm hesitant to install any 3rd party stuff. If MacOS doesn't do it, I generally avoid it. Al Dente on the laptops being the exception.
I feel the same way about mine, except giving the laptop a free pass. If it's Windows I don't really care though.

HEADS UP!!!!

If you are using the Mac Studio Display and running the Sonoma beta, it appears to update the firmware with every version. It does so without a lot of warning. I had stepped away and ended up with a mess.

Make sure there is NOTHING plugged into the ports of the display or the update might fail. This is especially true, if this is the only display on a Mac Studio.

I have twice ended up with the dreaded support.apple.com/display/restore

The fix has been to:
  • Plug in an older HDMI display to see what you are doing, if you are not on a MacBook.
  • Unplug any other cables on the Studio Display.
  • Unplug the power of the Studio Display.
  • Wait 10sec.
  • Plug it back in.
  • Wait... and maybe pray.
With Sonoma Beta 2 it took a couple of attempts for this to be sorted out.

I do wish Apple bundled a Configurator-like utility to properly restore the Display without a lot of hassle or fretting!

HEADS UP!!!!
...
Yes, thanks.
I am going to sit out this beta. Definitely don't want to update my two displays with early beta software, especially if it's flashing it every single time.
Hopefully at release, the updates will be optional for those who don't want to (though, knowing Apple, this will not be the case) -- or at least less troublesome.
