Well I’m on the Apple upgrade program and don’t want to loose the priority it gives me in 2020. So unless the cost goes up this year I’ll go ahead and upgrade.

I’m on the iPhone Upgrade Program as well.

Honestly I’ve gotten a new iPhone every year since 2007 and will pretty much always continue to do so.

It’s the product I use more than anything else and I always sell the old phone to make up the cost of the new 1.

It’s worked for 10+ years.

It’s worked for 10+ years.

That's all that matters.

I share a different opinion... and that is that phone tech has caught up and every year upgrades don't make much sense to me anymore. I'm someone that upgraded every year until the 7 came out which was the first generation I skipped... and now I'm headed into year 3 with the 8 Plus.

I mean, if I actually cared about a slight bump in camera quality I might upgrade every year but the 8 Plus still takes amazing FB photos and will continue to do so. If I need better photos and videos I have a dedicated camera.

The internal 8 Plus hardware is still more than sufficient to run any apps out there as well.

To each their own. :)

I hear you. The 8 Plus is a great phone.

I just feel like I have to be up to date with the iPhone even if the new features aren’t major. It gets better every year IMO.

Still a tech I could care less about on my phone... and I'm as big a home theater nut as anyone with a 65" OLED in my theater room.

OLED and the deep blacks are best viewed in a dark environment. I watch my 4K UHD movies in the dark and the picture quality is stunning.

I'm sure the phones are great with it... but how many of us are looking at our phones in the dark consistently? That's one of the reasons I have no problems with keeping my 8 Plus and LCD screen for another year.

OLED is the absolute best for home theater... for phones? Not a deal maker for me. I'll eventually get it... maybe 2020 after 3 years with the 8 Plus.

I find looking at blacks on an OLED in direct sun is a less than optimal experience. It's like you're inspecting for dust under the glass or something since you're literally staring at a turned off display. Strange.

Yeah I’m sure I will probably be skipping this year, these phones are expensive and I hate shelling out the cash year after year. My XS max is still good.

I'm skipping 2019. I just bought a mint condition 8 Plus off Swappa for $600. I prefer the home button over the others (been using an Xr). Hope to use the 8 Plus for at least a couple years.

Same boat. It's fun for me to upgrade every year. There's no way I could go back to a Touch ID device after using Face ID. That being said the X to XS upgrade was pretty underwhelming but I appreciate the upgraded camera.

I could see myself going back to Touch ID (if it’s embedded in the screen). Sometimes I don’t want to lift my phone up or move my head to be in view of the True Depth system.

I do love Face ID though. I also really missed the “Plus” size so going from X to XS Max was a no-brainer.

Still loving my 8+ too, although I’m heading into year 2 as I bought it delayed for a better deal. Easily the best iPhone I’ve owned to date and still performing above what I need.

We will be upgrading our 2 XS maxes for the new XR coming later this year. Right now we are paying $82 dollars per month on top of our regular bill and my parents 6s pluses is reaching the end of its lifespan. We are also upgrading them to the new XR.

As much as I love my XS Max, we just don’t want to pay that much since were adding two XRs to the monthly plan.

I can get 4 XRs for less than the price of two XS maxes per month.

However, my husband wants the 5G and the USB-C. So we will be upgrading next year as well soon after my parents pay off their phones.

I agree 100%, I have a 55" LG OLED which I adore but I couldn't care less if my phone has OLED or LCD.

Two things.

First off, can you share your math how four $750(ish) phones are cheaper monthly than two $1099(ish) phones? Genuine curiosity here.

Second, that font color is a shock to read. Just as an fyi:

Sorry about that. My love of pink and purple can be overwhelming. lol
But to answer your question. My husband’s job is offering a discount for the XR if you order though them. The 128 GB model is only $325 plus tax.
It would be only be about $15 dollars per month for each XR. Which be around the $60 per month versus the $82 we are paying currently.

But a BUTTON in 2019?!

Ummmmm yeah? ZOMG a button! Let me run out and drop $1000+ on a new phone just to get rid of the button so I can sleep at night!

Exactly what Apple wants me to do... but isn't necessary. I don't need Face ID to enhance my phone security. Touch ID worked... and still does.

I do like how they pitched "Touch ID has a 1 in 50,000 chance of getting broken into while Face ID is 1 in 1,000,000." Yeah right... random numbers pulled out of executive collective arses to increase sales. Nothing more.

Genuinely curious, did you actually work on the iPhone development R&D team involved in the engineering to make this statement? I mean, you’re entitled to your opinion, but it doesn’t hold any validation that it isn’t true what Apple said either. Pretty sure they wouldn’t lie about something like that on a stage in front one of the largest tech stages in the word, even though that you’re indicating they ‘made it up’. Sure, does Apple want to increase sales? Absolutely. Great that you support touch ID, but no need to exaggerate without having validation what you’re saying isn’t true.

No.. I don't but I definitely remember your name. You're one of the big fans and that's cool. Doesn't change my opinion any. Where does Apple get this number from?

1 in 50k chance my Touch ID gets hacked? 1 in 1M for the Face ID? Legit? From where? Or just part of the sales pitch? The latter is most probable. I still remember laughing at that during the keynote.

Oh.. my phone hasn't been broken in to and as I said upthread I'd wager my life that 50k random people could attempt to break in with their fingerprints and none would be successful. Touch ID is just as credible now as it was then. Oh difference is now there's Face ID but it doesn't diminish the value of Touch ID any.

No I won't pay $1000 for Face ID. Isn't worth it when Touch ID still does the job and does it well.

Cheers.

Actually, I’m fairly Objective to all technology alike, not just Apple. But I questioned your post, because you’re making a claim that they’re ‘pulling their number out of their arse’, yet you didn’t back up with any source. So I asked you genuinely, how do you know that.

Where does Apple get this number from?.

I don’t know, but likely it’s through testing through extensive research and development, which I think it’s given that Apple put a lot of time in face ID. As indicated, they just wouldn’t lie about something like that, and theoretically, they can’t lie about something like this without ramifications. But if you’re so curious where they got the number from, why don’t you contact Apple directly versus saying they are lying, which you don’t have proof of yourself.

And I like touch ID as well, and I think Face ID has its advantages, just like touch ID does. But I’m not about to claim Apple is lying about anything without actually be able to prove that.

Nothing wrong with that.

I basically don't buy that a face scanner is 20x more secure than a fingerprint scanner. Even identical twins don't have the same fingerprint. Just not a statistic I can agree with.

As for not upgrading in 2019 it doesn't really have anything to do with Touch/Face ID. It has to do with the 8 Plus still being an amazing phone that does everything well and I will keep it a 3rd year over upgrading to the newest phone for Face ID and a camera bump... neither of which I care about at the present time.

:)

Yeah, I'm on the 7 and I think I'm overdue for an upgrade. I know everyone is talking about how the 2020 iPhone model is supposed to be "the big one" but I don't think I can hold off anymore.

If 2020 is that big, I might have to do a one time yearly upgrade (I typically wait every 2 to 3 years) for that one, but I don't think 5G will be that widespread until 2021 anyhow.

I paid $300 for my iPhone 6 64GB on launch day. It's been in a case since day one and the only support I've needed was replacing the battery last year for $30. The phone is pristine but iOS13 will not support it. I have a hard time justifying $1000 for the new generation iPhoneX and will wait and see what the new phones offers. The latest "thing" seems to be 5G support and I'm curious if the '19 lineup will be considered obsolete upon release.
