imo, they do not want to anger the vegetarians and vegans of the world...

Were vegans and vegetarians complaining about the leather cases Apple has been using for the last decade?

I don’t think I have ever seen a “leather protest march” outside of any Apple store or anything…..

Besides, there are all sorts of vegan leathers out there, made from things like cactus, if the goal really was to make the leather vegan.

Oh wow, these are just a plastic case with some memory foam cloth on the rear to help break the glass back easier?
So it's not even gonna fulfil its function AND it will make the thing overheat faster (memory foam...).
Oof

Any day now some 3rd party will offer a service to remove the Pro's rear glass and glue in a plastic/carbon-fibre plate that wraps around the outer frame so it protects the front glass as well. They could probably offer it for free basically if you're giving them the original rear glass in exchange.

Did their product development team not just grab one of the test units and scratch it with a fingernail or set of keys?
No need. Just bloody use them for a month as part of the usual quality control before giving a green light to start mass production. If there is any sign of wear or marks after just one month, it is obvious that the product is not good enough. It is beyond easy, it is just basic thing to do. What is even worst is that Apple is actually scamming its customers, because anyone paying 59$ for Apple's own cases is expecting supreme quality, and instead receives artificial composite trash. Some (most of) Apple products are insulting expensive, but at least you receive the best product money can buy. With this product, Apple is easily earning a 5,000% profit margin while delivering something is even far from being mediocre.

I don't mine the change. I wish the price was in the 30-40 range. I always purchased the leather ones mainly because the buttons felt like the ones on the phone and the case wasn't bulky or too grippy like the silicone ones.
For a such bad quality product, even putting it in every iPhone box as a free accessory seems expensive. Don't know where you came with the 30-40 range being anything fair for this.

It’s a disgrace. If I paid $10 for their case I’d still be bitterly disappointed.

Uh, I don't think this is really true.
Their repairability sucks for people wanting to do their own repairs, but Apple offers in-house repairs for devices up to 7 years old!
As for planned obsolescence, sure there is some involved, but Apple is by far ahead of the curve when it comes to balancing security and compatibility, at least in the smartphone world. Try finding a single Android phone that gets 7 years of OS updates and security support.
We can always demand better, but honestly they are so far ahead of the competition.
Besides, Apple has basically eliminated as much wasteful material as they can; compare recyclable aluminium to the plastic junk the PC world is using, not to mention the power-hungry Intel processors they use and their beefy power supplies.
People criticised the M1 iMac for being pointlessly thin, but it serves a major advantage by 1. reducing volume, and 3. recycling.

Yeah, but it's kind of ridiculous to demand a company to stop manufacturing entirely. Unless Apple found a way to make its business 99% services, keeping their hardware identical for years and only doing software enhancements, they cannot be net zero, sure. But even then, software is actually extremely harmful to the environment too, through the electricity usage of data centers.

So why does Apple claim to be able to achieve 'Net Zero' or even attempt it. It's not possible.

Apple doesn't care about recycling. Aluminum with glass and other electronic components glued to it is not recyclable easily or inexpensively. They also don't care about reducing carbon emissions. It's all about feelings.

Titanium is one of the most energy intensive, least recyclable and environmentally unfriendly metals to work with - especially compared to aluminum or steel. Any gains they claim they're making by scrapping leather is immediately outweighed by the use of titanium, and when you throw in the use of 100% plastic finewoven cases (which are at least 30% virgin plastic), it's clear that Apple is completely full of crap.

They are usually the ones setting the trends toward less environmentally friendly practices - like gluing batteries into laptops, or Soldering SSDs into the motherboard so they can never be upgraded or replaced to extend the life of a product. They're not at all ahead of their competition on environmental impact, their marketing and PR team are just ahead of the competition at making people like you believe they are.

The materials might be cheap, but the process to break them down and manufacture them into something new isn’t the same. I’m on board for reusing material, but consistency is an issue in the resource you’re using and it can create inconsistencies with the new product.

Not sure I’m going to buy one of these cases, but the last two leather cases I bought weren’t the greatest either. I think reasonable price could’ve been a better start, rather than it being carted out as a leather case replacement at the same price point. The silicone cases have been consistent from the 8 Plus to the 13 Pro Max for me. Not so much the leather after the 11 Pro.

I've got no problem with recycled materials, and it occurred to me after posting that they might not be as cheap as I thought. But whatever it's made out of it seems this one isn't going over well.

I agree the leather case quality was far lower than I expected as well. I guess my real point is that regardless what material they're using, Apple's cases are not a very good value pretty much whichever way you slice it. They look good, until they meet the real world when they start to immediately disintegrate. And worst of all they don't actually protect the phone. So they don’t do their one job.

"High Quality Carbon Credits." Notice they were careful to say that phrase at least twice. Apparently it's an accepted concept that you can plant trees to offset your pollution. Not sure that's quite true. It's definitely better than not planting trees. I think they are using some creative accounting to make it zero out, though.

Well, on one hand, great efforts for recycling. On the other hand, there are a great many hides available due to love of beef (or sheep, pork, kangaroo) that can be used.

I am fairly certain Apple does not kill cattle, dispose of the beef and only use the hide to make iPhone and iPad covers . . .

I'll take one kangaroo hide case, please.

Actually when I say it like that it makes me not want a leather case.

"Give me the one that had the biggest doe eyes."

I do love meat but if I had to kill it myself every time I would probably eat a whole lot less.

I don’t mind the case at all. But this mis-aligned USBC cut out would explain why the majority of USBC cables I have other than the Apple one are a ‘snug’ fit. It doesn’t feel good plugging them in. The included apple usb cable is fine as the head part of the cable is smaller then others.

The issue is scale. Apple sell 250+ million phones a year. How long before the world runs out of Cactus ?

I live near those carbon credits location. 50% of my house is surrounded by them. When I asked about them there’s no information it’s considered private enterprises. But then after digging deeper I found out these are carbon neutral trees. But the problem These Stupid greedy owners don’t care and they let weeds and everything else overrun the land because they’re making money on it and they can’t chop down these trees because they’re making lots of money per month with them. These things are a pain in the ass.

They’re usually too weak to manage a proper protest. (it’s a joke dammit)

I think the most disappointing thing with these cases is that they could have come up with a way cooler material or design that’s BOTH environmentally friendly and attractive but instead, they picked something that’s rather timid and bland…. like Tim Cook. And the color selections are awlful.

I've had the taupe case for a week and a bit, on a phone since Friday. No concern. Buttons are responsive. Good grip on the side of the case, it isn't going to slip. Finewoven material isn't making any strange noise going in to a pocket, and looks fine.
