Hell, no. It reminds me of the old Bill Cosby (remember when he was funnny?) sketch about the kids getting a new ball. One of them had a line, “My mamma said, don’t kick it, don’t drop it, and don’t throw it.” I’ve no doubt my phone will last longer if I keep it in its box and don’t use it. But that’s not what my phone is for. Besides, if my phone doesn’t wear out, how can I possibly justify upgrading in two or three years?

My other half had iPhone 12P from new and she is one of those that leaves her phone on charge all night and sometimes forgets about it during the day (busy life when you have kids). I’ve just bough her a 15P and upon checking her 12P her battery health is still 93%.

So I don’t see how switching this 80% mode would make a huge difference to her or me. I tend to charge during the day and normally unplug my phone when it is around 87%. Never leave mine overnight as I don’t need a phone the next morning (perks of WFH).

I guess it’s one of those horses for courses scenario.

TL;DR - no.

I’m going to try it. So far I’m using roughly 50% of my battery a day and I charge over night. A 80% charge is perfect for my daily need as of right now.

Also, I tend to keep my phones for about 2 years and pass them down to my parents to use. Both times after 2 years my iPhone 11 and 12 had 83-84% battery health left. Which is right about replacement level. If the 80% charge feature improves the longevity of the battery on my 15 Pro then I’m all for it. My previous 12 Pro was really struggling to last a full day the last 6 months.

Just got the 15PM today. Set the charge limit to 80% when it was at 70% and put in on the charger. It is now at 95%. Has anyone confirmed that the limit works?

Why would you want to charge to 80% when already at 70%?

I put it on the charger since I just set it up and it is going to draw down while it loads from iCloud, etc. And since it is supposed to stop at 80% it shouldn't matter.

Why are you asking?

My Tesla? Yes, I charge to 80% because I want absolute longevity out of a car. For my phone which I'm going to replace in a year? I'm okay with mild battery degradation. Most years my battery health is >90% when I trade-in/sell.

Could not agree more...

If I could only afford a new phone every 4 years or more, caring about battery health MIGHT matter to me more than it does now(which is zero).

I fast charge the ever-loving bejesus out of my phones and either upgrade in a year and get rid of the phone, or if I keep the phone to give to my parents or other family member, then I get a new one via AppleCare before handing it down. I just don't get it when AppleCare will give you a new phone if your battery is trashed, I've done it twice before...

So, the 80% limit nonsense feels like just that... unless you can't afford AppleCare. Like literally just get AppleCare and charge the 💩 out of the phone and by year 2 you will qualify for a new phone. Then be careful if you still can't afford another phone for years.

QUIT WORRYING ABOUT IT!

If you can't afford $199 over 2 years but still want to spend $1000-$1700 for a "pro" phone that you don't use... then listen to Paris:

One thing I've noticed with my iPhones, it will drop to like 83-87% in a year and then take forever before it drops below 80% and is eligible for a battery replacement.

It’s not really a “can’t afford” thing it’s more of a “I’ve never once needed Apple Care” thing. In 15 years of owning Apple products and iPhones. I’ve never needed warranty coverage of any sorts outside the standard 1 year. It just seems like an unnecessary expense to me.

Mines pretty much plugged into the car for CarPlay all day and it stops charging at 80%, same at night while on the charging stand while using the standby function.

I’ll give it a try. rarely need 100% battery for a days use, and if that means a retain more capacity when I do need it , for longer. (I.e when I vacation / travel ) 3 -4 times a year , I can turn it off and still have that extra capacity. Vs charging to 100% every day and then 2 years down the line when I really need full capacity finding out I only have 90% total available.

Thanks! I'll try restarting since I haven't done that since it updated during setup.

I want to use this as an FYI:
So yes, I wouldn't have 100% when I took it off charge, but I would likely have 80% through most of the work day when I pick it of the charging stand.
The ‘magical’ 80% is somewhat logical but also somewhat arbitrary. Anyone truly obsessed with trying to maximize health longevity would aim for 50 to 60% charge level/state, especially if it were to remain nearly static for several hours or more. However, most users would be 😳/😡 if they disconnected their device after hours of “charging" and it only showed a 50% charge level. A good compromise would be 75% charge, halfway between the optimal (50%) and full (100%). But, thinking in a marketing manner, we can make that look better. Eighty-percent is an even number and closer to 100%. It’s like a price of $1,999.00, which is essentially $2,000 but the leading one, the value most focus on, seems noticeably better.

We are going to use the 80% as we usually keep phones a couple of years and then pass down to our kids to use for a couple more. Both my wife and I work from home and have our phones on charging stands at our desks most days.

I would love a way to schedule a change of the charging optimization automatically via shorcuts or such.
Would be great to put to 100% on the weekends and 80% on weekdays. Maybe a way to do that will come out in the future.

I’m using the small low voltage charger to 80%. Seems good enough for me for now though I always have a battery pack close by if I get to far from electricity

Hmmm after reading 7 pages of posts I still don't know, if this feature is useful or not, if it makes an impact on the battery life of my 15Pro or not...confusion 🤪
Basically, it’s beneficial in some scenarios/routines, when your iPhone is connected to a charger more than not.

This can be done now with a shortcut automation and $15 HomeKit-compatible smartplug.

I wonder if using standby mode during the night will have an affect on the battery longevity?

When passing my phones on to family, I always get a new phone right before the AppleCare expires. That way I use the phone however I want, fast charge as much as is useful, go caseless, no screen protector, whatever it may be... and they get a BRAND NEW phone even if it's 2 versions old.

Once I pass it on, it is up to them how they use it... (maybe if I had kids using phones I would be strict on them, but I doubt it...)

Yeah. Thought about it. I have a couple plugs laying around. Will have to see if they are HomeKit compatible. Was just hoping to keep it all internal to the phone though.
