There are calculations that say that with Display Stream Compression (DSC) it could also work with Thunderbolt 4 and 120Hz at 5k (5120x2880), but I don't think you'll get that in practice. For this reason, I assume that such displays will only come with Thunderbolt 5 (DisplayPort 2.1).
Thanks, I'll have to grab the M4 Pro to future proof myself in that case.

Has anyone here ever solved the Studio Display buzzing issue when they've had it? I recently moved apartments, and I'm getting a really bad buzzing noise from both my Studio Displays. I never had this at my previous residences. The noise originates from around the Apple logo on the back on both of them. I've heard people claim this is where the power supply is. My first Studio Display is from the initial production run while the other was purchased earlier this year, presumably being manufactured more recently.

I've had both displays into Apple for repairs. They weren't able to fix anything. I've also tried a variety of electrical solutions like expensive voltage regulators and none fix the buzzing issue.

I've seen posts theorize the buzzing is the result of other devices on the electrical circuit nearby especially speakers. There are no speakers on my desk, but this apartment has EV charging on the same circuit as the building I'm in. The electrical wiring of this place is also pretty suspect even being prone to flickering at times. I've got a lot of other gadgets on my desk that could cause the buzzing if this theory is correct. However, I've tried unplugging everything in the room, and it doesn't make a difference.

The buzzing from both displays is so bad that it gives me a headache over a long work day. I'm ready to sell the Studio Displays and switch to a new set of monitors. I really don't want to though...If anyone has recommendations to fix this issue, please share! Thank you!

Out of curiosity (and I'm just brainstorming because your issue sounds interesting), what happens if you move one monitor to a different room and plug it in?

Tried a UPS as well? Perhaps having the power converted to DC and then back to AC might help get rid of that buzzing.

@dcmaccam apparently the ASD didn't buzz at their previous residence.

The ASD doesn't seem to have good shielding / power supply filtering. The first one I bought developed an obnoxious buzz a week after I got it. The second one I have now, emits a quiet buzz if I move it to some other outlets around the house. It's really a shame they didn't just put the power supply in a separate brick like the 24" iMac.

I'd wonder about what's going on with the power quality in your house, perhaps some of the outlets have fairly impressive voltage spikes? Power supply buzzing is most likely coming from the ceramics capacitors on the line voltage side due to the dielectric having a significant piezoelectric response.

Im thinking of picking up a Mac Mini with a Studio Display.
I understand the studio display has no power button and will come on/off with the Mac Mini - so will sleep when the Mac Mini sleeps etc.
What if I want to switch the monitor off straight away?
For instance - if I'm leaving my desk and know I wont be back for a while, can I not switch the monitor off without having to wait for the Mac Mini to go to sleep (or have to set it to sleep manually every time)?

You can set a hot corner in macOS to put the display to sleep, which will instantly put the display in sleep mode as soon as you push the mouse pointer into that corner. But the monitor’s power state is otherwise completely controlled by macOS.

I usually just use OPT+CMD+Q, it will lock the desktop and go to sleep after 3 seconds

I have the Apple keyboard with fingerprint key, I press the corner of that key and it locks and sleeps. Has to be the corner though, if I press the full key, it locks and immediately unlocks again.

Mine doesn't unlock immediately again, unless I press and hold for a bit. A simple press on the button will lock the screen for me.

Thanks for sharing this. I just bought my first ASD and Mini. Yep, grizzled, salty ol' me, trying something new (the Mini) in Appleville.

Ordered refurbished ASD standard today for my MBA15M3. Meanwhile LG 32“4K-880 was used with Creative Pebble V3 Speackers. As I wanted a clean desk setup with no speakers, cables and separate cam I went for better locking, finer but costy solution from Apple.
Samsung Viewsonic S9 5k was also in the race but leaking brightness control from Keyboard, flat sound and plastic feeling could not convince me although it was offered for only 800€.
My M4 Mini is connected to 65“ Sony OLED in the living room and my old but still operating iMac27 Late 2012 is used by the kids.

Just bought another ASD but its developed a horizontal line across it. Spoke with Apple and looks like they don't have a mail-in repair option for these and I'm a 5 hours drive away from an Apple Store.

Best option they thought would be for me to courier the Display to someone down there who could make an appointment, take it along, get it repaired and send it back.

To their credit, after speaking to a few different people, they agreed to replace it by courier as it's only 3 weeks old. UPS were going to pick up the old one today (they haven't) and once they get it back they'll send a new one out.

Glad they did that for you 🙂

I knew someone would have created an adapter to lower the VESA attachment. Nice, I guess.

I'm thinking of picking up a 23" Cinema Display for $30.

Are there any known red flags with this display? Will it work with a M1 Mac mini?

I have multiple MacBooks. Thinking about selling my 24" m1 iMac and 2017 27" iMac to get a studio display. How easy is it to just use a MacBook with it rather than buying a m4 Mac mini? I have two m3 airs, and two m3 pros. Thanks in advance.

I'm deciding between visa and tilt (forget the other one). Logic says go-vesa, as maybe you want somenkinda flexibility, and I already have a nice vesa stand that cost about $70 from Amazon. A lot of you use the arms. I tried that years ago (Ergotron?), and it's great but I don't need that presently. Tilt is clean, and easy.

I'll bet Apple is selling a lot of these now that the Mini is so popular, which has maybe factored into my setup, although it could be just a coincidence? (Big Money in coincidence).
