I don't understand how it's such a shock to anyone that midnight would show fingerprints. Have you ever used a Lenovo Thinkpad? A Microsoft Surface Laptop in matte black? They all show fingerprints. If it's a problem, you have two options: 1) don't buy it; 2) wipe the fingerprints off. Geez.

Sadly, inevitable problem with dark surfaces but surely a solvable one in this day and age. Akin to slippery iPhone problem?

I’ve actually spoken to an Apple representative about this issue and he’s pretty high up and told me not to tell anyone but apparently the fingerprint issue on the midnight colour alone was done “deliberately” because it forces Apple to upgrade the paint job and charge consumers more to rectify it, upwards of £350-£500 more ($420) once the new paint job is applied to newer machines in the future. I was also told the midnight colours fingerprint issue is also a secret security device because if it gets stolen the police can just scan it in and see who’s stolen it by looking at the fingerprints on the machine. The only way around this is if the burglar uses gloves to handle it or wipes the fingerprints off the machine before the police arrive. There is a small chance however of your prints being on the machine still and you could be accused of stealing your own machine

This sounds like fiction. Completely nonsense.

Hmm, interesting, to say the least. Not sure I can be vested in those remarks...

Sounds to me like your source may be more ‘high’ than “high up”.

What's passing for "Apple representative" here?

Some rando with an Apple sticker on their Vanagon at the state park?

That's all a bunch of total conspiracy theory nonsense, no offense to you meant at all.

I’m seeing numerous posts about the Midnight M2 Air gathering fingerprints and people who are borderline manic regarding this issue and how disgusted they are that the machine will have fingerprints on it if ( god forbid) they touch it.
Do people wish for some sort of levitation device to be incorporated by Apple and some special gloves provided with each purchase?
Apple should seriously refuse to accept returns on the basis people want a refund or an exchange because of finger marks. It’s a seriously pathetic reason to return something and is up there with the time my mate purchased The Simpsons Skateboarding from Woolworths on the PS2 and took it back an hour later demanding his £40 back because it was the “crappiest game ive ever played” and he got banned from the shop and told to p off by management. In fact I hope Apples management do this and start being more ruthless and nuclear towards their customers and make their future models even more likely to get fingerprints just to prove a point and charge vast amounts of money to make it fingerproof. At the end of the day we all want nice looking tech but people buy MacBooks or computers for a purpose, it’s not an ornament to observe it’s a tool to be used to help you study or used for work purposes and that’s it, nobody I ever knew fell in love with a laptop because months later something better and more powerful emerges and we all get bored of things too quickly.
plus I can guarantee after a week the finger marks won’t even matter to you anymore.
Just buy it in Silver or Space Grey and use the machine for its intended purpose.
How do you think anyone besides me would know how many people are returning their MBA? Smh.

If anyone believes this, I feel sorry for them. Nice trolling attempt.

It does make sense though, if you watch Tomorrow Never Dies the media mogul Elliott Carver purposely releases crummy software which forces people to upgrade for years and spend more money. Apples logic here would be deliberately not making the coating fingerprint proof or scratchproof because then it allows them to do it on the next release , upgrade the coatings but charge customers a high premium or a 100% markup for what would otherwise be a cheap and simple solution. He was smoking a colossal blunt when he told me about the fingerprint marks showing being a security device though ….

I had one on order but before I got it went to the store to see the blue and the starlight side by side in the store after all the Chik Fila fingers were all all over them from customers. I will say the blue looked literally disgusting but that wasn't what made me change my order to Starlight. Not only are the fingerprints bad but it's a dust collector too. Between that, the possibility of chips I thought it best to order a lighter color knowing it would make me unhappy over the long term.

I didn't return mine, just swapped an order I hadn't received yet. There are clear matte skins for this laptop that are an option too for those who really want the blue.

Yes, this is absolutely correct. I know because Steve Jobs told me the same thing last night and not to tell anyone.

Yeah but those machines you’re seeing are probably in Apple stores where they get fingered on a daily basis

Edit - apologies if that sounds rude but you know what I mean. Peoples hands over the machine
The good thing is that I don’t like the blue in the color much anyway. If it were completely black, I may make an exception and deal with the prints and constant wiping.
