Is it, I don't think so. I have never had a chip in any SS Apple watch or even a scratch in my Space Black SS AW.
I think some people believe if they keep saying something that isn’t true it will become true LOL

I guess to qualify for replacement based on damage the Watch has to be to be unusable. The fact that most of the damage is being noticed on the bezel due to metal gouging , it could be argued that the gouges pose a significant scratch risk. So perhaps that could qualify for a replacement.

I was under the impression that you could change out under warranty if you were willing to pay the price, literally...

You mean to pay the 55£ charge (or equivalent depending on where you reside) and get a replacement Watch?
I think apple decides whether the watch could be replaced I would have thought.
And unless apple decides the damages to be non-cosmetic you would be out of luck I am afraid.

Without looking at the terms and conditions or talking with an AppleCare rep directly, here's what Apple's site says about this, under the Hardware coverage section and its fine print:

"Unlimited incidents of accidental damage protection,2 each subject to a service fee of $69 for Apple Watch and Apple Watch Nike, or $79 for Apple Watch Edition, Apple Watch Hermès, and Apple Watch Ultra, plus applicable tax...Accidental Damage means physical damage from handling due to unexpected and unintentional events."

I guess there's room for interpretation from both you and Apple, along with your wallet's ability to pay, if I'm reading into this correctly...

Well, the terms and conditions for AppleCare+ are not subject to interpretation, they are very explicit. They specifically exclude service to “repair cosmetic damage not affecting the functionality of the Covered Equipment”

Well, then, I guess if you're determined to get a replacement, do your best to destroy it and have a good cover story for how it happened! ;)

Well It is as simple as that!
Couldn’t have said it more explicitly !

In that case, hope it’s not too durable.

Another way would be to steal a watch. Just don’t get caught.

My point is just because you can get away with it, does not make it OK

If you want some ideas, take a look here (just don't expect to destroy the screen)! I'm glad that I can live with normal wear and tear, something that I had A LOT harder time doing in the past. There's a saying in Japanese 侘び寂び (wabi sabi), which basically is the embracing of imperfection; not a bad idea if you wish to remain sane and sleep better at night...

Nothing against the stainless steel Watch here but the more I see my ultra the more I like it. I paid a visit to the Apple Store yesterday to try different straps. aluminium and stainless versions don’t appeal to me any more. may be it’s just me 🤨.
my purchase of ultra was purely to try it out, never thought I would fall in love with a bulky 61 gram version.

That is an Aluminum Series 8 though. Of course it's going to be more robust than that. A comparison to the Stainless Steel version would be much more interesting.
Unfortunately I think it would be the same result. I broke the screen getting my SS out of a swimming locker, it fell about 18” on to a tiled floor 😬 (thank goodness for AppleCare +)
Sapphire is even more brittle than Ion x.

I guess all the worry about scratches would be until the first scratch, after that you get used to it.

Not even the first scratch worries me. After all an Apple Watch is a tool with a limited usable life span (yes you know what I mean, we all had a few Apple Watches already of the last years).

AS you say, it is 61 gram. And with the Alpine loop it is only 73 grams. Only 5 grams more than a normal 44mm watch with a sport band. Not heavy at all. I have quite a few traditional watches that are way heavier!

Yep it was a real missed opportunity not using stainless for the comparison!

Yeah I wondered that as I’ve never had applecare before on any of my devices. Because I do a lot of watersports I took AppleCare out for my ultra but I’m not sure what qualifies as a replacement. Is AppleCare a direct replacement for damage or a repair?
Direct replacement.

Essentially either the screen or the back needs to be smashed. If the watch is inoperable they’ll replace it.

No one will get a direct replacement for a scratched, having chunks out

I haven't seen one video of the front screen smash scratch yet, its unbreakable ;)

Not sure about the back though

No, that’s right they won’t. If the watch still works, it’s classed as cosmetic which means no replacement. My comment for direct replacement was in reference to what they do when they do honour AC+

I predict there will be a lot more ‘accidental’ rear casing breaks for the Ultra compared to previous watches 🙊

I think you may be right. Waiting for my first one and see how my OCD side gets over it 😅. I may bang it against something intentionally to see how it goes 😂🤪

A handle like MacGiver does not seem compatible with OCD :)

There were scratches in these two places, but I removed them in 2 minutes! I couldn't believe it!!!

I’ve lightly hit my SS watch on walls, doors, etc over a 5 year period. There have never been a deep scratch on any of my SS models (ie: nothing that cant be buffed out with a cape cod cloth in less then 2 mins)

I haven’t seen any pictures of deep scratches on the Ultra either. Everything that’s been shown so far is not a deep scratch. Both my SSS6 and TiS7 had surface scratches on the case but I would t call them deep scratches and I wore them everywhere. I actually thought the SS case showed scratches more because is was so mirror polished.

I do think the satin finish of the Ultra will show superficial wear more easily than the slightly more brushed/polish of the base to and SS models. One person has already just polished out a whole ultra case and it looks great. I personally like the broken in look of classic Ti and SS watches and bands.

What I can’t deal with is any screen imperfections and that’s NOT going to be an issue in the Ultra or the base SS model.
