Hopefully Apple can come up with a new lineup of cases built using different material.

I purchased before the release date and when I received it I was shocked at the poor quality. The interior bracket seems to be plastic, and the exterior is just plain shoddy. I've purchased better ones on Amazon. I was expecting a case that was somewhat like the cloth type that Amazon uses on their Kindles. I returned mine to the Apple Store when I picked up my new iPhone 15 Pro and purchased a silicon one. Very dissappointed with Apple on this one.

Well, on one hand, great efforts for recycling. On the other hand, there are a great many hides available due to love of beef (or sheep, pork, kangaroo) that can be used.

I am fairly certain Apple does not kill cattle, dispose of the beef and only use the hide to make iPhone and iPad covers . . .

We are still all playing along with this “Apple is environmentally friendly” fiction? I’m sorry but no consumer electronics company is environmentally friendly. Apples entire business model is built on non-upgradable phones being tossed in a landfill every 2 years. Claiming otherwise is just a fantasy. E-waste is Apple’s legacy, and “fine woven” cases are just more pieces of trash to get thrown in the dumpster.

And I love Apple. But can we please stop pretending that rampant consumerism will ever be environmentally friendly?

I'm not liking the two part texture on these "Fine woven" cases...makes them look and feel like those cheap after market cases you get to change the back panel of the case you get at the mall kiosk. I'll stick with my usual suspects Spigen and Apple Silicone cases.

Wait til they find out how Titanium is processed.

Seems like the biggest issue here is Apple tried to push this as a premium product for a premium price, and it very much isn’t, neither in build quality or finish. If Apple had pushed its eco-friendly aspects but priced it at the same if not lower price of the silicon cases I imagine we’d be seeing very little blowback other than folks who preferred the leather premium options.
But as they say, Apple gonna Apple.
Even the Apple silicone cases cost too much. It’s just up marketing bs. I’ll stick with 3rd party case makers. I’m pretty sure they will cover pentalobe screws for $20 lol

If you think leather is bad (it's really not compared to plastic production - particularly given the longevity of leather products), wait until you find out how Titanium is processed - especially compared to aluminum and steel.
Yeah fair enough. Titanium is a gimmick and doesn't really help their environmental goals.

But Apple seems to think they'll be net zero by 2030... not sure how they'll do that. Still, I can imagine that using 100% recycled metals vastly, vastly reduces CO2 emissions.

On the other hand, you can't reuse leather.

“We can take dirt cheap recycled materials and turn them into a case we can sell at 1000% percent profit? And virtue signal our eco-friendliness while we’re at it? And outsource the leather to Hermés to make even more profit from that? Let’s do it!”
The materials might be cheap, but the process to break them down and manufacture them into something new isn’t the same. I’m on board for reusing material, but consistency is an issue in the resource you’re using and it can create inconsistencies with the new product.

Not sure I’m going to buy one of these cases, but the last two leather cases I bought weren’t the greatest either. I think reasonable price could’ve been a better start, rather than it being carted out as a leather case replacement at the same price point. The silicone cases have been consistent from the 8 Plus to the 13 Pro Max for me. Not so much the leather after the 11 Pro.

Did their product development team not just grab one of the test units and scratch it with a fingernail or set of keys?
100%
This is the type of thing which I find totally unbelievable.

You are telling me that the 100's ? Of people who were involved in this process, along with the actual final real-world testers who would give the green light to proceed with giving this the green light, NEVER once noticed how easy it would mark?
They never put in into a handbag / pocket with keys, a few coins / anything, rubbed their nail across it, and noticed how it instantly showed marks that could not be removed.

It actually scares me in a way that you can pay (I assume) very intelligent and clever people so much money working for Apple and they miss THE most basic of potential issues with a product.

Right now they have effectively made an official case, which needs putting itself into secondary 3rd party case to stop it getting damaged.

The skins exist anyway and turning them into leather stores the carbon rather than letting them rot. Recycling plastic uses an enormous amount of energy to collect, transport, sort, reprocess into raw plastics, transport again, and manufacture into new products. If there are longevity and durability issues with the plastic products, then you need to multiply the environmental cost for each new product consumed.

People don't want to know actual numbers, they just want to feel good. Apple is one of the absolute worst companies when it comes to anything environmental - largely because of their planned obsolescence strategies and lack of repairability. I don't really care that much about it, but I absolutely care that they pretend the exact opposite is true.

Net zero is a myth. It always takes energy to do the things you claim are going to reduce emissions. Those environmental costs and emissions are just hidden in the mining/processing/transport/manufacturing processes for the Solar/wind/EV/tree planting/whatever you're trying to do - particularly around end of life for all of those things.

You cannot consume your way to 'net zero'. The most environmentally friendly solution is always to make what you have last as long as possible.

1. Reduce
2. Reuse
3. Recycle

In that order.

Oh the hardship we have to deal with while saving the world from global warming!

No one is saving anyone from anything. Leather will still be made even if Apple isn't the buyer. But now Apple are ALSO producing large amounts of plastic - at least 30% of which is virgin - on a product that will last less than a year.

They've added to the problem while claiming to solve it. I think people have a right to call out Apple for their green-washing BS.

I bought one. It left just as fast as it arrived. They are "ok", but defo not worth that much money. I sent mine back because it came dirty (several dirt marks).

This guy has been featured in the past I believe on MacRumors and he’s independent and not sponsored.

His review of Fine Woven like many of his reviews really shows you if something is worth the price.

Edit: This guy has been around for over ten years and frequently does drop tests in different cases to show real world results.

I don’t always go with his top picks but I do always stay away from the bad products he identifies.
I always watch his youtube programme before buying a new case , this time I bought Mous case for iPhone 15
