Yes, they can release a software update without the store being "down" (obviously), but they would have to change a few things if they did release the software update. Eg. The pictures saying that the appletv update will be "Coming Soon" and the posters saying "Coming to your TV soon" etc.

The page for :apple:TV is still up. I guess that means it isn't coming out today. :D

My guess is that the online apple store is down so they can announce the arrival of the new Penryn MacBook Pros.

Why does it really matter if it comes out today? Did you really buy the AppleTV with the sole intention of using a feature not yet released? At least we know its no longer a wish list feature and that it will actually be on the AppleTV, that seems to be the toughest part and thats over! Now when it comes out it comes out! It isnt like you've never rented a movie before! Be patient, when it gets released it gets released. The fact that Apple has pushed back the release of the software should simply tell you one thing... They are pushing for a quality customer experience, they didnt do it just to piss everyone off. quality over quantity

I'm definitely not loosing any sleep waiting for this release but the ability to rent movies directly from the :apple:TV was the deciding factor for me on whether to purchase it or not.

We can still have a bit of fun and be a little excited for it. I bought my appletv when it was first released and have loved it, I'm just excited to see a change. It'll be nice. Don't be such a negative nancy. That's right, I said it.

As a matter of fact, I didn't buy the original :apple:TV because it lacked some of the features I was looking for such as buying iTunes content from my couch as well as rental features. When Steve announced Take 2 at MacWorld, it convinced me that :apple:TV was finally right for me so I went out and bought one with the understanding that within 2 weeks or so, I'd get what I bought it for.

Going by the sheer number of new :apple:TV owners after MacWorld, I suspect many people bought it for Take 2.

I understand and appreciate that Apple would delay the release to ensure quality, but it is a very poor practice to delay a release over and over... specially with the stock falling as steeply as it has since MacWorld.

Oh if its all in good fun then thats cool... and the idea of renting from the AppleTV is cool also though not revolutionary as i can rent HD from my Cablebox right now. although i know it wont happen it think Netflix watch now feature implemented into the AppleTV would be cool but that would directly compete with iTunes so that aint happening. I'm not being negative, it just doesnt make sense to get upset over something that isnt out yet especially when we all know we are gonna get it for sure when it gets released and it will be free which is also nice. until then sit back and enjoy your AppleTV in its current form...

Well... yes.

What I'm referring to is the one or two weeks comment. If you have no intention of delivering it within one week, don't say it.

The best way is to under promise and over deliver. They obviously had no idea when they were going to get it out or they'd offer us a date.

Another point worth mentioning is that while I like to follow Apple updates and news on a regular basis, other people who purchased the :apple:TV after watching parts of the keynote on the news or on iTunes have no idea why their :apple:TV is not doing what was advertised.

One sticking point for me is that I bought :apple:TV for my grandmother in Portugal and took it there this week. I had planned to set up Flickr on her :apple:TV so that she could see the daily uploads of photos of my family that I put on my Flickr account. I signed her up for an internet account and that's one month's worth of internet gone down the drain.

These are the stories of the victims of :apple:TV's broken promises :p

I understand what you are saying, though personally i would have waited until it was released before purchasing, and integrating it for that sole purpose, into a setup. I actually just sold my 40Gb AppleTV because i got an insane deal on a new 160GB at costco. I simply wanted to larger space so i could put all of my TV shows and Movies on the appleTV without having to stream them.

one a side note regarding rentals... does anyone find it odd that while almost all movie rental establishments have done away with rental timeframes, apple has a 24 hour period which is way less than it used to be at B&M stores? Now i understand that the Movie companies may have a say in that, but why dont they care how long netflix allows you to have their movie? I dont see any reason why i couldnt rent a digital movie for 5 days @ $3.99!?!?! I can keep netflix movies for as long as i want which actually reduces their inventory... with digital it would seem more acceptable to have unlimited time frames! I would also like to see a rental plan like netflix for AppleTV... unlimited rentals for $15/month now thats awesome!

Why frustrate yourself and even read comments in a thread devoted to WHEN this much anticipated update will be released when you personally don't care?
Those of us who are interested in this topic use this forum to express our thoughts, make conjectures, vent and probably learn something more about the many ways our beloved Apple both amazes and vexes us. So, please...Just let it be...

Oh the beauty of competition. Apple will have to compete with Netflix for the online rental market, specially if Netflix comes out with their own tv box as rumored.

HD rentals is already an excellent start though. I would be in line to sign up for a $15 unlimited rental program.

Because I am bored andlonely and want to be part of something and there is a part of me that wants that damn apple tv update so I can watch an HD new release on my 1080 HD TV! Cmon Apple, you bastards!

Oh bah humbug! I woke up and decided to check this thread and now I've been up for two hours already. I'm going back to bed and hope that I can download Take 2 when I wake up again.

Zzzzzz

This was me. I did not watch the entire Keynote and caught glimpls about the ATV being able to rent movies. To be honest from the hype from Apple and the videos available on their website I thought the software update had come out with the keynote. So I bought the ATV two weeks after the keynote thinking it already had Take 2. Yes I was misinformed but from the glimps of hype I thought it was a feature they had already added. I was disappointed since I bought this product for the movie rentals alone. I am patient though, it will come.

All online rental structures have the 24 hour period. Xbox Live does the same thing and I believe the Netflix online rental is the same. It must be something the movie industry has stipulated. It is ridiculus though. Often I have to watch movies in chunks because muy 18 month old daughter keeps both my wife and I pretty busy.

It may be coming?

The store was down this morning and Apeture 2 was released. But if you go to the Apple TV page, middle left, where it used to mention the software upgrade coming soon, there is nothing. I think this is a change. Anyone else confirm this or is it my over active imagination?

I just went to the ATV site and it still says Movie Rentals Coming Soon over the TV image.

Still says 'Movie Rentals - Coming Soon' on the page I can see, but your right there was something that said 'Free Update - Coming Soon' and I can't see that anywhere.

I can still see this though

All the new features of Apple TV — including movie rentals, a built-in music store, and big-screen access to Flickr photostreams and .Mac Web Galleries — are coming soon as a free software upgrade
