There's no reason to sound elitist,
Yes, but the truth of the matter is ever since the $1000 MacBook that so called elitist went out the door which was further compounded by the release of the iPhone, the split of ProCare and One to One to it's own entity, the lack of focus toward the Pro creative, Logic getting split in half with price yet the very long delays on any Pro software updates (I can't remember the last time aprature was updated),'combined with the lack of Pro workshops and training (as there are now many grow your own they call it, trainees that come from a specialist position, (anyone remember the one to one books?, ALL iLife), mixed that up with most trainers knowing no ProApps, and last but for sure not least, you have the 15" now missing the express slot which for musicians is hit on them, Apple has become a consumer based company that does very well but in terms of high end, Creative, they barey sell the Mac Pro's or 17" models and in Apple terms make most of their cash selling low end products, by their own definition while failing to Capitolize on the gamers, Prosumers with no mid range products. Better gpu's are needed throughout the entire line of macs, and the irony is that Apple is seen more main steam than ever, far from the days of the status symbol (which is a good thing), but they still have holes in their product line.

Well I did just order the following:

1 - VMWare Fusion 3 retail $49.99
2 - Western Digital 750GB SATA 3 7200 rpm $59.99 each
2 - Rosewill R2-JBOD USB 2.0 dual bay enclosures $34.99 each

However, I got this stuff all from NewEgg. Now I might get some RAM from NewEgg also 8GB (2 X 4GB) for $250. Cheaper than OWC and Apple. I've current got 8GB of NewEgg RAM that has been working flawlessly since 2007.

I am not personally familiar with either machine. However I read this on CNET:

---------------
BMW Designworks actually assisted with the industrial design of the new HP workstations. They're handsome machines, but not exactly pretty--certainly not in the way Apple's Mac Pro is.

More importantly, however, the HP-BMW design is functionally superior. In about the same case size as the Mac Pro, HP's Z800 has room for more RAM, more expansion cards, and more disk drives. BMW also worked handles into the design, and they work better than Apple's.

The difference in RAM is quite substantial. It isn't just about the slots (eight in the Mac Pro, twelve in the Z800)--but even more in the fact that HP supports 16GB dual in-line memory modules (DIMMs), while Apple's machine goes only up to 4GB per slot. That's 192GB for the HP and 32GB for the Mac.

Great. Good on HP and BMW. However, BMW designs automobiles, Apple designs computer system and electronics. From what I've seen of the HP, BMW should keep with automobiles.

So you love your Macs but anyone who disagrees with how you think Apple should run their business is a "fanboy". Yeah, that makes sense.

I'm sure you're a business genius in your own mind, but Apple seems to be doing just fine without your sage advice.

Speaking of Mac love... has anyone been able to get through to welovemacs? I've been on hold for over an hour.

So psyched! I picked up a base 21.5" iMac, a Mac Mini and two printers (99.95, hence free after MIR) today. Just very glad to get 50 dollars over the base price.

The items have shipped, although, all from Middletown PA. I thought that the iMac would ship from Shanghai. Wonder what's up with that. I really REALLY hope that APple isn't sending me a refurb. :-?

Amazon did a short run deal on the Apple MacBook MC207LL/A apparently because I snagged one around noon today for $849.99 and now it's back up to $999 already. Black Friday = Nonsense.

Steve-O jumps the shark!

Apple has had a good run over the last few years with iPod, iPhone & Mac OS, but overpriced and underpowered hardware coupled with Windows 7 being a good product, the hardware days for Apple have peaked, along with the iPod market. The iPhone has a couple of years left, but that's it.

When will the board send Steve packing...again? Or are their bets solely hepatic?

Did you read my post, where I said we went with the Z800 due to the need for more than 32GB of RAM?

Have you actually used both machines to develop a worthwhile opinion of them and a comparison resulting from that, or are you just going to post what C|Net says?

Yes, there is more RAM capacity. There are also (4) 3.5" bays inside, just like the MP. There are a couple more slots, though they aren't really in use on either machine, so pretty much a moot point. The additional 5.25" is kinda weird too; I've never used more than two, and haven't used more than one in over 5 years. I guess it's a selling point for some reason.

Here are the quickspecs for the Z800:

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/13278_div/13278_div.HTML#Overview

The MP is easier to work on in terms of getting RAM in and out, as well as drives. YMMV. The MP's we have mostly have 3 drives in them, 2TB a piece. We're not exactly hurting for space. The handle thing is very subjective; while the HP's handles are smoother, you can't grip them as well as you can the MP's. To each their own, I guess. All of the machines have the FX4800 in them, so that's a draw.

you could have said this years ago with XP or Vista....and look where we are today. also, have you even heard of the tablet rumors...

Not really though. Apple's quality seems to have dropped off sharply and Snow Leopard has some problems. It is so sluggish feeling and many crashes etc. Back when XP and Vista released Apple was still focusing on OSX and quality computers. Now they are focused on cheap consumer goods and all of the "pro" software and decent machines have fallen by the way side. The new iMacs look like a complete disaster (and despite the massive shortcomings of their all in one design, I still kinda want one. But I just couldn't bring myself to buy one considering how bad they apparently are) and yet the faithful are actually sticking up for the debacle. It's mind blowing.

Can you imagine what Apple fans would be saying if MS were doing the exact things that Apple currently is? Think about it. Instead, they cheer Apple's profit level (which is ironic, and insane).

most clients that have two to three 2 terabyte hard drives are normally editors with pipeline fiber optic Avid rack back up raid systems working on Youd be amazed at how fast these devices can fill up with green screen takes. And after effects. Stunning though. How the rooms that we see whereas the workstations are just "there" and the back up, fiber,xSan looks like Chritmas time. Lol

Peace.

Why would you align the words?

while it is true that Apple has much room for improvement and is certainly not infallible, your skills of exaggeration are incredible, sir.

The new iMac is a complete disaster? Really?

What is really mindblowing are the number of people here eager to drop the "fanboy" label on people as soon as they say something positive about Apple.....on an Apple-related site, no less.

I guess I don't get it? A Mac Mini is $500 (discounted) and comes with a 1 year warranty and 90 day phone support. Cheapest PC I've seen is $350 and comes with 30 day warranty and no phone support at all. The difference is $150 -- that's expensive?

Please no "I can build a PC myself for 1/2 as much..." yada, yada, yada -- so can I, but 95% of the computer population can't and/or doesn't want to do that.

Where did the iMac failure come from?? My wife has one, several friends have them -- I don't want to call them converts, because like many Mac owners, they use Windows OS also. Sounds like some people here are reading too much of the bad journalism that goes on at Tom's Hardware and the endless source of Windows fanboys that live there spewing their incorrect information about Macs. It boggles my mind that people post about hardware they've never ever owned or used regularly (no, pushing the mouse around at BestBuy or Apple store doesn't qualify one as a Mac user).

Fortunately the Leg Pumpers at Tom's Hardware don't represent the average computer consumer -- and if you look at recent hit count reports for Tom's Hardware -- it has nosed dived since August and is at an all time low. This is probably why the "writers/editors" at Tom's are trying to create PC vs. Apple debates just to bring up hit count for their advertisers.

Anyway, happy with my Black Friday purchases that I got thru NewEgg. Of course if you ask a Windows fanboy, they believe what I just did is impossible as Mac's can't be upgraded by anyone other than Apple.

I remember did the gimped support for a few months but I haven't seen them do it again unless it's a Linux/OSS machine they sell.

Otherwise their hardware comes standard with a 1 year limited warranty.

Rob

a mini doesn't come with a keyboard, mouse or monitor. a $399 desktop PC will come with everything you need. by the time you add a monitor, keyboard and mouse if you need them you might as well buy an iMac

Wow.

No, I am not in charge of this discussion, but the title was about discounts for a MAC. If I wanted to get into a marketing, automobile, design or financial discussion,I would have picked a topic that included some of those words.

Why is it so hard to stay on topic?

OK - let the flaming begin.

I just ordered an iMac from Macconnection. They extended Black Friday sales to midnight tonight. They are giving $150 off after $100 rebate. A big rebate and free shipping, I'm happy. :)
