And if you went up to someone with a PS3 or 360 and showed them how to use it as a media extender, not one of those people would buy a Apple TV. Especially with Netflix integration in the 360.

Exactly its not a plug n play operation. as long as you need to go through this faff http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/extender/setup/default.mspx

Or find a reliable DLNA server for PS3 and a good supply of video files that PS3 borks on for no apparent reason.

AppleTV may be a walled garden in that you can only use certain codecs. At least their implementation is consistent, reliable and simple to setup.

Their remote is naff and like all the rest they need more and compelling content, but the hope is that Apple is working on both these problems.

Certainly the number of AppleTV patents filed in the last two years would seem to imply its not dead yet.

Obviously you have never set up a 360 to stream from Vista or Win7. Its the same as setting up an Apple TV. Turn on the 360, enter a 6 digit code on the Vista/Win7 PC to pair the 360 and your done. And Win7 allows the 360 to play almost every codec, it trancodes the video it can't play on the fly. MKV's/M4V's/MP4/AVI/MOV all play on the 360.

I hadn't got the chance to setup a 360 against a newer windows so that's interesting. Though i have had a chance to play with transcode 360 and the native windows 7 transcoding. To say these formats all play is a bit disingenous. The truth is sometimes and always with degraded audio. Forget 5.1.

transcode 360 is a bit better and has been around in the market a little longer, but on the fly transcoding is not a realistic solution. Either transcode ahead of time or install native codecs.

As i'm sure it's been mentioned in this thread, perian is a beautiful thing and you'll pull my AppleTV from my cold dead fingers before i use my PS3 as a media extender or worse buy living room jumpjet noise simulator.

Seriously this is an Apple forum, in a thread regarding a potential new AppleTV and all you whiners are doing is bitching about how the current one doesn't do this or that and how one of the consoles works for you. Whoop dee doo. I'm happy for you, now fork off and let us get back on topic.

The shortcomings of the AppleTV are the topic. Hence the reason we all want it updated.

Sorry, but I don't want my desktop to do transcoding for me. Thats going to use up cpu. What if your using the computer and your kids or wife are watching movies? Not really practical. Thats why I stopped using my 360 for streaming.
