I have been fully on the iPhone 15 Pro Max hype train the last couple months, but I'm pretty disappointed after seeing the keynote. I'm also not usually the person who lets myself get disappointed after Apple keynotes.
Comparing the 15PM and 14PM specs on the Apple website is kind of mind-blowing to me at how few differences there are. I think I'm most disappointed by battery life and the 3nm chip. I wasn't expecting the huge battery increases that some were, but I was expecting at least an hour longer. I don't understand how 3nm is supposed to be this revolutionary change and even got delayed from debuting in the Pro iPhones last year, yet there's only a 10% increase in performance and no battery life gains??? The only thing that makes sense to me is that Apple reduced the physical battery sizes. But even then, I don't understand how they tested the exact same battery life two years in a row. You'd think there would be some variance in battery testing.
I'm disappointed by the colors. I wanted gold. Gray looks too warm to be a futuristic gray that I wanted. Blue looks nicer than expected but I'm afraid it would just look like Pacific Blue in person. As always, you can't really tell how dark the Black is just from Apple's marketing photos.
Also, there were basically no surprises that the leaks didn't reveal which feels pretty unusual. Even for the 11 Pro - 14 Pro years, Apple has always created some sort of secret camera feature (ProRes video, Deep Fusion, ProRAW, Photonic Engine, Cinematic Mode, Action Mode, Photographic Styles, etc.), but there was nothing here that wasn't leaked before.
Then, on top of all this, Apple only offers $650 trade-in on the 14PM. Apple offered $720 for the 13PM at the 14 launch, and $790 for the 12PM at the 13 launch - a $140 difference! I sold my phone last year, but was considering doing trade-in this year for the convenience, but now I really can't justify it.
Idk, I'm just really disappointed. I'm considering just keeping my 14PM which pains me to say because I really haven't liked this phone much. It's been a bad upgrade year for me. I know some people have had great experiences with their 14PM, but I had a bad pre-order experience, a bad eSIM experience, lots of bugs, and poor battery life from the start, so I was hoping the 15 Pro would be a big improvement and fresh start for me.
I'm thinking about just pre-ordering the 15PM and trying it for 2 weeks to see how I actually like it and if it's any better for me in real life because maybe I just got a defective 14PM, but idk. I did a cost analysis to see how much it cost me to upgrade year-over-year last year, and it was around $500. Idk if I can justify a $500 upgrade for no battery life improvements, only 10% performance improvements, and boring colors.
I feel the same way.
I am in the upgrade program and doing an upgrade would cost me nothing. However, I think the iPhone 16 is going to be the more revolutionary upgrade and if I wait another year and pay off the iPhone 14 I own, I can sell it and use that money toward the 16.
BTW, you can get much more money for your old iPhone by selling it online with sites like "itsworthmore.com" or "sellyourmac.com". At least, you should. Now that the phone is announced sell values are probably down.
