Why do you need WiFi N?

That's my only complaint about the iPhone. Otherwise it's a wonderful device.

Why complain about this? WiFi N gives you 250 mbits of speed...but not even Verizon Fios exceeds 75mbits/second...so why in the world isn't WiFi G plenty for the iPhone? You won't be doing any kind of massive data transfer...just web browsing. Geez...get some perspective.

On the other hand, it does suck that it can't handle N because that means it won't be able to be used on wireless networks that are N-only being at 5+ Ghz.

Oh well, you can't win 'em all...

The Sony Ericsson T610 always worked on both Cingular/AT&T and T-Mobile. It's bands are 900/1800/1900MHz. Because T-Mobile doesn't have the 850 band, it was pointless for them to wait for the T616 with 850 to come to market.
Yes, on closer study you are right, it seems that was more a local issue in my area. Cingular was 850mhz only, and AT&T Wireless and T-Mobile were 1900mhz where I live.

In fact, T-Mobile and Cingular ran a network together until Cingular acquired AT&T (Wireless). At which point T-Mobile took over Cingular's part of the shared 1900mhz network. I wonder if this is why my reception got much better around town a couple years ago.

Cingular/AT&T has both the 850MHz and 1900MHz bands.
Not so much anymore. Cingular decommissioned the 1900mhz AT&T Wireless network in many areas. There's stories on the net about customers who were forced to buy replacement phones out of pocket because they didn't have handsets that supported the 850mhz band, and Cingular was treating them like second class citizens at the time. There's also accusations Cingular deliberately let the 1900mhz network deteriorate in many places to get people to switch.

T-Mobile only uses the 1900MHz band, but many of its phones support roaming onto competing networks' 850Mhz band in the United States.
The 900Mhz and 1800Mhz bands are not used in the US or Canada.
I know an area in northern Wisconsin that is in Alltel's territory, they're a CDMA carrier, but they have an 850Mhz GSM network they maintain for a roaming agreement with Cingular as well. And since my T-Mobile phone is actually an unlocked Cingular phone, I was able to get roaming service while I was up there recently. Pretty freaky.

Interesting. I was not aware of this, but thanks for pointing it out.

I've read many debates online about both the 1900MHz and 850Mhz GSM bands. It surprises me that they would let their 1900 towers go. I'm not sure what the pros/cons are for each band, but from my experience the addition of 850 in Canada really boosted RF in urban areas, especially when it came to building penetration.

It was something that hit some areas harder than others. There was even a lawsuit. It was something to be expected I would think. Cingular buys out a competitor with separate infastructure, they would just see the network as another piece of redundancy they need to trim, just like the AT&T Wireless technicians, customer care reps, and middle management.

I never saw much of a benefit to having a 1900mhz frequency carrier, except that I could have one of those nifty Scandinavian handsets imported that we don't have available here (which might be a blessing, considering T-Mobile doesn't know the meaning of the term "smartphone" unless the word "Sidekick" is used). All it really meant for me was I got lousy reception lots of places Cingular worked fine.

OK, name me 2 phones with multitouch & movie playing & 4GB HD on the market by the end of this month.

My T-mobile Wing has a touch screen, can play movies, and I have heard some people getting a 4GB MicroSD card to work (I don't know cause I only own a 2GB card) ... a JasJar or TyTn phone would be able to do this too... point there are plenty of phones that can compare to the iPhone

he said with MULTItouch screen and a 4gb HD, not touch and a memory card... big difference, this is what will mke the iPhone sell

And in what circumstances would a woman share a home and a life with you not care where you spent money that (supposedly) supports the both of you? I think you're naive or terribly immature.

I think caring and asking permission are very different things.

I realize most people in the USA have been trained differently than me, that's ok. I am someone who wants my own bed and actually bedroom when/if I decide to marry. Then again, it's become a dirty little secret no one discusses but happening more and more. I imagine some people will find this article shocking, i think it's great! http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/11/us/11separate.html?ex=1181534400&en=8b290978a409e4c0&ei=5070.

It better have vibrate

Here's how it works, Apple:

No vibrate function on the iPhone, no purchase from me. Plain and simple.

I am constantly in loud environments (convention halls, airports, clubs & bars, etc.)... if the phone is in my pocket and it doesn't have vibrate on it, then I won't be able to tell if an incoming call or text msg is coming in.

It's bad enough that Apple doesn't support push email like the Blackberry (except with Yahoo email accounts), but now they're thinking about releasing a phone without a vibrate function?

This iPhone better have vibrate on it. If not, not only will I not be purchasing one, but Apple will get raked over the coals in the media regarding this serious omission.

Does it vibrate? or is there just a ringer and silent option.

I don't know, I would hope it would have a vibrate mode. Although could you imagine watching a movie and "Buzzzzzz!", the iPhone shakes and knocks itself off a cardio machine or desk it was resting on? lol That would suck (although I'm sure in video mode there would have to be a mandatory or optional silent/ring mode only if it had a vibrate option).

LOL!!! That's hilarious.

Multi-touch - gorgeous - ipod - phone - true internet

there is NOTHING that compares with this piece of kit.

There maybe devices that claim to have similar features but they'll be clunky, ill-conceived and difficult to use to the point of worthlessness ( LG Prada a great case in point).

To claim that 'comparable feature set' is the only valid comparison is to miss the point of APPLE and the iPhone completely. Apple are only doing 'perfectly' what the rest of the world do so badly - that's it...

Let's face it there's nothing that even compares with an Apple ipod/itunes pairing never mind all the other stuff!...

I really believe that any speculation ( even perhaps mine), is just hot air until each individual person has used it - becuase then and only then will the ( I hope) sheer magnificence and the 2.5 years of hard work show itself in all it's glory.

Seriously if this were anyone other than Steve Jobs ( father of the macintosh - co-founder of the personal computer revolution that we all live by today) then I'd be skeptical but come on - this is Steve Jobs here about to deliver his finest product in 30 years...

I have utter faith and so does the stock market apparently!..

Please keep an open mind and you may just find something wonderful has been created to make your digital world so much better..

:)

Seriously??? This is about the iPhone, not someone's personal life. What they do in the comfort of their own homes or how they life their life with their partner shouldn't be under question.

Oh, and I just read that NYTime link, that is a bit sad. As someone who loves sleeping with my partner (when I am in a relationship lol), I enjoy cuddling and being next to someone the most. If our way of life and technology are changing that (and it already is making us more socially distant with our text messaging and online activities it seems less of us are inclined to go out for physical social contact), then what is next? So sad....

You know the ones you get now for the current iPod that increases battery life by %60. It's a mod because you crack open the case and put in a different battery.

and then you void the warranty. For a $499 or $599 phone, I'll try to avoid doing that...

*shrugs* That's all fine and dandy. Whatever floats your boat, man. Personally, I don't have a problem sleeping next to the woman I swore to cherish until death do us part, but you might have a bit more "business-like" arrangement. Glad you managed to overcome your "training" and find true happiness, or whatever.

But most of us married folk are in relationships where we not only sleep together but even have a shared bank account. And, mind you, a bank account that's not always many thousands of dollars on the + side. We have things called budgets, which determine how, when, and where we're going to spend our money.

Not consulting your significant other does nothing but cause problems. What if she's making a big purchase too?

What good does it possibly do to value the gratification of one individual above the relationship? You've just shown that you can't control yourself, that you're more interested in toys than your long-term financial goals (and whatever goals that your finances enable in the long-term), and that you have some strange desire to prove your independence by maintaining final control over an illusory portion of the household finances.

Sorry, dude. Healthy relationships don't work that way. Marriages can end pretty damned quickly when the partners withhold, even in small matters. Hope you get a pre-nup.

First, Apple supports push IMAP. I am pretty sure that is not limited to Yahoo.

Second, the iPhone does have vibrate.

Uh, it'll have vibrate, what phone since 1997 doesn't have vibrate.

I actually prefer push IMAP on my nokia than the blackberry connect client. It supports both on the device.

Blackberry accounts are limited by mailbox size, and i'm constantly deleting emails.

Thank you, Apple, for understanding that vibrate mode is a MUST. I can live without a videocamera on my phone, but I MUST have vibrate mode.

Why would anyone even question that? Come on people, use some common sense. Nobody is going to build a mobile phone in this day and age without vibrate.

Skype?

I know AT&T want calls to be paid for... But would Skype work on the iPhone, in theory at least?

(And as a follow-on from the comment above mine, the Nokia N-93, as far as a friend of mine has experienced, and their website fails to mention silent or vibrate, so, no vibrate... Take a look: http://www.nokiausa.com/phones/N93/0,7747,feat:1,00.html - odd really! Then, I ran a check on 6 expensive, new Nokia phones using their own comparison chart on the Nokia website - 4 had no vibrate...)

Wow that 16 hours of audio playback sounds awesome, i'm surprised it's that high... with phone usage and stuff it's probably closer to 8-11 i'd guess but really thats still damn good especially in comparison to already on the market music phones!

Skype could work, but it would have to be over Wifi. There's no way EDGE could support the bandwidth needed for Skype.
