Amazon and MacMall do charge sales tax. Sad. Is there anywhere to buy Macs without sales tax at reasonable prices these days?

Amazon only charges sales tax in the FIVE states where it has physical
facilities. NY, KS, WA and two other states I can't think of right now.

Amazon has just slashed the price of the 21.5" base iMac to $1,049. It was full price about an hour ago, but it has changed since then. Just ordered one.

Now if those were only the prices all the time. :p

The base iMac is a pretty good deal today.

amazon keeps changing their prices, so depending on time of day, the prices could be different.

the prices are correct as of right this moment.

Wow. A whole $5.00 off on a new wireless keyboard!

These savings are just amazing........................

I'm always amazed what you kids learn in Fanboy school. Compare Apple products with BMWs. Use words like "elegant" ,"Delicious" , and "sexy" to describe a computer.

...

I love my Macs, and luckily, I can afford them.

...
So you love your Macs but anyone who disagrees with how you think Apple should run their business is a "fanboy". Yeah, that makes sense.

I'm sure you're a business genius in your own mind, but Apple seems to be doing just fine without your sage advice.

Why should they when they can sell plenty of $700 computers for $1,000?
What's their incentive? Are they worried their devotees are going to buy an Asus? :D
Sure, if you prefer a Mac, what would be the compelling reason to buy an Asus? To save $300 every 2 or 3 years? If you use any significant portion of the iLife suite or you appreciate the superior quality of the screen, trackpad, keyboard and camera in a MacBook, then a $300 difference is more than justified. It's really a no-brainer to buy a Mac even from the most hardened economic perspective.

Also, you forgot to mention the 40%-50% of Mac sales going to first time buyers. Why are they buying a Mac instead of an Asus?

I know, I know, it's all very boring and reasonable when you leave out the stupid name-calling.

Saved $85 total on 2 items

Picked up Beats by Dre in ear headphones
and Parallels 5 for Mac
... I'd say, "Not Bad"

Amazon did have discounts today on i5's briefly, matching Apple's BF price, but it's now gone. I should have grabbed it when I had the chance. :(

Get a refurb as they go back to get the glass fixed. :D

Patience pays off. That's how I got my Late 2007 MacBook with my education discount and Leopard preinstalled.

Another smug Mac owner driving Honda Civic, not able to afford Mercedes but feeling superior because of this type of comparisons. Out of curiosity you might check some quality PCs like this HP machine for $7K:

We've actually got a couple of those, and they're pretty nice, but I do prefer the Mac Pro. Better design, doesn't feel as cheaply built as the HP does. The only reason we went with the Z800 for those specific applications is because we needed more than 32GB of RAM, and they're running Linux anyway.

Feature to feature the Mac Pro is cheaper too.

Speaking of Mac Pro's, anyone else surprised there were no discounts on these from Apple today? I know, it's not a "consumer" box, but still... you'd think they want to start decreasing inventory on them.

Nope, you're wrong: Amazon doesn't have physical facilities in NY, but does charge sales tax here.

Are you saying that you applied an educational discount to a refurbished machine?

HP Case designed by BMW

I am not personally familiar with either machine. However I read this on CNET:

---------------
BMW Designworks actually assisted with the industrial design of the new HP workstations. They're handsome machines, but not exactly pretty--certainly not in the way Apple's Mac Pro is.

More importantly, however, the HP-BMW design is functionally superior. In about the same case size as the Mac Pro, HP's Z800 has room for more RAM, more expansion cards, and more disk drives. BMW also worked handles into the design, and they work better than Apple's.

The difference in RAM is quite substantial. It isn't just about the slots (eight in the Mac Pro, twelve in the Z800)--but even more in the fact that HP supports 16GB dual in-line memory modules (DIMMs), while Apple's machine goes only up to 4GB per slot. That's 192GB for the HP and 32GB for the Mac.
