My theory is they’ll just switch to 48MP for the telephoto lens to enable 6x optical zoom maintaining a 76 mm 3x sensor. They already did it with the main camera, enabling optical 2x zoom. I don’t see Apple removing the 3x camera for a 6x one. The 3x is optimal for portraits.
I usually stand pretty close to the items I want to take pictures of. That's usually all the stuff on Walmart's shelves so my wife can pick what thing she wants me to get her.

I wonder if all this stuff you mention means I can just stand on the other side of the aisle and take my pics now?

Probably not - after updating most stuff last year I’m expecting to upgrade off my 2019 MBP16 in the next 12-18 months, so I’ll be socking away cash for that. My 14Pro is still working just fine.

No. I have a 13 and won’t buy another iPhone with the flat sides. To my understanding the 15’s will keep the flat sides.

Will finally upgrade from my banged up, screen chipped and cracked 8-plus if it can last until the fall.

I shudder to think the cost in Canadian for a pro model.

Maybe, my 13PM is working great.
Main reason would be the periscope lens but I really want optical zoom, not digital.
USB-C will be good but I wouldn’t upgrade because if it.
Everything else I do not really care about but obviously would take as addl boni

I know it’s early to ask this question, but I am interested to see what everyone is planning on so far. Some people upgrade every year, some people might be holding on to a much older iPhone but are holding out to finally upgrade this generation, or maybe there’s a specific feature some people have been waiting on.

Rumored features (some may be Pro-only):
  • USB-C
  • Action button replacing mute switch
  • Periscope camera lens (5-6x zoom)
  • A17 - First 3nm Apple chip
  • 8GB RAM
  • WiFi 6E
  • Qualcomm X70
  • Titanium frame with more rounded edges
  • Slightly smaller body with same screen size
  • Smallest bezels of any phone
  • Red color
  • Higher price
On the other end, iPhone upgrades have never been so incremental, and it’s financially and environmentally smarter to hold on to your perfectly functioning iPhone now.

So, as of right now, are you planning on upgrading to the iPhone 15 series? Why or why not?
What are your plans?

No. Paying off my 14 pro max until September 2024. Even though I could pay it off earlier I really enjoy this phone and have no need for a new one already

We'll see what the 15 lineup has to offer. I feel every years it's not really a huge improvement over another model and I actually love my 14 pro max. I may skip the 15 and possibly the 16 and consider holding till the 17 comes out.

What are your plans?

I’m very undecided so far. I haven’t been the happiest with my iPhone 14 Pro Max. Battery life has been worse than what I had on my iPhone 13 Pro last year even though it had a smaller battery than my 14PM. The AOD and iOS itself has been buggy for me, but those are software issue not hardware issues. Although I understand why it had to happen, the new minimum focusing distance for the camera is annoying, and it feels like the camera setup just requires more work now between that and deciding when to use 48MP vs 12MP.

The most attractive features of the 15 Pro series for me are USB-C, titanium frame, rounded edges, and smaller bezels (and slightly smaller, lighter device as a result), and improved efficiency and connectivity. Between the 3nm A17, Qualcomm X70, and other rumored efficiency improvements (LiDAR scanner), I’m hoping that there’s a big battery life jump akin to iPhone XR, iPhone 11 series, and iPhone 13 series. I think that’s what would sell me on upgrading. Very unimportant, but I’d also like to switch iPhone colors. Deep Purple is darker than I’d like it to be, and I’d probably go for the gold Pro this year if they have it.

But those attractive features for me also come with a “but…” For example, USB-C would be great, but I mostly charge with a MagSafe dock anyways, and I would still need a lightning cable for my AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. Titanium frame and rounded edges are great, but I use a case a lot of the time which already rounds my edges and would stop me from touching the titanium anyways. Smaller bezels look great, but I likely wouldn’t even notice them or the slightly smaller body when actually using the phone, and they really don’t improve any functionality. Improved efficiency and connectivity are great, but who knows if I’ll even be able to notice the difference compared to my 14PM?

It also feels wasteful for me to be upgrading for minuscule differences and to have to buy new cases and screen protectors again, especially if there is a price increase. The iPhone 14 pre-ordering system and process of selling my 13 Pro was also chaotic and stressful for me last year to where I was wondering if it was even worth it to have the new device. But on the other hand, I’m pretty diligent and prudent with my money. I worked hard for years to be able to get to this point to be able to afford Apple device upgrades when I wanted to. This would be one of my few splurges of the year, and I am the type of person who would appreciate the incremental improvements.

So yeah, I have no idea. Thanks for asking.

I have a 14 Pro on the iPhone Upgrade Program. My friend has a 12 Pro Max and I quite like the bigger size so thinking about the 15 Pro Max

No - just upgraded from a 10XR to the 14 Pro. I usually keep phones 3 to 4 years. Only compelling reason for me might be USB-C so I have less charging cables. Next device upgrade will likely be iPad as it's 3 years old.

Currently have a 12 mini…
I don’t really want to get rid of the small form factor, but the battery life on this phone is absolutely atrocious.
I’ve already had it replaced once, it was better for about four months, but now it’s atrocious again.
Also, I got this phone and AppleCare through a carrier, and then I left that carrier, so I no longer have any form of AppleCare.
I would just opt for the 13 mini, but from what I can gather the battery improvements are nothing to write home about, and after a year of usage it will go back down to being just as awful as my current 12 mini.
Also i’m hoping to keep this phone for at least three years, hopefully more, and the 13 Mini will be two years old on a barely better CPU than my current phone.
So yes, I eventually plan to get one of the 15’s.
Which one I’ll get is the real question.
I don’t really care about cameras or 120 Hz, but the A16 was barely an efficiency improvement over the A15, and same goes for that compared to the A14.
But the A17 looks like it’s going to be a massive performance and efficiency improvement, which hopefully translates into much longer battery life.
And while these aren’t factors that are going to go into my decision, the more comfortable curved edges, the faster USB-C port, the action button, and the stronger build are certainly going to be nice things to have.
So… then it’s just a decision of which I’d prefer, the Pro or Pro Max.
I don’t care about the camera, so it’s literally just going to come down to exactly how much better the bigger battery of the Pro Max is compared to the pro.
Also… the price.
