Well I would hope to say that 'silent' implied for 'vibrate'... After all if silent simply turned off the ringer then what would be the difference between 'silent' and 'off'?

Dave

Why do you guys want vibrate so much

iGasm!

You know the ones you get now for the current iPod that increases battery life by %60. It's a mod because you crack open the case and put in a different battery.

Yeah but whos going to be brave enough to do that to a $600/$500 Phone still on contract?

Yeah, waiting for the data plan info as well. Then to convince the significant other that we both need iphones. Cant get one without getting her one.

I don't know why anyone would think it doesn't have a Sim slot. When you buy the phone, you have take your sim card (which stores your number) and place it somewhere in the iPhone.

It's common sense.

If you turned it off it wouldn't light up when somebody called, and it wouldn't receive texts or emails, and you wouldn't be able to use the video functions of the iPod etc. etc. etc.

That arrow isn't pointing to anything except for a plastic case without any visible way to access the internals. I'm guessing that's been causing the confusion...

That is the proto type case picture. There will be a SIM slot because that is how Cingular rolls.
I don't know about you guys, but I am not taking this phone off-roading, camping, boating, etc. So I will need to pull the SIM out and stick it in a cheap phone.

Who claimed that it would lack a SIM card tray ? A SIM card is required for a GSM phone.

My in laws have such a phone in Germany - GSM without an exposed SIM card tray. I personally would prefer the SIM to be easily accessible. A user replaceable battery would also be nice. Don't get me wrong, the iPhone still seems like an awesome phone.

I thought Steve put that rumor to rest at Macworld?

Perhaps that tiny hole next to the earphone jack is something that opens the phone for inserting the SIM card (and replacing the battery?). I mean, there must be a way to fairly easily replace the SIM card. Take me, for example. I already have an AT&T phone with a recent ("3G" they called it) SIM card and a phone number I want to keep, I assume we will be taking out my existing SIM card and sticking it in the new phone right there in the store. That's what they do with other phones...

Although that said, it must have vibrate. If it doesn't I'm not getting one. I'm always getting text messages I need to read while in meetings, so vibrate is a must.

May the "Requires internet connection" hint to online activation? Unlikely, I know, but wouldn't it be nice to be able to walk into the store, pick up an iPhone, buy it as if you were buying an iPod, and walk out? :D

Same for me when I get a text in class I put my phone on vibrate and the teacher doesn't know any better, unless the teacher walks by and sees me with it in which case they confiscate the phone! Trust me if that happends they can be expected to lose a hand.

Hmm maybe its to download updates and iTunes incase you don't have it. Ipod nano and iPod shuffle say they require an internet connection.

No Sim tray?

What you mean it would be fixed - non replaceable like the batteries ( which sucks )? That would make the iPhone a laughing stock.

I smell another :apple: TV-like competition coming on.

In theory any SIM card put into a GSM phone will work as a phone. What does not work across carriers is things like email, Web, MMS, and in the case of iPhone one would assume Visual Voicemail.

So if your a Tmobile player, and you someone get your hands on an iPhone, sure you can use it as a phone and an iPod, but the phone will be crippled until someone figures out a true "unlock" which I say will be unlikely.

my 2 cents...

i cannot imagine apple would leave that feature out, it is almost a given, I would almost guarantee it will be included.

so many people wouldn't buy without vibrate - silent mode is useless without it, so it is a deal clincher.

I'm just disappointed by the lack of a SD slot.

Rather then putting movies/music on the internal drive, I'd much prefer to hot swap movies that are on SD cards:(

Really ? I never saw such a thing. Anything is possible I guess :)

I always thought that a removable SIM was part of the GSM spec.

not apple's style at all. that would be a microsoft move, apple go for simplicity and elegance. a device that does it all with no extra clutter, thats the idea, i just wish the configs were 8gb and 16gb instead.
