Thanks, I did see that on the spec page but I’d also seen videos suggesting they only the latest generation iPad Pro would work so wanted to check from owners

I think the distinction is the USB-C port. All 11” iPad Pros have it, but 12.9” iPad Pros only from 3rd generation onward.

I am having issues with audio not playing from my display with one of my Macbook Pros. My M1 Macbook Pro works perfectly, but when I connect my 2018 Macbook Pro (13-inch), I can't get audio to work. I checked device compatibility list and it should be fine.

Any thoughts on how to fix? I've tried unplugging but that didn't help. Is there a way to direct which speakers to use (similar to a webcam)?

Hi everyone, looking for some advice from you technical folks, Im planning to get the Studio Display to pair with my new 15" MBA. What I want to do is get a docking station/adapter to connect things like eThernet, USBs, and SD drives.

So my question is, do I connect the docking station to the ASD? or would it connect to my MBA?
I'm trying to make it easy for me to take the MBA in and out quickly without having to disconnect multiple cables to get going.

Thanks

Better connect the docking station to the Apple Studio Display. This way, it's easier to pick up your MBA and travel with it by simply disconnecting 1 cable.

The ASD has one upstream Thunderbolt port. The downstream ports are all USB-C.

What you want is a Thunderbolt (3 or 4) dock that has at least one downstream Thunderbolt port that you would connect the ASD to. (And the MacBook to the upstream/host port.)

I use an MBA like this with a Caldigit TS3+ and have not had any issues:

I would have upgraded to the TS4 since it has two downstream Thunderbolt ports, but regrettably the optical audio output has been removed:

Thank you for sharing, looking at these 2 it seems a bit over kill for me and my usage.

I found this anker hub on Amazon and it seems to have enough ports for my needs except for the Audio one which is not a dealbreaker. any thoughts on these type of hub?

Base on the comment above, I would plug this hug to one of the 3 USB-C downstream TB, and the 1 upstream would plug to my MBA and all would be good to go?

I got my Mac Studio and Studio Display in April as a birthday present to myself. Couldn't be more pleased with my purchase.

Had something unfortunate happen though, about 3 weeks ago. Our new puppy found her way into my home office and chewed through the power cable (thankfully it was unplugged). I had been re-arranging and putting together a new desk, etc.

Anyway, luckily, I have AppleCare+; I purchase it on virtually every Apple item I have ever bought for over a dozen years or more, now. So, I took my ASD to one of the two Apple Stores in my city, this was on July 3rd. They did warn me my estimated time for repair was by July 16th. So, I've just been waiting patiently using an old HP monitor from work.

This morning, I got a call from the Apple Store (first actual update I've received thus far) and was told that they have the new cable but they don't have the tool to remove the old one, etc. Because I'm fairly up on all things Apple, I knew what she was talking about. What I don't understand is how an Apple Store could not have this tool? Furthermore, how could an Apple Store not know that they would need that tool to repair the cable over two weeks ago?

I almost get the feeling that they thought they could do the repair by just simply removing it. Not realizing that a tool had been developed specifically for this purpose. Just seems odd to me. I guess I must be the first person to have had a cable related issue in my city of nearly two million people. 🤷‍♂️ I digress.

I'm seriously missing my ASD.

That is bonkers. Seems like an awful long time to wait for swapping out a power cable 😖

I am curious— anyone running 2 Studio Displays stacked vertically? Seems like that might be tough to make work in any kind of ergonomic fashion. Doesn’t stop me from being curious, haha. (I want more real estate than a single 27” display. Single XDR would be my preference, but I‘m considering my options,

I am using one of the USB C ports on the back of my Studio Display with a Samsung T5 2TB SSSD and find slight movements or bumping the monitor causes the SSD to disconnect

I was actually going to try this as I've got two VESA models, each on their own arm. But unfortunately they don't go high enough to put one over the other. I'd have to get a new arm to do it.

Try a different port. Try a different USB-C cable. I've not experienced this and I've got my keyboard and my mouse dongle plugged into one of my displays and an Apple CD/DVD Superdrive plugged into the other monitor. No disconnects if my bump my desk. And the monitors are both on VESA arms so they get moved not infrequently.

Ahh, dang. For sure you’d need a bit of height for the top monitor. How were you thinking of stacking them? Seems like a lot of people put one up pretty high which doesn’t seem like it’d be comfortable to use much. I was considering trying to have the top one close to eye height — maybe up a few inches— and have the second below at an angle. Might still be too tall though. Seems like the different “tall” solutions out there are based more on a dual 24” setup (LG DualUp, Geminos, etc.)

A pair of 24” 4.5k Studio Display XDRs might be interesting… how about it, Apple? 😂

I wasn't sure how I would do it. I mostly wanted to see what it looked like.
I do have the left one turned to portrait orientation, and given its aspect ratio, it's pretty tall. Briefly thought about turning both portrait, but I need one display with some width to it for spreadsheet-like data (employee schedules and such).

Speaking of the LG DualUp -- I have two of them on my work-from-home PC. I posted pictures I think in the Mac mini forum. One of the threads was talking about displays and mentioned the DualUp, so I posted mine. They're huge. For what I use them for, they're great. MacOS's support of them is not great as there's only one natively-supported High-DPI setting and it's kind of big. I didn't install SwitchRes X to see if I could add additional ones since I don't use them on my Mac anyway.

Yeah, do I wish it was cheaper? yeah sure but it is what it is and I am fine with it, I just want to get a quality product for what I am paying for. But thanks, if I end up pulling the trigger again I hope I don't end up getting a lemon again!
I purchased another unit and set it up. So far it seems there is no buzzing. Fingers crossed 🤞

But damn the quality of the display! speakers! even the webcam for video calls!
I forget how much I have payed for it (my wallet is crying again!) 😀

I wish it could accept multi source without doing tricky dongle/hubs!

I just don't understand how did Apple not thought maybe someone has a mac mini + work laptop or any combos of 2 macs 🤦‍♂️

I guess this counts as a tricky dongle, but it looks like a pretty clean solution.

Although this may not support camera, speakers, webcam, ports, etc?

In celebration of paying off my second display, here's a pic of my current set up! I recently got a longer thunderbolt cable so no more unsightly cable stretching across to the Mac Studio. No complaints here, these displays have really helped my productivity at work! My only regret was not waiting for ones with tilt adjustments (I bought these very early on when the different configs were hard to find.)

I saw a refurbed VESA model with nano-texture and finally caved in to treat myself and joined the club. I'm very pleased with the display.

My Dell U2723QE was good, but this display blows it out the water.

  • 33% more pixels make text super sharp
  • Nano-texture makes the text less sharp (when compared to non-nano textured version), but from the distance I'm sitting at, I was not able to perceive it.
  • Nano-texture completely removes all glares on the screen even with my desk lamp that is shining close by where it would get picked up with the Dell monitor. This dramatically increases the perceived contrast across the entire screen. Colours pop and the picture looks like it's printed on the monitor itself.
  • The monitor turns on in a split second, wow!
  • Monitor can be controlled by pressing keys on the magic keyboard without having to reach for the monitor, magic!
One interesting thing to note is that in pictures, nano-textured display looks quite blurry, but in real life this is not how I perceive it. This makes me believe that the display is engineered for our visual perception which cannot pick up on the refractions that the etched glass is having which the camera can. I just find this magical and really well thought out.

Yes, it‘s a few days until any of us will actually be “owners,” but the reviews should be coming soon, and we should have a dedicated thread to share our thoughts. Suggested topics of discussion:
  • What are your initial impressions (after you set it up)?
  • Are you replacing an existing display or adding a new display?
  • Are you satisfied with your selection of stand/mount? Would you get a different stand/mount if you had to do it over?
  • Are you using it with Windows? How well does it work?
Great

I'm about to buy a new Mac. I'm just deciding between a Mac Mini M2 Pro or a Mac Studio. I'm seriously considering an Apple Studio Display 27".

I was considering a Dell U2723QE 27" but like a lot of monitors it wobbles and isn't the best build quality. The Samsung Viewfinity S9 27" 5K is all plastic and also wobbles as I've seen in videos.

I'm currently using an Apple 20" Cinema Display with ADC I bought 20 years ago. Owning this monitor has made me consider a Studio Display. The Studio Display works great with a Mac and has an excellent image and build quality. If I get the Studio Display I'll post here with my thoughts.
