Only the Nexus / Pixel phones remain smooth as butter and flowing water 6+ months on. The OnePlus phones are smooth for a long time too.

Samsung LOL not. LG nope.

HTC phones are pretty smooth, as are Motorola phones.

But Samsung just blows, Lagwiz sucks.
What a load of baloney, I have access too two Samsung devices, a s6 edge and a Galaxy tab S, both the best part of 2 years old, they both run as good today as the day they were unboxed, which is slick and smooth.

My OnePlus One is still blazing along no trouble. It hugely helps with Android if you either buy a device with vanilla Android or something close to it, or that you flash custom firmware like LineageOS on.

OnePlus 5 on its way to me. Really hope it doesn't suffer from that jelly scrolling shenanigans.

Dude. Good luck. Just returned mine. No jelly but I had the wifi drop problem.

Lag is also a function of use. Depends on what you do with your device and how much clutter/crap you have on board.
My Note 5 had occasional lag. Gifted to my son and he really likes it.
My current 7+ has occasional lag. A clean out every few months (backup and full restore) takes care of it.

I consider it maintenance.

I wasn’t threatening you. I was just pointing out that bad arguments get eaten up around here. Why is it a bad argument? Because people go online to complain about things.

How was that a threat?

It's a threat because you will want to start an argument on this forum which I have seen you do in the past.

Maybe you don't know what lag is. Samsung is known for the worst of the Android phones with touchwiz and lag. Like I said, anyone who denies it, is either lying or doesn't have a clue.
[doublepost=1499104347][/doublepost]
That’s a lie.

I’ve ran into a few lagging display units.

Here we go.....Let's put it this way. 90% androids lag, 20% iphones lag.
[doublepost=1499104650][/doublepost]
No denial. It does lag out of the box. Brand new 512GB cellular.

That is not lag, that is locked up or touch digitizer is not working. There is a difference.

Exactly, I'm about to wipe my phone in a few weeks due to the lag it has, and I do the same for my note 5 after it starts "lagging"

Sounds like denial. It's not digitizer since functionality is restored after a reboot. Sometimes this lag is short then frees itself while other times the lag is more persistent.

Every Android phone I have owned has lagged, sometimes badly. You just have to get use to it. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying to make their phones look good.

I have never had my iPhones lag. They never lag going into the phone dialer, text messaging, etc. I have seen an issue where the APP may freeze, but that is the APP having an issue and not the phone. Android devices lag just going into the dialer. LOL

Here is what I have owned.

Note 3, 4, 5, 7
S3, 4, 5, 6, 7 edge
LG v10, v20
Multiple HTC high end models. HTC One (forget the model off hand)
iPhone 3GS, 4, 4S, 5, 5s, 6s plus, 7 plus

My condolences. Those are not the sort of Android phones I would buy. I agree fully that they hugely impair the Android experience due to the bloat.

Where you are incorrect is to assume that the experiences of those Android phones are indicative of all Android phones. They are not. Nexus, Pixel, OnePlus, Wileyfox etc. offer significantly nicer experiences due to being vanilla Android or close enough to it.

Android's greatest enemy isn't Apple; it's manufacturer modifications to Android. For many of the devices I've owned, the first thing I did was root them and install custom firmware. Fortunately the abovementioned Android options have been readily available the last few years.

Haha. Like I said, you don't know the difference between LAG and the device stops responding which is not lag. LAG resolves itself quickly after it starts. It still responds, but it lags and slows down drastically and jitters. A reboot fixes issues from the device stops responding like in that video which is NOT lag.

I'm assuming we all mean lag is the pause between hitting the screen and the reaction time between something actually happening? Or have I missed something?

So to repeat myself, my 2 yr old s6 edge has zero lag. I run it very clean, a few apps, and not many pics and it never let's me down. Wether anyone believes that is irrelevant to me...

Like what happens to me often, let me try to explain.

I go to make a phone call. I unlock the phone, tap the phone icon, and it doesn't respond, I tap it again, no response, and then it jumps into the dialer after maybe 2-3 seconds. I try to hit contacts and again no response till a few seconds later. That is lag.

It's not just the dialer, but it happens in any app. Like I mentioned above, there isn't an Android phone that doesn't lag. The users don't know difference to detect it.

Some ROMs do help it not be near as bad. But most OEM factory ones have issues especially Samsungs.

This is hilarious, so you are talking on behalf of every android device every made, talk about a God complex. Just becuase you have 3 seconds of lag on your devices, you may find this hard to comprehend but that doesn't mean every device has the same issue. I hit the screen on my device, it responds, it's got 4 gig of ram ffs, that's overkill of course, but if the end response is a smooth device, who cares. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another galaxy model next. This one has been flawless..

I've owed every Android imaginable and Samsung is the worst with LG not far behind. It is very annoying because I love everything else about Android. Believe it or not the Android phone that lagged the least was a $79 ZTE MAX PRO. I also rooted a LG Optimus once and that little phone was bad ass.
iPhone is much more consistent but will say my 5s with iOS 10 started lagging.
My theory with Android is the device needs to be restarted once a day. I'm always on the hunt for a app to automatically restart my phone every night while I'm sleeping but I don't think it will do that while locked My iPhones can go a year without restarting.

I wish rooting was a little more simple as I think folks would enjoy that experience.

Spot on correct

If you want the smoothest Android experience you get these phones on this order;

-Pixel XL
-OnePlus 5
-Nexus 6p

Then other phones not as smooth as above but very close;

-Current HTC flagship
-Current Motorola flagship

And lastly the laggy Droids;
-Current LG phone
-Current Samsung flagship

Now you can make an LG and Samsung phone super fast and fluid, but only if it's rooted and running a custom kernel + custom ROM.

I use to clean install Mac OS to get better performance. Even SSDs have overhead.

Some people swear by clearing system cache. Weekly reboots. Every system can get sluggish. Fragmented.

But really I have not seen that with Huawei Mate 9. NAND storage for one thing is faster, not sure why but it downloads and installs like greased lightning. Made setup fly and... no lag as it installed 50 apps or something.

I have to fault Instagram as the cause of trouble, of freezing, of requiring kill or force stop and clear its cache. Sometimes turning wifi off and let it use cellular (my ISP tends to have trouble on weekends or Sundays).

I have samsung S7 and Blackberry DTEK 60 and both use SD 820, and both going back to them now, run like molasses.

To echo what some of the other posters have said, my year (plus) old Nexus 6P runs brilliantly. Granted, it's had a factory reset at least once, seeing I bought it off of eBay used. But in the three(ish) months that I've had it so far, it's ran great. Haven't noticed any slowdowns. I'm also very selective of the apps that I put on the phone and the apps that I allow to run in the background, for what it's worth.

I'm very sad to see how much of a problem that lag/slowdown over time with other OEM's, judging by the posts in this thread. There's absolutely no excuse for it. If stock Android doesn't lag over time, but a different flavor of Android DOES (like TouchWiz), then the fault is entirely on the OEM.

And at least one poster said that iPhones don't lag -- that simply isn't true, especially if the iPhone in question is at least one generation old. Sometimes I feel that my Nexus 6P outperforms my family members' iPhones. YMMV, but you get the point.

Have really wanted to get my hands on a Galaxy S8 as the hardware is stunning and TouchWiz isn't as over-the-top as it once was, but I've been worried about performance over time. So this is really encouraging to see.

It takes 2-3s to open the dialer? Wow, just wow. I have a s8, it opens the dialer straight away. And it's not "out of the box". Explain that to me?

My S7 edge is lag free so I believe you.
Saying, "people who say thier device doesn't lag are either lying or don't know what they're talking about", is just a crappy way of re-enforcing ones argument, it's saying, " if you don't agree with me, you're an idiot".
There's no technical basis for such a claim, it's just arrogant and disingenuous.

Now, I do have an exynos, not a snapdragon, but I can't imagine that would make a difference.

I'm considering not upgrading this year, the Note 8 seems pricy, the S8 doesnt offer much more than what I have and everything else is either ugly or uses LED panels or doesn't offer anything worth upgrading for.
If the phone was laggy, it would have been replaced already.
But then again, what would I know? I'm either lying or I don't have a clue.
Then again, I could go and get all "confirmation bias" and find YouTube videos and forum entries to back up my findings......
