This is going to sound made up, but I know the previous Apple TV product manager. Development has not ceased. He won't tell me what's coming; only that we can expect something.

Sounds as though a new model will be coming out as per the analyst
at Pacific Crest. One with possible BR support and an included DVR of
some sort. September 9th maybe.

And sorry, but when you have 1000's of episodes of shows and movies you are not going to go through and tag each one. No way.

Just because you're too lazy to properly organize your library - doesn't mean the rest of us are. I have over 10,000 titles in my iTunes library - every one is properly tagged. Which makes navigating through AppleTV and iTunes a joy. Have fun with crappy PS3 cross-media bar interface and folders circa 2001.

Keep saying the ATV > than the PS3 all you want. Cost per feature, ATV loses every time. And as I said I loved my ATV until I got a PS3 recently and realized how much the ATV actually sucked. You just haven't been enlightened yet.

Don't make me laugh. I have had PS3 since it originally came out - hacked the heck out of it. Had Yellow Dog Linux running on it and the whole nine yards. PS3 a fine gaming machine, but a mediocre media extender in my opinion, and it has nothing on Apple TV.

Anyway as I said before - this thread (and forum) has nothing to do with PS3. You like PS3 better? Great, but honestly I could care less. So let's get back on topic of Apple TV, shall we?

I love my Apple TV

I just wish they would add an App Store and the ability to directly read off of the Time Capsule, but the latter is not as much of an issue anymore since I got a new MacBook Pro with a hard drive I can fit everything on. The App Store would improve the capabilities two-fold just as it has on the iPhone and then make the new Internet TVs with widgets pointless. I'm hoping for a firmware upgrade or preferably a hardware upgrade on September 9th.:D

P.S. It's not getting discontinued by any means... Remember Apple said they would continue to invest in it?

Fine, lets let the popularity of the ATV speak for itself

The PS3 has practically no interface for viewing media. It doesn't support folders, AAC/MPEG-4 tags, metadata or artwork, etc. There's no music store, podcast support, YouTube or Flickr integration either. In fact, there's no PSN movie/TV show store in any other region except the United States. I believe some parts of Europe are getting a movie-only store soon.

My external hard drive has two folders inside:
-Movies
-TV Shows

Within each folder are other folders that break out the selections within Movies and TV Shows. Every TV shows has its own folder and every season inside has its own folder. So don't tell me PS3 doesn't support folders.

In my opinion, for the average joe the PS3 is quicker and easier to use. No hacking, no installing, no syncing libraries, don't have to add everything to itunes, and full out of the box capabilities. You can take your PS3 right out of the box and play any movie file you may have on it right away. For most people this is superior and easier. I never said the ATV was bad, it just needs an update (ITS SO OUTDATED!!!!)

So don't tell me PS3 doesn't support folders.

Sigh.

Those are folders that you created yourself via a computer on your external hard drive.

Try copying your movie to the PS3 hard drive. It doesn't have folders except the default "group" options. Oddly enough, the PSP just got true folder support in the latest update. So, maybe it'll come to the PS3 someday. However, the PSP got iTunes tagging support for AAC files over a year ago and we still haven't seen that on the PS3.

I do give Sony props for the cool scene search though.

Here (Sorry for the crappy pictures, iPhone's camera was handy):

Poor logic. He's saying that sales-wise the AppleTV is a disaster. And he's right. Check the numbers.

Bit of a pointless argument as Apple haven't released any numbers. All you have to go on is few Analyst estimates, which i thought were pretty optimistic.

Point is no one is selling media extenders by the million, it's all in the hundreds of thousands. That's right i'm including PS3 and xbox 360, because its a tiny percentage of those that get setup with a PC to stream media.

Hence the 'hobby' tag applies to everyone, not just aapl.

Lets get back on topic, which was if there's such a shortage of ATV's what the frak is going on?

I realize this, but I was trying to compare the external HDD for the PS3 to the synced itunes (from a computer) to the ATV. I doubt everyone saves movies, music, pictures to their ATV so I would say most sync their itunes library to them. In my eyes I can make my external HDD as organized as itunes for viewing movies, pictures and music on my PS3. It takes a minute to transfer a movie to my external HDD and then I simply plug it into my PS3, where I can play it instantly, without load times or syncing issues.

Just thought this was interesting. Go to the Apple Store and pick on Apple TV. You can't pick which one to buy. This is after the "Snow Leopard" store update.

Add to that:
-Netflix support
-Hulu Support
-DVR capibiiities with a guide (maybe integrated service with MMe)
-Better Remote than just the crappy little Mac one.
-Blu Ray player (ripper??) or at least a DVD player
-Services like PLEX. I like how you can get internet plug ins to get content from different websites all in one interface.

No. None of this will happen if you really think about what the appletv is and how it fits in with the corporate strategy.

Netflix and hulu take money out of apple's pocket via iTunes sales. Not going to happen.

Dvr? Maybe, but there are many intricacies and the cannibalizing aspect that tell me this is unlikely. How will this investment on apple's part make them money against the iTunes losses?

Better remote? Hello? Update your appletv lately? That's just ignorance.

Bluray or DVD player doesn't belong in the appletv (if you look at things from the perspective of apple's product line). It belongs in the iTunes "server". The latter seems to be a given considering the leaks.

Plex? What would Apple themselves sponsoring an alternate interface say? Never.

As to the other thoughts, yes, I think a bump in processing power is logical: it allows for 1080 processing, a more responsive interface, and allows appletv apps controllable with the remote software on iPhones and touches (ever notice that the control screen acts much like a wii controller??)

Additional codecs? Yes, that would be nice, but seeing as a vanilla system can't play some without perian (a third party solution), I don't think this will happen.

As to the potential refresh itself, if iTunes allows bluray, it's logical that the key platforms interacting with the content would as well: imacs, mac pros, macbook pros, maybe the minis, and the appletv. But would all this happen in September (typically a small iPod-focused event)? This would seem to be a major product line refresh, right?

Nonetheless, if Steve Jobs is coming back to do the keynote, they may save up enough pomp and circumstance to make it huge...

If they offered a simplistic SDK that allowed web widgets and services like Hulu/iPlayer to build their own channel with whatever codec/drm suited them i think we'd see a huge take off in AppleTV sales.

Not saying it would be likely, just that if you were more interested in the income from hardware sales than the pittance the iTunes store brings in, that'd be the way i'd go.

Wow your right, it looks to me like you cant even buy one. There is defiantly a refresh coming soon. I cant think of any new features that I want though, except the ability to stream directly from a server, rather than a running copy of iTunes.

Brave prediction (thinking further about the above):
-Steve Jobs does the keynote
-Bluray support is announced for iTunes
-Bluray is added to the entire desktop line (as an option at the least)
-Bluray is not added to the portable line yet, will by the end of the year (Nov)
-Appletv hardware update to support 1080p content
-Entire iPod line updated for size but not style

Now, it's time to wait.... :)

With the references to bluray in iTunes appearing, i suspect what they are referring to is 'bluray managed copies'.

This means that from an internet linked bluray player you can copy a version of the movie to a portable device for playback.

This would be fantastic addition for an enhanced AppleTV, ie. either copying a bluray disk to the AppleTV hard drive or streaming from an iTunes media Server...

I'm not entirely sure on the technical limitations, resolution, audio options etc, but i'm wicked keen to find out.

This is great news that the Apple TV is not available for purchase!

A smell a refresh coming.:D Finally!

I just selected a 160GB AppleTV in the uk store and it allows me to get all the way to the check out with a delivery of 24hrs... :(

It may have been a glitch....

US store is still not letting me pick anything. Could just be a glitch. Could mean something coming today, in 2 weeks, or never. I just hope they do something. I want to buy another one and I'm getting tired of waiting! If they don't refresh it, I will probably spend a week researching Mac Mini and Plex, but I think I'll end up with another 40 gig ATV.
